Hello everyone, The latest wedding of a PETRIE descendent took place in Oxford, England, last Saturday 4th August 2001 when my daughter Roz (Rosemary) Heath (great grand-daughter of Jessie PETRIE 1864 - 1930 Rhynie, Aberdeenshire) married Jeremy Brown. It was my pleasure to walk her up the Aisle and I have put a "beauty and the beast" photo on the PETRIE website. GENEALOGICAL NOTE Sometimes we researchers have difficulty in tracing a marriage, or knowing exactly when and where someone was married. Roz and Jerry's experiences may give you an insight into the difficulties which can arise, as they were married 3 times in 2 weeks. FIRSTLY On 19th July 2001 (the 50th anniversary of my retirement from the Royal Air Force !!!) Roz and Jerry submitted and registered the documents for their marriage in Johannesburg, South Africa. This made their marriage legal. SECONDLY On 20th July 2001 Roz and Jerry had a Civil Wedding ceremony in Johannesburg, South Africa. This was of sufficient interest to be reported in a National newspaper - Johannesburg Saturday Star - as a news item. Jerry was so busy at work that he just nipped out during the office tea break to get married ! THIRDLY On 4th August 2001 Roz and Jerry had their marriage Blessed at a religious ceremony in Oxford, England. The service, a Blessing, was almost identical to a wedding. I walked her up the Aisle, gave her away, their hands were joined, rings were blessed and exchanged, vows were exchanged and they were pronounced Man and Wife. BUT - because it was not a wedding - there were no Banns, Register or Certificate. So, next time that you have trouble finding evidence of a wedding ............... just think how you would go about researching this one ! Derek What a beautiful photo. Beautiful bride, beautiful hat and beautiful dress, and of course a very proud Dad. I am signing off now because I am off to Dundee in the morning and on to Aberdeen on Sunday. Looking forward to all the excitment of the Gathering.
