    1. RE: [PFALZ] Coat of arms
    2. Mark Lesmeister
    3. Hello. No, one couldn't say that everyone knew what their "coat of arms" was in the 1700's/1800's because few people had them. Grants of arms were given to individuals, but these were often not heritable, and if they were they were usually passed on to a specific heir, e.g. eldest sons. Generally, if a person inherited a true grant of arms, the person knows it, if for no other reason than because people are constantly addressing that person as "My Lord" or "My Lady. (g) What many people mistake for "their" coat of arms, or "family crest", is usually a rendering of a grant of arms that was given to some person who shared the same surname long ago. Many mail-order and now Internet companies will provide these renderings for a fee, but they can easily be looked up in many geneological libraries for free. For the Pfalz area (or any German speaking area) the Siebmacher series of volumes is considered to be fairly complete. These surname crests are interesting in their own right and generally harmless, unless one imbues them with a genealogical meaning they usually don't have. Thus, for example, while I am curious whether the 15th century Lesmeister that was granted arms is related to me, even if I can prove he was I don't plan on claiming a "family crest". Of course, cities, principalities, organizations, etc. were often granted arms as well. Perhaps this is what your grandson's teacher was referring to. I see someone has been kind enough to provide a link to the Pfalz crest already. You can probably also find one for the town or city your ancestors came from as well. Hope this helps. -----Original Message----- From: smada@webtv.net [mailto:smada@webtv.net] Sent: Wednesday, September 06, 2000 10:16 PM To: PFALZ-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PFALZ] Coat of arms Did everyone know what their coat of arms was /were in 1700's 1800's or earlier? Even a concentration of the >name would help >Thanks It is not possible to know what you have already tried in your research. There are four entries in the IGI for Michael Menz(en), have you investigated them? www.familysearch.org If Michael was born in 1817 he would likely have married about 1840/ 41 (22-23 was the usual age) and this fits with your chronology. Without the name of his first wife you have only the son's names to go on but the IGI might yield some information about them. Neither of your family ancedotes is much help, especially that about "Hamberg." ShtetelSeeker at: www.jewishgen.org shows 12 Hamburgs and 11 Hombergs. I'd suggest you go into the online German phone book and determine where there are Menz or Menzens living today. That might provide a clue. If nothing turns up on the IGI and if you have some hints as to where there are Menzs today, you will need to determine if your the LDS Church has filmed the records' for that location and, if so, order them at your local Family History Center and search the films for your ancestor. On the US end, have you investigated the record of his second marriage for any clues as to where in Germany he might have originated? This is unlikely to provide any information but is worth investigating. Rob Hausman ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Robert E. 3. Hello: Just read Karen's response to the question about Hundheim and where people worshipped. I have a similar situation: I know my ancestors came from Bliesen and Namborn. Both are tiny villages near the larger Sankt-Wendel. Do you suppose Sankt-Wendel is where these people would have gone to worship if they were Catholic? Or would Sankt-Wendel hold duplicate copies of the church records? I ask these questions to try to narrow down my search. I found many many rolls of film on Sankt-Wendel indexed on the LDS site, but very few for Namborn and Bliesen. Thank you, Johnn St. Clair

    1. [PFALZ] von Sickingen in Pfalz history
    2. Karen E. Grossart
    3. From: "Mike Summerer" Sent: Thursday, August 24, 2000 Subject: Re: [PFALZ] BROSCHART/BROSCHARD, Wallonens (> Franz von Sickingen 1481-1523) was a military leader in the early >Reformation > The Thirty Years War ended in 1648 I am very interested in the above comment. This was translated to: "Franz Friedrich von Sickingen dismissed Johann Nikolaus Grossarth from his position of mayor of Feil in 1704 because, he as a catholic, married a Protestant woman and raised their children in her religion. He moved away to the Disibodenberger Hof [near Odernheim am Glan in der Pfalz] where he found a new home in the Protestant Dukedom of Pfalz-Zweibrücken." Could this be a descendant of the Franz von Sickingen (1481-1523) mentioned above? Is there a published genealogy of his family? I am also trying to locate the town of Feil mentioned in the paragraph about Johann Nikolaus Grossarth. There are two in Meyers lexicon: one which is only a few km from Odernheim and a had Lutheran church so it does not seen to fit the other, in Kr. Erstein in Elsass, is a Wlr = Weiler = a very small village. This is certainly a Catholic area, although I did find some evangelische listings in the FHC for this area. Would a "Weiler" have a Schultheiß? How would I find more information about a "Franz Friedrich von Sickingen" who would have been alive in 1704 and had control of a place named Feil? Thanks for any suggestions for where to look, Karen Grossart

    3. Louise, You are on the right list for Hundheim. Have you used the Hinzweiler church records? That is where people from Hundheim worshipped in the 1600s. Some later moved to the Bosenbach parish by the mid 1700s, but only a few ended up there. There are civil records for Hundheim starting in 1799. But the Hinzweiler records go back to 1648. I don't recall the Spohn name, but there are Kleins there.
