    3. Betty and Diana, This is the first time have seen the name VIEHL in any of my newsgroups. I have an Albert VIEHL from the Newport area of Rhode Island, b. circa 1896. He married Margaret RITTER of Elizabeth New Jersey. They had three children, Margaret, Helen, and Albert. After divorcing in the early 20's, Margaret and the children stayed in Elizabeth. I believe Albert, Sr., remarried in Newport, where he died. 1. [PFALZ] Family from Weingarten and Kleinfischlingen
    2. Gerry Meier
    3. Looking for information or connections to these people: Joseph KESLER of Kleinfischlingen and Eva Catharina JAECK (JACK) of Essingen. Their oldest child was Anna Maria, born 1802. The rest of the children were born over the next twenty one years, making the first and last ones twenty-two years apart! They are Maria Katharine, Joseph, Maria Appollonia, John Michael, who died at age three months, and Catharine, in addition to three brothers who came to Missouri, Jacob, Michael, and John Adam. The maternal grandparents of the family were Nicolaus JACK and Anna Marie MAJOR, and on the father's side, the grandparents were Andreas Franz KESLER originally from Weingarten near the Rhine in a wine region, and Appolonia BUECHLER (BIEGLER). The BUECHLER family has a history of migration from Switzerland, where they lived in the Simmenthal area near Bern, working as shepherds and cow herders.

    3. Christine, In response to your query, I am researching the surname Schmidt. Unfortunately , this is so common it is a difficult task! I have: Elizabeth Schmidt, born 1813 in Kandel, Germesheim (obit says in Preussen). Cannot find info on parents. The obit is from a church book and the minister's handwriting is quite scribbly. She came to the U.S. in 1835 with Johann Dieter Kolb (also of Kandel), landed in New Orleans and were married there, moved to Cincinnati, then to Indiana. She died in 1888 in Dearborn County Indiana. 1. [PFALZ] Joes Petri CANI
    2. Is anyone familiar with or have knowledge of Joes (Johann) Petri CANI and his wife Margaretha Catharina who were starting their family in KRIEGSHEIM (Griesheim, Griegsheim), Pfalz, Germany in 1737? KRIEGSHEIM is adjacent to MONSHEIM. LDS microfilm #957807 shows the birth record of apparently their first child, Maria Catharina, 18 September 1737. Joes Petri was my 5-great grandfather, and it is the first record I can find of this family. Problem: Where did Joes Petri CANI live before KRIEGSHEIM? Who were his parents? This is my "stone wall", and I can't seem to get past it! Any help would be greatly appreciated. E. Edward Kani eedkani707@cs.com

They are local to where you are interested and while they are researching largely Roman Catholic church books, they have wealth of knowledge about what is available in the local area. 1. [PFALZ] Zweibruchen & Althornbach Records
    2. Karen Deeds-Jarvie
    3. If anyone else on the list researching specifically in Zweibruchen and Althornbach? Over the years, I've been able to extract some information at LDS on these two areas. But I understand that many records were destroyed during the wars that historically occurred. What has been your experience trying to find data? I would be most interested in the exchange of ideas. The search has been very frustrating. For example, the founding relative in my Dietz family is Conrad Dietz. His obituary stated that he was born in Althornbach in July of 1711. What little I have been able to find at LDS does not confirm this. I do have a record of his confirmation in Zweibruchen. Unfortunately, there are several parental pairings that could belong to him. I need the baptism to ascertain his mother's name. This would be most helpful. Any ideas? I believe I've scoured every Zweibruchen record available through LDS. Many thanks in advance! 2. Ruth A. Lucchesi
    3. Hi: Those of you with ancestors from the Kaiserslautern-Enkenbach-Hochspeyer area of the Pfalz may be interested in a book that I have just published. It is a genealogy of the Wellstein Family beginning with Antonious Wellstein (b ~ 1650) and his wife Anna Rosina ? in the Wetzlar area of Germany (Arborn). They had three children, two of which are documented, and the book includes descendants of these two (Bernhard and Melchior). Some people immigrated to the US, others went to Canada and Switzerland and many others stayed in Germany. The hard cover 400-page book has a complete index of names for each of the 908 individuals listed (women are indexed by both their married and born names) as well as 213 pictures of family members. Other major family names in the book include, Sprengart, and Kronenberger as these families intermarried consistently through the years. There are of course other family names as well, but I don't want to bore everyone with a complete listing. If you are interested, please e-mail me personally. Ruth

    3. I have copies of birth, marriage, and death certificates that my great uncle got 40 years ago from Germany. I want to write to these same places and need some help. On two of the certificates is a stamp mark with the words "Freistaat Bayern Gemeinde Schmitshausen". On two others is written these locations: Wallhalben-Oberhausen and Schallodenbach-Pfalz (Catholic rectory is mentioned also). Does anyone know the meaning of and/or how I could write to these places? Also does anyone know how I can get vital statistic information from Zweibruchen concerning births, baptisms (Catholic), and marriages? On two of these documents there is a farm mentioned called Wickelhof (near Schallodenbach), and a "Cross Chapel". Are either of these familiar to anyone? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. 1. [PFALZ] Gimbsheim Germany Trip - by Helen Kimmel Orndorff
    2. Alfred J. Spiry , Sr
    3. Just saw the subject posting and reply of your trip to subject town. That is a very small town, and has no historian. It does have a church shown on the Atlas. The suggestions you got are good, except we take exception to your being advised to use Frankfurtas an operating base. The reason is that Gimbsheim is due south of the large city of Mainz (that city is quite a piece west of Frankfurt). Since you will be driving from Frankfurt, go west to Mainz, and make that your operation center. Then take Highway 9 south going through towns of Oppenheim, and to Guntersblum, there a road goes off to the southeast (left) about3 km you are in Gimbsheim. The atlas shows a Church, and possibly the priest or minister will let you look at the church records. The town is too small to have a historian. Bob is correct in suggesting that you avail yourself of the network of the Deutsche Bundesbahn. It is cheaper, and easier than trying to find your way around driving any distance. Have a good trip. Al and Margaret.
