Hi Patricia My Grandfather was William Petrie Birnie - Margaret Petrie b. Sandsting 1847 - the Petrie part of my Grandfather's name being her maiden surname and Birnie being that of his Father. I still have several members from that family line who still use this same naming pattern. I have a Christina Mackay Petrie born in NZ - the last child of 8 to James Petrie and Jane Robertson. I have no idea where the Mackay comes from. James & Jane had been in NZ for 20 years when Christina was born. I think this is just a coincidence and don't think there is a connection with Helen's friend. Helen you don't say if you have got a birth certificate for David Petrie MacKay. This might tell you something.
