Is there someone who would be willing to do a very precise library look-up for me in Edinburgh, or possibly your local Scottish library? I am simply trying to find out if there is a record of the existence of the architectural practice of my great-grandfather, Mitchell Graham (no, not a Petrie, but I don't know where else to ask for this kind of help). His practice, Mitchell Graham and Sons, in Edinburgh, was supposedly employed on the Fourth Rail Bridge project, abt 1885-1890, though I do not know in what capacity. I only wish to find evidence that such a practice actually existed, and possibly an address in Edinburgh for the business or whatever other information might be readily available. I have been told by the West Search Room Archivist, National Archives of Scotland, West Register House Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, that I might consult the "Directory of British Architects 1834-1900," London (1993) by the British Architectural Library and Royal Institute of British Architects for a listing of practicing architects in Edinburgh at the time of Fourth Rail Bridge construction, . "There is a copy here in the West Search Room but you may also find a copy in your nearest main library." I'm sorry, but my nearest British library is thousands of miles across the Atlantic... (sigh!) The archivist also stated: "There are Post Office Directories for Edinburgh and Leith for the period 1850-1900, and these contain entries for architectural practices. Available at Edinburgh Central Library, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EG. A quick look in either of these sources (any of the years 1885-1890) should suffice. It will either be there or it won't. I would be very thankful for any assistance. I would be delighted to return the favor if anyone has any bit of information that wants searching in or about the city of Philadelphia, in the state of Pennsylvania, USA. By the way, I do have Petrie ancestors and am waiting with great anticipation for the results of the coming Gathering. I'll be there in spirit...
