Hi Heather! Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I have had a spell of leave lately and have spent a lot of my time visiting my family in Strathardle, Atholl and Strathmore. To answer your queries; I have several relatives named "Ardle" (I totally agree with you, it is a beautiful name). The Ardle is the name of the river that gives its name to the Strath in which Kirkmichael is situated ("strath" means "wide river valley", as opposed to "glen", which simply denotes "valley"). I am descended from John Petrie & Elizabeth Reid, and am of the (senior) line of George Petrie & Margaret Reid.
