    1. Re: [Petrie-Scotland] Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie

    3. Just a wee note to point out Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie's Australian connection. His mother, Ann who married William Petrie, was the daughter of Capt Matthew Flinders was a Royal Navy navigator who came to Australia in 1795 and charted much of the Australian coastline. In 1802 he sailed from Port Jackson (Sydney) and returned almost a year later after navigating our huge continent. What courage those early sailors had ! He is still considered a hero here today and most Australian school children grew up learning of his exploits, particularly one episode of his navigation efforts in a tiny, tiny craft appropriately named "Tom Thumb". While returning to England in 1803, he was interned by French authorities at Mauritius until 1810. His book "Voyage to Terra Australis" appeared on the day of his death on July 19, 1814. Having said this, I don't know anything about the William Petrie who married his daughter.
