Greetings listers, I continue to enjoy reading about all the PETRIE information on this site and was excited (and a bit jealous) as you had your wonderful get-together in Scotland! I have been trying to find information about my great Grandmother, Catherine PETRIE of Wick, Caithness. She is listed on the 1861 Census for Wick as being a 12 year old servant on the BREMNER farm, The Barnyards, just outside of Wick, as a cowherd. Next I have her 1872 marriage certificate in Glasgow, to Andrew MOYES, of Fife who is a journeyman Tilesetter or Mason. On that marriage certificate she lists her father as George PETRIE, Blacksmith (deceased) of Wick and her mother (deceased) as Elizabeth CAMPBELL. Norma previously suggested that George PETRIE, her father, might have been the oldest son of Jane DALLAS, the wife of Donald PETRIE of Wick. On Jane DALLAS' death certificate in 1855 her son George PETRIE is listed as the oldest child and it turns out he was born in Glasgow and was brought to Wick as a child under the age of five. Try as I might, I've not been able to connect this George with Catherine. On the 1841 census for Wick there is a George PETRIE listed on page 19, enumeration district 6, for the Parish of Wick. This George PETRIE is 25 years old and is married to a Christina (I'm not sure of the spelling of her name, it's difficult to read on my copy of the census). The census lists him as "Shoe" under occupation. they have no children listed on this form. Their place is listed as ?ediggle Square. Also on the 1841 Census for Wick there is a George PETRIE, Enumeration district 7, page 3, as 55 years old, occupation "shoe", born in Caithness. His wife is Hellen, age 50, and they have two children, apparently twins.....age 15, Charlotte and Hellen, and five other children. Further information lists a George PETRIE listed in the 1837 trades directory as a shoemaker. He is again listed in 1852 and not thereafter. I'm not sure if this is the older or younger George listed in the 1841 census. Elizabeth CAMPBELL is listed as a 14 year old girl on the 1841 census in Westerseat near Wick. The family moved closer to Wick, near Pulteneytown by 1851. Her father is listed on the 1841 census as William CAMPBELL, Ag. Lab., age 55 and his wife Catherine and four children. Since it is quite possible that this is Catherine's mother and that she named her daughter after her mother. If George PETRIE (age 25 on the 1841 census) is widowed some time after the 1841 census, did he then marry Elizabeth CAMPBELL: and was Catherine incorrect when she listed her father's occupation as a blacksmith? If anyone connects with any of these families, I'd appreciate any help. I feel I'm hitting a blank wall again....any suggestions for something I may have overlooked would also be appreciated.
