Margaret PETRIE, born c 1765 in Scotland, married John SIMPSON and baptized 6 children in Rothes (Moray) 1799-1812. They came to Canada 1815 (Margaret's birthdate is from Canadian sources). Simpson is a mystery. For Margaret, however, the most likely baptism from the Scottish Church records is in 1765 Elgin, daughter of George PETRIE and Janet CALDER. George PETRIE probably was a blacksmith, and son and grandson of blacksmiths in Elgin. He seems to be the son bapt 1740 of Thomas PETRIE and Margaret BUIE in Elgin. Petrie blacksmiths and other tradesmen remained in Elgin into the 19th century. Janet CALDER may be the daughter bapt 1735 of Alexander CALDER and Margaret FORSYTH in Earnside, Alves. I would be grateful to hear from anyone with possible knowledge of these people, beginning of course with Margaret PETRIE. Thank you. Kris Inwood [email protected]
