It only took a month but I finally was able to access the latest rage over here -- the passenger records of arrivals at Ellis Island, New York in the early 1900's. Records give the passenger's name, ethnicity, residence, name of ship, age at arrival, year of arrival, port of departure, and marital status. A search of the name PETRIE of Scottish ethnicity yielded 236 results. For those of you who live in Great Britain, Australia, or New Zealand, the time difference works in your favor and your searches should take less time.
