I would like some help in translating some abreviations that are from a book on my family's genealogy. The abreviations are in text giving names, births, deaths, etc. If someone knows where there is a list of these abreviations used in German records, I would appreciate the information. The words are: Herm. KL. beide 16.03.1792 Rod. led. Herm led. Wagner +20.07.1851 Stein. Schäfer, Wfb. Zimmerm. Bu. Holzmacher, Bu vorehel. Soldat b. Napoleon Wo? * 11.06.1781 Bann. Zimmerm. Acker.Wfb. Thank you for any help you can give me. Kathy bigelow@teleport.com
I know this might be a FAQ, but I'm going to Germany in a few weeks and was wondering a few things: 1. Is Speyer where the records for the Pfalz (Like Leimersheim and Hordt to be exact)? 2. Is it too late for me to call them and make an appointment to see records? 3. How do I find out what records they have? I imagine they wouldn't want me wandering aimlessly - slack-jawed and drooling over the variety of records, without a very specific agenda ;) Thank you for any suggestions! I am looking for info on the area that was known as Zweibrucke, Pfalz circa 1712. My family Johannes Nicholas KEMMERER is said to have been born there, he later came to Easton, Northhampton, PA. I have done searches on the 'net and have not hit Zweibrucke ! Can anyone on the list tell me what present town/city it is near??? I have been watching this list for a long time waiting for some reference to this place or family. Thank you ... Judy
Dave, I understand completely. Just wanted to know you were OK. Kaye
Michael, I received some maps of areas of the Pfalz from relatives in Germany a few years back. I scanned them and thought I would put them on the Internet for all to use. They been folded and written on a little so they might be hard to read. Herxheim is definitely listed on most of them though. Hope they help. Good luck. Hello: I'm not sure I understand your references in items 2 and 3. Do you know what HBR stands for? If it's Heimatbuch der Deutschen Aus Russland, those journals should eventually be available through interlibrary loan from the North Dakota State University Germaans from Russia Heritage Collection. (http://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/gerrus/ )Actually, that goes for just about any German/Russian journal or reference, so even if HBR stands for something else, you should still check it out. I say eventually because the NDSU library is still recovering from a flood and I'm not sure what kind of requests they are honoring right now. The Heimatbuch is also in the collection of the Germans from Russia Heritage Society (GRHS) ( http://www.grhs.com/ ) but if I recall correctly they don't do interlibrary loans, though they can arrange for someone to do research in their collection for a fee. Since I surmise you are located in Germany, interlibrary loan from the US may be difficult to arrange, so perhaps having someone in the GRHS do the research for you would be the way to go. However, one would think the journals would also be available at numerous libraries in Germany as well. To answer question number 1, you may want to post your query on the Germans from Russia Genealogy Discussion Group, which can be joined from this link: http://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/gerrus/listgerrus2.html The people who post there are the real experts on anything dealing with Germans from Russia. Some of them are located in Germany, and they would probably know if there are copies of the references you need available over there. I read the list regularly, and in fact, if you want, I would be happy to repost your query to the list if you don't want to join. (But joining is easy.) You may want to check out some of the other links at this site, which belongs to yet another German/Russian organization, the AHSGR: http://www.ahsgr.org/ahsgrwww.html In particular, notice the link to Odessa: A German-Russian Genealogical Library, which is a full-text searchable online archive of documents concerning Germans from Russia. http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/odessa.html -----Original Message----- From: Frank Hummel [mailto:eningen.germany@juno.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 09, 2000 9:13 PM To: PFALZ-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PFALZ] Hummels to Russia from Germany Hi: Hummels to Russia While reading From Catherine to Khrushchev I came across the following items that I wish to pursue. If there anyone else on this list researching in the towns of KAIFENHEIM or LUTZERATH, both located near Cochem? I would like to ask a couple of questions. Thanks, JoAnn in Tucson, AZ
To add to the many varied ways our subscribers have described Their ancestors arrived in the USA... our interloper Swiss Fullweilers settled in Gimmeldigen in 1717 ( just north of Speyer), from there they moved south into Frankweiler and Spirkelbach.... As the story goes our Family was tired of the many wars and the impreesion of men into the armies..... Sooo in the middle of the night they left Spirkelbach dressed as women and headed to Amsterdam... I always wondered why men would dress as women and the travel with women and children. I felt they would stick out like sore thumbs.... In 'Germans to America' I found Anna Maria (Jüng) Fulweiler 1846 traveling with Jacob (my GGfather) and his brother Micheal and Elisabeth thier younger sister. No men ! At this moment I realized that the men came over first and sent for the rest of their Families later, after getting established..(in Cincinnati) As of yet I have not found where the men came in at and what year, tho the family story states NY or Boston about 1842... My thoughts are what did the women have to do to leave Germany LEGALLY since the men slipped out avoiding notification.... To see the Pfalz today, its an Emerald Green Picture Book Region and its hard to picture it any other way.... Ann (Fulweiler = Jüng = Weissenberger = Mühlhaüsen = Kost = Pfaffman) Frankweiler = Spirkelbach = Gimmeldigen

Al & Margaret and Michael- You are all quite correct about Germany history and that of the PFALZ is particularly complex as it never quite recovered from the 30 Years War. Most maps deal with post 1871 Germany such as the 1883 Atlas des Deutschen Reichs map available at the University of Wisconsin web site, or the modern as Map Quest. As Al & Margaret pointed out, for this Herxheim it matters little as it is still there, tiny as it may be. I have great belief in maps and keep hard copy of the section of the PFALZ from the 1871 map which is of interest to me and front of me. While most road maps will not give coordinates, topographical maps will do so. However, in this case, I cheated. I simply went into www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.html and got both the coordinates and the link to Map Quest. Annweiler is a beautiful town in the Pfalz region of Bavaria west of the Rhine and less than 10 miles north of the French border. The LDS family History Library has microfilms of the Catholic records from 1761-1924. These ,of course, are in German, but once you find your surnames you should be able to decipher the info. I have all the protestant records for this town. Pinky Palladino
