I am looking for information on ENGERS, Peter, born c. 1845 in or near the village of Engers on the Rhine (near Neuwied). He emigrated to the US in 1864, but I have been unable to find him listed in any of the collected ships' records. I would welcome any information about the ENGERS family, including names of any family members in Germany today. Thank you, Dee dottie706@aol.com
Dear Listers, I have received many emails from helpful folks and I want to thank you. Perhaps someday I will be able to locate the villages of the SEBASTIANS and the SCHEIDTS. If so, I want to go there personally. Some of you suggested ways I might go about the search and some just remarked about bad heredity which caused me to stumble around in darkness for so long. Heredity is certainly a factor. I am still open to suggestions, such as, "They were definitely born in Himmelfarb village, three miles SW of Munich," or whatever. Thank you, Tom the bewildered
I am researching the following - Adam LAUBENTHAL and Anna Maria THOMAS MARRIAGE: as shown in the front of the Family Bible Adam Laubenthal born on August 10, 1829, in Kaifenheim, Mayor's office, Kaisersesch in the district of Cochem, administrative district of Koblenz, Kingdom of Prussia married with Anna Maria Thomas, nce von Gevenich born on September 20, 1830, Mayor's office, Lutzerat'h district of Cochem, Administrative district of Koblenz, Kingdom of Prussia (the above was evidently a copy of their marriage license? which was written in German. Another note written in English reads "Now living in the United States of North America.") I have been working with the LDS Films for both above mentioned towns and believe I have found Anna Maria Thomas but there are several of this name and a couple with baptism dates that could work. the Laubenthal name is another story - Kaifenheim is full of the surname but there is only two with given name of Adam, even as a middle name, that the baptism dates would work. Any suggestions or help will be appreciated. Also can someone tell me what the "nce von Gevenich" translates to in English. JoAnn Spore, Tucson, AZ

-- head -- I can surely sympathize. I like so-o-o many French-Canadians had the name Joseph added to my name (i.e. Joseph-Richard). My sister and literally thousands of women were named Marie-something. This is just something one has to keep in mind when researching. I am afraid there is no easy answer. Dear Russ and Pfalz Listers, The question came up about my Adam and his brother Andreas SEBASTIAN--maybe these were middle names? I sure have thought about it, and why not? My middle name is Sebastian. So is J.S. Bach's middle name. He had more talent then I did, through. He had some 16 children, I hear, and I had only two. AND all the sons were named Johann. Only the middle names changed. Yes I have thought about it. I don't know what to do about it. What do you other listers do about the practice of a father who names all his kids his own name? Greetings, Manuela, I tried to contact you using your personal e-mail address, but all were returned to me. Reason was "unheard of". I thought you would like to know this in case you were unaware of this fact. I, again, want to thank you for all your help. It went far beyond my expectations. I have a question about fees. How do I pay and what is the usual fee for research of Civil and church records? Will they contact me if record is or not found in their archives? Thank you again and If I can be of service to you in the USA, Let me know. Dee in Arizona DEEBEE4@PRODIGY.NET

Dear Pfalz Listers, Long postings to lists seldom work, so I did not tell all in my request for help on the SEBASTIAN-SCHEIDT lines. So now I will tell more. I am responsible for the LDS Ancestral file listings on Adam SEBASTIAN. Those got to the Ancestral File by accident, when I was younger and stupid. Now I am older, but those files stay the same. Through various methods of deceit and cunning, I learned that the Catholic church Adam and Hedwig were part of, was St. Martin of Tours (in Louisville). I have copies of some of the Church's documents about them, but no mention of their home villages. They are buried in St. Michael Cemetery in Louisville. Adam's tombstone clearly says "Adam Sebastian," but the rest of the information on the stone is illegible and does not lend itself to the usual methods of deciphering with paper, chalk, etc. The staff of the four Catholic Cemeteries in Louisville has been wonderful, but information on the deceased is skimpy. In Louisville, a southern city, back in 1874, little notice was taken of a German Catholic immigrant's death. Death certificates were not seriously used until 1911. I need to concentrate on German records. SEBASTIAN and SCHEIDT were unusual surnames for Germans, so that ought to count for something. I looked in the LDS IGI files for Sebastian and I found a few areas where Sebastians congregated. But Adam and Andreas were not among them. Probably Adam was from an area where the LDS did not photograph records. Thanks to all of you who have taken the trouble to help. Tom the bewildered

Dear Listers, The Bavarian List sent me. Not because I was misbehaving, but perhaps because I got off to a Pfalz start. There are two lines I am trying to follow. They ended up in Louisville, KY, in the middle of the last century. One of them said he was from Bavaria, but he could have been in error. He was Adam Sebastian, a Catholic gentleman, b. about 1830. There was a brother, Andreas Sebastian, I believe, who showed up for the first time on the 1860 census. I have no idea where the Sebastian boys hailed from. Then there was Adam's wife, Hedwig Scheidt. Her parents were Jacob and Elizabeth. They were born about 1820. Hedwig came to America in 1865. One of these, Sebastian or Scheidt claimed to be French from Alsace and Lorraine. Don't know which. Everybody swam. There were no ship or Boeing 747 records on them at all. Any insights at all would be helpful. The 1937 Louisville flood of the Ohio River wiped out all immigration records. Tom the bewildered

As you likely know there are several families of Kuhns in that Parish over the hundred years or so and at least four Johann Heinrichs: born 12 Jun 1746, 30 Mar 1759 and 4 Dec 1768. The last, would be 30 at the time of his marriage and while that is rather late, not improbable. His parents are listed in the IGI and even if he is not the correct one the Parish record appears sufficiently complete that you should be able to reconstruct the linked Kuhn families and find the correct Johann Heinrich on the Film.
