    3. Hi there - in particular Karen and Stephen Remember Catherine? She had daughter Jemima HARRIS Petrie in 1873, who in turn was mother to David Grant Petrie. Don't know why I haven't done this before but I wondered where she was in 1871 ..... but perhaps you have already thought of it though! So ..... I found her in the parish of Rattray - being a General Servant to the Harris family! Surprise, surprise! The location is 'Glenballoch', up the Bonnington road out of New Rattray - on the modern map it is called 'Kynballoch'. The entry is: George Harris Head Mar 44 Farmer of 200 acres employing 3 men/2 boys/2 women bn Rattray Helen Harris Wife Mar 40 Farmer's wife bn Glenisla, Forfarshire James Harris Son Unm 15 Farmers Son bn Perthshire, Rattray Isabella H Daug 14 " Daug ditto John H Son 12 Scholar ditto Jane H Daug 11 " ditto Betsy H " 9 " ditto Jessie H " 7 " ditto Margaret H " 5 " ditto William H Son 3 ditto Duncan H " 1 ditto Margaret McKenzie Servant Unm 21 Dairy Maid bn Forfarshire, Inver? 3. Thanks again Heather So Catherine was 17 when she had Jemima! She was married to a Mr Shaw by 1881, and had 2 more children by him. The question is - was the father the son of the family (James Harris, age 17 at the time of Jemima's birth) or the head (George Harris, age 46 at the time of Jemima's birth)?? I don't suppose we shall find out. 17 was a wee bit young for those days - but you never know!! It is also a question of "like mother (Catherine) like daughter (Jemima)"- as she had David when she was 21. I do like the way that then fathers were named by using the surname as a middle name. Pityb that they didn't admit it by being on the birth certificate. Of course, this was way before the Child Support Agency!
