Welcome back Norma! Its good to hear the Petrie inbox pinging regularly again. Its just doesn't seem to happen without you! Just in case there is anyone new on the site, I am still interested in finding some of the many relations I must have in Dundee. Any descendants of William Petrie and Ann Nicoll, married Dundee 26th November 1834 would be of interest. Am also looking for any new information on Murroes Petries in the 1700s. One of my interests has always been the earliest origins of the Petries. Many groups are organising DNA testing and analysis to establish the genetic origins of the family name. I wondered if any Petries had done this yet, and if so, does it throw any light on Petrie genetic makeup? The Gregor Clan has a DNA project running and this is of direct interest to Petries, who are a Sept of the clan, as many of you will know. During the persecution of the clan and the banning of the name Gregor and its other versions, clan members adopted several other names, including, it is believed, Petrie. This is recognised in the status Petries have within the clan. Because of this scattering of the clan and the loss of the name, a DNA project is under way to see if there is a direct line back to Celtic origins. Some associated name groups have also been tested to see if they have strong genetic links to the clan, but not Petrie so far. The early Celtic origins seem to be proved, but the links to the associated names are still not. There is, however, a Gregor genetic profile established that can be compared against. Hi there Jim, If you are looking for cousins, then my husband Gordon Petrie is decended from William and Ann Nicol through Alexander P (Maryton, Montrose) and Ann Duncan - James P (Montrose) and Helen Milne - William Ogg P (Fetteresso) and Charlotte Pirie - and Fenton Webster P (Peterhead) and Margaret Macart McCoss to Gordon P (Peterhead). We live in Glasgow. I only had William and Ann through Alexanders death certificate, nothing more about them.
