Gavin The John Petrie at Abdie is on the staff of Lindores House which is occupied by Catherine, Lady Maitland. Parish 400 - book 2 - schedule 9 His occupation is " boy ". To be employed there, he quite possibly had been spoken for. The other surnames in the household staff are Loues (Portuguese), Melville, Nilson, Baxter and Wilkie. Are any of these names in your tree as they may be related in a roundabout way. The only other Petrie in Abdie Parish is in book 4. May Petrie age 85 a widow who has reverted to here maiden name. Born Flisk, which is in the opposite direction to Kettle. There is also a Patrie family near enough next door to old May, but all were born in the north of Fife. Murray
Thank you Murray I think he has got to be my 'boy', as he appears to be the only John of the right age and birth place in the 1851 census. I do have WILKIE and MELVILLE in my tree. If you happen to have the details of those people from the census I would appreciate you sending them.
