All, I have become interested in the Petrie family through research into my Shearer family roots in Orkney, Scotland. My great-grandfather, Peter Shearer, born 4 March 1840 to David Shearer and Margaret Tait in Holm and Paplay, had older siblings, David, born 23 March 1833, and Jane, born 19 September 1835. According to the records that I've researched, Jane Shearer married Archibald Petrie (christened 14 January 1834 in Holm and Paplay) on 6 May 1858, and they had at least eight children: David Shearer Petrie, 28 February 1859; Jane or Jean Petrie, 17 July 1862; Margaret Tait Petrie, 16 December 1863; Euphemia Eunson Petrie, 29 May 1865; Isabella Petrie, 5 February, 1868; Ann Swanney Petrie, 11 March 1870; Jessie Agnus Petrie, 17 June 1872; and, John Petrie, 4 years old when the 1881 census was enumerated. I am interested in learning more about the decendents of Archibald and Jane, and in tracing Archibald's family back as far as possible. Hello John, I have a transcription of Archibald & Jane's Marriage certificate in my files Marriage Certificate Ref: 1858 HOLM, Orkney Page 1 Entry 1 source Scottish Records Office On 06 May 1858 at West Graves, Holm, Orkney (after banns of United Presbyterian Church) ARCHIBALD PETRIE Age 29 of Grameshall (sic) Holm Farm Servant Bachelor Parents: JOHN PETRIE - Farmer JANET PETRIE ms FOUBISTER JANE SHEARER Age 22 at West Graves, Holm Domestic Servant Spinster Parents: DAVID SHEARER - Farmer - deceased MARGARET SHEARER ms TAIT Witnesses: DAVID PETRIE WILLIAM SHEARER ************ (Note: Janet Foubister aka Jessie Foubister) His parents - John Petrie & Jessie Foubister married in 1812 at St. Andrews, Orkney and I know of 8 children to this couple (including the above Archibald) all birth details were found in IGI except for their son Samuel who was found in the undernoted death certificate. This is all I have on the database for them at the moment John, but Janine (also on this list) has been extensively researching the Petrie's of Orkney and she might have further information on some of these Petrie's...
