George, I have a Samuel Petrie, born 1851, at Careston near Brechin, but think it unlikely that this is the one you are looking for. Although young, single men moved around from farm to farm, it is unlikely that they would move that far, unless it was to a relatives' farm. The difference in DOB is also more than you would expect. Samuel (Burgess) Petrie's parent were, however, Robert Petrie and Marjory Robertson - could she be a sister of Ann? Marjory is given as born Arbroath around 1811 to Robert Robertson and Marjory Justice, so again unlikely. Dear George, Sorry for the long delay but Samuel Petrie would appear to be the son of Samuel Petrie and Margaret Dey. Although the birthdate and place are incorrect, Samuel lived until 1919 and there is no other trace of him in the Scotlandspeople census record for 1871. I checked a few years either side so I do not think there is any doubt.
