    1. [PFALZ] Why Ohio?
    2. Joe Metz
    3. I'm not an historian, but as a resident of Ohio, particularly Cincinnati, I do know that with my city, we were one of the largest cities west of the Alleghanies until after the Civil War when cities such as Chicago and St. Louis began to eclipse us in size. I think Ohio was partly a major stopping point in the 1800's because it was one of the first areas settled after the Revolutionary War, it's easy access by water by both Lake Erie and the Ohio River. After visiting Germany myself, I came to realize too that many Germans settled in this area because it reminded them of home. I ate dinner once at a home on a high hill across from Heidelberg and looking back over to the city itself, I knew that my ancestors saw in our hills both on the banks of the river both in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana would easily have reminded them of home. Of course in Cincinnati, the area north of the Miami Canal is still called "Over the Rhine" Just my educated guesses. joe ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elsa Kahler" <ekahler@sympatico.ca> To: <PFALZ-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 07, 2000 6:20 AM Subject: [PFALZ] Why Ohio > I too have ancestors that settled in Ohio. 2. Lucy: My Lutzes seemed to remain in NYC until Peter LUTZ's second wife died in 1920. Her name was Marie MULLER from Alsace. Then they sold a tenament they owned in Yorkville,the German area in Manhattan, NYC, and scattered. At that time Marie Lutz had 4 grown sons, way over marriage age still living with her as well as a daughter Helen HOFMAN. I believe Marie Muller was a cousin of Elizabeth BOSCH Do you see any likelyhood of a connection? Marie's sons names were Peter Frank John Vincent, Nicholas. Florence

    3. My Pfalz ancestor, Frederick Ertel, b. Kandel in 1816, settled in Indiana. Why? Perhaps they were following the old adage, "Go West, young man!" America had achieved a vast reputation as the land of opportunity as long as one was willing to work. These new immigrants wrote home urging their friends and relatives to join them. Perhaps, you'll find through further research, the connections you seek to Ohio. My Frederick left the SE corner of Indiana in 1860 and moved to Adams County, IL. Again, we wondered why did he move? Only a few years ago after internet contact with other researchers, did I find that many people from his father's hometown of Neuburg am Rheine settled in Adams County. There must have been communication between the immigrants which caused them to want to settle in the same areas. I have not seen them, (couldn't read if I did) but towns with considerable German settlers had newspapers published in German. There was more of a network than we realize. 2. I am attempting to find the birth date and death date for Carolus "Karl" Bengel. I have found that he was christened at Roemisch-Katholische in Bad Duerkheim Pfalz, Bayern on July 19, 1815. Hence, he was likely born within the week prior, but I would like to have the exact date. I would also like to know where and on what date he died. Carolus was married to Sara Lauer who was born November 6, 1815. Thanks for any information you can provide. Regards, Robert McFarland rbmlionsb@aol.com

Baden is not within 30 miles per Shtetlseeker. Arzheim is about 1 1/2 hour ride by horse and buggy from Edenkoben. The way your question is phrased reminds me of my search. The 1870 US census said my ancestor was from Baden and I found him in Pfalz. The Pfalz being part of Bayern at the time and the census taker not knowing Bayern was German for Barvaria probably assumed he meant Baden. Bob

    2. Manfred Haertel
    3. I'm looking for the marriage of David Bixel (or Büchsel or Bichsel) and Elisabeth Freyburger (or Friburger) before 1772 (possibly in the late 1760s). They appeared (already married) in Dannemarie, Alsace, France in the early 1770s where they had several children. It seems that informations about the origin of this couple can not be found in the Alsace. According to the current state of my research, David seems to be born in 1732 or 1733, Elisabeth between 1736 and 1740, but most probably around 1740. I have informations that both surnames Bixel and Freyburger appeared in the Pfalz. At least Bixel seems to be known in the Hassloch area in the appropriate time frame. If anybody knows the marriage or the births of my ancestors or has other informations for me about this surnames, I would be very happy. Best regards Manfred Härtel

    1. [PFALZ] DIETZ, Rhineland-Pfalz->Westfalen, 1600's
    2. Dereck Dietz
    3. The following information is, admittedly sketchy, and I am on a fishing expedition so I apologize for the lack of specific information. I also apologize for my lack of proper knowledge of German geography. I'm looking for information on the line of a Johann Steffen DIETZ. I don't know when he was born but I'm estimating that it was in the mid 1600's. I do know that he was born in Raubach, Rhineland-Pfalz in the current German state of Neuwied. He had one son that I know of, Wilhelm also born in Raubach but who was in the area of Niederschelden, Westfalen in the current German state of Siegen. The next generation of this line, that I know of, were a Johann Adam DIETZ (1699-1760) and Hermannus DIETZ (1701-?). Both were born in Siegen. I have a total of 8 children listed for Johann Adam DIETZ but only one, Johann Jost DIETZ, that I can track from Germany to America. If this surname and timeframe matches anybody elses I would be extremely interested in hearing from you. Thank you very much. Dereck L. Dietz dietzdl@ameritech.net
