Hi Alistair I have William well documented in County Durham where he married and joined the Durham County Constabulary (30 yrs) and his birth date is based on their records and census. July 1850. Now all the family have been brought up on him coming from Broughty Ferry, Angus and again, the police records state he comes from Forfar, although no town/village is given. The only difference to this is a newspaper reference (his death was reported after his retirement) which states that he was an Aberdeenshire man. On his marriage certificate his father's name is given as William a Labourer. That's it in a nutshell. I'm completely stuck.
