Good afternoon: I am trying to find the location of birth of my gggrandparents: LUKAS, Michael b. 1827 and MIEDEL, Magdalena b. 1837 in Rheinland, Bavaria? Michael LUKAS and his wife and five adult children immigrated about 1888 with five of their adult children. One child for sure, remained in Germany. Michael was 61 years old when they immigrated. For some of their children, census records say they were born in Niederberg, Bavaria. One child's marriage records says, Varsaw. Another says Hömannsberg. My father always told me his grandparents were from Koblenz, as he heard as a child. What a three-ring circus. I have checked LDS church films for Niederberg (Sankt Goar) and Koblenz (St. Kastor and Liebfrauen Church) with no luck. I also checked civil records. Are there other smaller area Catholic churches I should be checking? The years would be 1827 or earlier to 1888. The LUKAS' were very devout catholic's, so I would imagine there are vital records somewhere. Any help or ideas as to what I should do next would be greatly appreciated! Nancy
An ancestor's occupation between 1771 and 1815 is listed as a farmer but after this occupation is the word, Ortspedell. The two are written as follows: "Ackersmann/Ortspedell." Orts means place and pedell means servant. What would have been expected of this person in the late 1770s? During the same time period, another man connected to my ancestry has Schuhmacher/Pedell after his name which would translate as shoemaker/ servant. What is the difference between an Ortspedell and just Pedell in terms of responsibility? Thank you for any assistance. EM Lutz

I have found a census of a relative and the citizenship says PA. Is this the state of Pennsyvania? Should I look in PA for his papers and maybe the ship list? Thanks, Missy Hetterick
Jacob Peter Haberer was born in Freisbach, Germany on February 11, 1839. Is it probable that he is the person by the same name christened on February 17, 1839 at Gommersheim? ~Lori

I am searching for information on the following persons in the Kröppen, Rheinland-Pfalz area: 1. Michael KELLER, born about 1731, married Marguerite BITTEL before 1762. 2. Michael KELLER, son of Michael & Marguerite, born about 1762, married Jeannette ANDRES. 3. Michael ANDRES, born before 1739, married Jeannette MERTIEL before 1756. 4. Jeannette ANDRES, daughter of Michael & Jeannette, born about 1756. The names Marguerite and Jeannette are taken from French records so their names in the Pfalz may have been Margaret and Johanna. Michael KELLER and his wife Jeannette ANDRES resided in Haspelschiedt, Lorraine from about 1795 onward. I am interested in learning birth, marriage and death dates, as well as names of parents siblings, etc. Thanks for any help. Lowell Kuntz

I am coming back to may first reply to the Rüdesheim request of Roger. There are actually two Rüdesheim: a town Rüdesheim am Rhein (bordering the Rhine river) around 20 km West of Wiesbaden and another village Rüdesheim around 2 km West of Bad Kreuznach. Rüdesheim am Rhein is the location I mentionned in my first mail. It belonged to Nassau and later to Hessen-Nassau and now-a-days to Hessen, whereas Rüdesheim near Bad Kreuznach belonged to the Prussian Rheinland, county of Koblenz, and later on to Rheinland-Pfalz. All the talk of Zweibrucken and Kaiserlautern prompts me to enter some of the surnames in my BECKER family tree. My BECKER family had a farm, Klosterbergerhof, in Winterbach, near Zweibrucken. Some of the names associated with my Beckers include BLINN (from Kashofen), RUNG (from Thalfroschen), DANNER and LANG (Winterbach) and SCHAFER (of Beidershausen). I would enjoy hearing from anyone who might have a connection to my BECKER family. Graechen Becker Stewart

The Paraguay left London, England 29 August 1869. As far as I can tell it made no stops before docking in New York City about 3 weeks later. The ships list can be obtained from LDS. My g-g-grandfather was a passenger from London on the ship. Good hunting, Kay -- Genealogy without documentation is mythology!

I assume by the letter that looks like a "b" you mean the "ß" ( called esset or double "s"). It is commonly replaced by "ss". This would make the name you are looking for Hauß, Hauss, or even Haus (meaning house). >2. My father always said that his father, (Leonard) was from Bavaria and >the Black Forest and came with his parents on the SS Paraguay in 1869. I Bavaria proper and the Black Forest are separated by another region called Württemberg. The Black Forest is essentially within the the old Duchy of Baden, now combined with the old Kingdom of Württemberg. The Rheinland-Pfalz (or Palatines) was also under the rule of Bavaria, even though is was not connected, and it is resonably close to the NW corner of the Black Forest. There is a list somewhere in the web that shows the ships, dates, and ports. I seemed to have lost the URL. Perhaps someone can send it. The specific one I'm refering to only lists the ships, not the passenger lists. From the date you can rent a microfilm at your local LDS Family History Center that contains all of the ships arriving in a particular port in that time frame. >don't know port of departure or landing. The best way to research is near home. The LDS Family History Library online card catalog shows there are 8 microfilms of the Catholic church books in the Geinsheim area, with records from 1655 to 1960. Rent the microfilms at your local FHC. FYI: you usually do not need to know German to get the information you want from these data. You are primarily looking for names, dates, and places. You will need to learn the old German script. A good sourcebook is one written by the late Edna Bentz. Hi Everyone: Could someone lookup the surnames Stöhr and Gombert in the Niederschlettenbach Catholc Registry for me please. Thank you, Cindy God always answers prayers. Sometimes the answer is "No." (i.e., He has a better plan, trust Him)
Dear Pfalz List, I leave for Germany next month. During the first part of my trip in Rheinland-Pfalz I plan to visit the "Verbandsgemeinde Gau-Algesheim," in Gau-Algesheim and "Evabgekuscges Pfarramt Appenheim" in Appenheim to research my Klippel line. I also plan to make a trip to Darmstadt to visit the "Hessische Staatsarchiv Darmstadt." I will spend time in Ober Hilbersheim and Bubenheim where my Klippels came from and try to contact the two Klippel families in Ober Hilbersheim while there. I have sent several letters to them in the past but never have received a reply. Has anyone had experience with any of these places, and if so, can you give me some advice. Since this is my first trip to mainland Europe I could also use some traveling tips and advice. Thanks for anything you would care to share. Denzil Klippel
