    3. Hello Pam, Many thanks for this additional information, your 1881 census details for the McLAREN family certainly seem to have helped you find new info. With regard to the MARY ANN PETRIE who you found in the 1881 census at Arbroath, through her address and age I believe this may be MARY ANN SMALL widow of WILLIAM PETRIE from Arbroath, they married in 1851...although I need to find further info to prove for sure that this is her. We know from details on your Mary Ann Petrie's marriage certificate to John McLaren in 1864 that her father WILLIAM PETRIE was deceased and her mother MARY ANN FERGUSON was apparently still alive. I checked back my wee note book for my SRO visits and find that I have tried a search for you using the surname cross reference facility for married women for a Petrie/Ferguson death in Scotland through from 1855 till 1930... with no death found. This may indicate that she has died outside Scotland or she has re-married and her Petrie marriage has not been recorded on her death certificate, so does not show up in the index. Since you know the McLaren family returned to America, could her Mother have gone with them ??
