    1. Re: [PETRIE-SCOTLAND] Petrie connections in Ontario Canada
    2. HI George, I am not good with the computer so am adding this message to one previously sent to you. I recall that you, at one time, had been in touch with my Brother-in-law, George Jones. He passed away this past Sunday morning just two weeks prior to his 94th birthday. He was very active with our family genealogy, especially the Scottish family. My nephew in Virginia will now take the helm. I'm 82 so not much help in this area but do enjoy all the correspondence. With regards to my Scottish family around the world. Barbara Sanborn, nee Petrie ---- George Brander <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi Derek I don't think your Robert is the son of William Petrie and Ann Wink. Going back to what you know. You say he was the father of James Petrie born 1843. The James Petrie born 1843 in Auchidoir was the illegitimate son of Robert Petrie and Ann Collie. They did not marry each other. Ann Collie subsequently married someone named Coutts and then an Alex Stewart. This James who was a shepherd and sheep dealer married Mary Tough and they are living with Mary's parents in 1871 with James, Jessie and Mary. You can track them through Freecen. He had a second wife Helen Tawse but I know nothing of her. I think your Robert is the son of Alexander Petrie and Elspet Stuart or Stewart and he was born 1821. I mentioned him in a previous email. This Robert married Isabel or Isabella Marr in 1845 at Daviot, Again if you trawl through the census results for this Robert Petrie and his wife Isabella you will find that he is listed as a porter, a railway porter and a shore porter. Latterly he worked for a shipping company in Aberdeen. In 1861 he is living at 1 Canal Lane in the St Clements Ward of Aberdeen age 40 with his wife Isabella, daughters Ann aged 16 and Isabella age 4, Jane age 1 and son Robert age 6. He died 1891 and his parents were named as Alexander Petrie and Mary Stewart. It is likely that the informant of his death did not know that the mother was Elspet and not Mary. This often happens when the younger generation does not know the exact Christian names of grandparents. The other Robert Petrie son of William Petrie and Ann Wink worked a croft at Kennethmont so I am fairly certain he is not your man. Happy new year to you and I hope you are able to put the different pieces together.
