    1. [PFALZ] Germans to America responses

    3. Here are a few responses to my inquiry about the "Germans to America" series. Kathy - --------------------------------- The column for place of birth on the Germans to America that shows "000". If you will read the introduction to this series, the authors explain that the material for these volumes was taken from the Passenger Manifests that the US Government required the master of ships bringing in people, to provide the Immigration Service a list of its passengers with the other data. So when the "Purser" on later ships, whose duty was to do this, did not assertain the village of origin of the passenger he put in "000". In earlier times, the First or Second Mate had to do this job, and again the same reason for putting in "000" for the village of origin when the immigrant was asked. Frequently the recording person found that the name of the village was too long to put on the space on the manifest, he put "000". Al and Margaret - ---------------------------------------- Here are a couple of web pages that discuss some of the problems with the GERMANS TO AMERICA series: http://www.uni-oldenburg.de/nausa/pitfal.htm http://www.genealogienetz.de/gene/misc/emig/gta-revu.html Brian - --------------------------------------- In our previous e-mail we forgot to mention that the Germans to America series was transcribed from microfilms of the actual handwritten Manifests. Any time transcriptions are made from source microfims, the authors caution that many of the 35mm microfilms of the Manifests were difficult to decipher. Al and Margaret

    3. Hello all-- I recently found a Bavarian town designation for my emigrant ancestor in a Kirchenbuch for an Evangelical church founded by German emigrants in Audrain County, MO. The town is listed as "LISTERSCHIED", Fz(?)Bayern. I have found no such town listed on any map -- present day or prior to reunification. Does anyone have any ideas on what Bavarian town the name "LISTERSCHIED" might be indicating? Thanks for any and all input -- Paul Kieffaber

Has anyone else noticed this > discrepancy/contradiction? This is one of the known flaws of the Germans to America series, that 000 (zero zero zero) and O00 (oh zero zero) look alike in the font used for the book (and are easily confused in almost any font). 000 means no origin listed, O00 means Obermoellrich. Worse yet, GtA can list 000 even when the original passenger arrival list clearly gives a place (or at least state) of origin. Always go to the original list! And if the departure was from Hamburg, always go to the Hamburg list as well! -- =Jim Eggert EggertJ@crosswinds.net

    3. I am confused about the first 4-5 volumes of the "Germans to America" series. I noticed that in Volumes 1 & 2 there is no real designation given to 'Unknown Village' of the immigrants in the key. In the key at the beginning of Volumes 3 & 4, OOO is the designation for 'Unknown Village'. In Volumes 1, 2, 3, & 4, OOO is also the designation for the village Obermoellrich when it is mentioned. I have noticed in these 4 volumes that there are many immigrants with the village designation OOO. It is my belief that all these hundreds of people could not have possibly come from this one village. My ancestor had the OOO designation for his village of origin and I know that Obermoellrich has not been one of the villages mentioned in my research of this ancestor. Has anyone else noticed this discrepancy/contradiction? Would someone please explain how to understand and decipher this information in the "Germans to America"? Thank you, Kathy

We would like to obtain a copy of his German birth certificate, but have no idea how to accomplish this. Any help would be appreciated. Lori Browning

He was living in Dierbach in 1809, re: Peter`s marriage record. I believe there may be a problem finding it because of the Napoleonic War ( destroyed ). Peter got married in Drachenbraun, Bas Rhin to Elizabeth MAUER. I think Catherina married Carl GEIGER Will appreciate any small led to look for this record. Richard

    3. Hello, there was a Groß Toitin in the Prussian province Pommern, district of Stettin, county of Demmin with 227 inhabitants registered in the census of May 27, 1939. Gross Toitin could perhaps be abreviated to Grosstoitin -> Grosstitin -> Grosstizin -> Grotizin. Who knows ? 3. Yvonne and Rob, The name Otremba does appear in the LDS IGI and the LDS Ancestral File. There are 4 listed in the IGI from Germany and all are from Schwarzenau, Westpreussen and were born/baptised from 1813 to 1824. Of the two in the LDS Ancestral File, one (whose birthplace is identified as "Mn") of their spouses was born in "Chonic, Porrussia". ShtetlSeeker does show a GERTHAUSEN and a GRIETHAUSEN in Germany today that are also somewhat phonetically similar. In addition, there is a KROTOSHIN in the Ukraine. >Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2000 20:53:10 -0500 >From: "Robert E. 3. As you likely know, you have an interesting question. If you put Grotizen into the Shtetlseeker search engine you turn up no really good match, the best being Groothusen which hardly qualifies as Prussia, even in 1870 and through the fog of some immigration agent's perception of Germany. While perhaps other will have a better idea, my best guess is that your translation is faulty. While I could be wrong, neither Grotizin nor Otremba sound particularly Germanic.
