    3. Hello everyone, I am wondering how we find out if people went abroad? I have a few "missing " people who just disappear from all the records, census reports, etc. The only thing I can think of is that they have moved away to Australia, America or Canada. I know one of my Petries moved to Australia - William Petrie - but I am having difficulty finding anything on him. Does anyone know how to access his records in Australia? If anyone has any ideas, I would be very grateful. Thanks, Jennifer Petrie

    3. Hi there David (Geneaolgy) I would be so grateful if you could give me some more information on the Strathgarry Petries. I have down the children of Alexander Petrie and Joan Douglas, but there are a lot of gaps. I don't have any info on Alexander Stewart Petrie, Hinton, Charles or Alistair Petrie and the info I have on the rest in sketchy. These were my grandfather's first cousins. I was talking to Elma Cochrane last week ( grandchild of James and Susan Petrie) and she remembers Hinton being called "Hinty" and Margaret Mary who was killed in an accident. She thought it was a horse and cart accident, but I have it down here as a motor accident. If you could help in any way, I would be very grateful. Stephen PS My nephew is also Alexander Stewart Petrie, and my daughter is Georgina Petrie ( same I think as your grandmother) - strange how things turn out!

    3. Hi Jennifer, No doubt there will be better tips than this but here goes:- www.ellisisland.org for USA but don't think records start before 1892. I have found all my relatives I, personally, have looked for on there though. www.ancestry.com I took someone's advice and did the 14 day free trial. I researched intensely and, well before the time was up, I cancelled. I had no problems what so ever and was impressed. www.coraweb.com.au/shipgeneral.htm www.searchforancestors.com/records/passenger_html A search engine search throws up so many links - it's worth you looking and see what takes your fancy in relation to who/when. My searches re Australia/Canada have been confined to message boards for relatives living today and I was successful! 3. Hi Jennifer, It will depend when your Wiliam PETRIE died and what date, as to whether there will be any information on the Australian BDM websites. As far as I'm aware., only NSW and Victoria have online indexes and I have listed the dates. NSW - deaths December 1975 or earlier VICTORIA - deaths December 1985 or earlier. If of any interest, I can send you the links but they're easy to find anyway. Best wishes Janice Watson Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jennifer Petrie" <JenniferPetrie@hotmail.com> To: <petrie-scotland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 05, 2006 8:17 PM Subject: Re: [PETRIE-SCOTLAND] - how to find shipping records > > Hello everyone, > > I am wondering how we find out if people went abroad? 3. Hi Jennifer Just had a quick look on the NSW BDM's site and found there were 25 deaths from 1755-1975 with the name William Petrie 18 marriages from 1788-1955 Several mentions of William Petrie who wrote letters to Sir William Banks when I googled William Petrie. From there if you google William Petrie+Australia you will possibly come up withthe same results I got. If you want to access the BDM's site just google NSW BDM's Annette in cowra NSW
