    1. Re: [Petrie-Scotland] New Lister - William Petrie
    2. Ann, I, too, am looking for a William Petrie in the Dundee area. Mine, however, does not match your timeframe. Information that I have is on William's daughter, Mary Ann Petrie. I have her parents, per her marriage certificate, as William Petrie and Mary Ann Petrie ms. Ferguson. My Mary Ann married 2 December 1864 and at that time her father (William Petrie) was listed on the marriage certificate as "seaman, deceased". I'm wondering if the William Petire you are looking for information on could possibly be a sibling of my Mary Ann. You said your William's father was also William Petrie. Do you know your William's mothers name? 3. Hi Listers In May last year my request for help was routed through to your list via the Angus mailing list. Well I'm still no further forward and thought I would join your wonderful list in the hopes that at some point some connection may be found with my g-grandfather. What I know is as follows: William Petrie moved to County Durham sometime before 1873. He joined Durham County Constabulary in Jan 1873 and I have his life from then reasonably well documented. In a listing of officers of 1892 his county of birth is given as Forfar and his year of birth July 1850. His trade before entering the police is Farm Servant. On his marriage certificate (he married in Co Durham) his father is given as William Petrie, Labourer. On the census records his place of birth is given either as Scotland or Scotland Forfarshire. And that's it. I cannot get the connection back into Scotland. I was always told that he came from Broughty Ferry but I am now of the opinion that this isn't right. I am hoping that someone on the list may have a William Petrie in their line which may fit. Every hopeful Ann Watt --------------------------------- Yahoo! 3. HI Janine! My gg-grandmother Elizabeth Brown was a Petrie. Her & her husband George came to Ontario abt. 1830-40. They had 8 children, the first couple might have been born in Scotland. I assumed no other member of either family came but on one of the children's marriage certificates was a John B. Petrie. I'd assume he'd be a relative but don't no where he went or anything. I thought perhaps there might have been a connection as Niagara Falls & Dundas, Ont. aren't that far from each other. It was worth a try! Thanks! 3. Hi Cynthia John didn't have a middle name. He went to Niagara Falls around 1871. His wife Margaret and their daughter came shortly afterwards and then they had 2 more girls before his wife died. He then married Loretta Coughill who also had 3 daughters. Then together they had 6 more children. My great grandfather built a house on 1st. 3. Hi Karen, My GG-Grandfather was Andrew Petrie, born in Kirkmichael, Perthshire (1831). His parents were Alexander Petrie (born 1788) and Margaret Rattray. The furthest back I can go is Alexander's parents: Alexander Petrie and Annie Robertson (married 1786). My Grandfather and Great-Grandfather were born in Glasgow. I look forward to hearing from you about your ancestor's from Kirkmichael. -Annie ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Karen & Maurice" <laroccaclan@iprimus.com.au> Reply-To: PETRIE-SCOTLAND-L@rootsweb.com To: PETRIE-SCOTLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [Petrie-Scotland] Hello!! 3. Hello everyone, It has been such a long time since I last made contact with the list! Lovely to see some activity and would love to learn any news of Norma. My Petrie connection is as follows - My Gt.Gt. Grandmother was Isobel Petrie, born 13 Nov 1793 in Cambustown, Monikie. Her sister was Ann born 11 May 1788 and her brother James was born 17 April 1790. Their parents were William Petrie and Jannet Watson who married in Monifieth 14 October 1786. Jannet died 10 February 1794 in Monikie. Now I have yet to prove the following but after wonderful help from Norma, I am 95% sure that the family then moved to Arbroath (where William was probably born 11 April 1759, the son of James Petrie and Ann Bowden). William married Agnes/Jean Burns 23 June 1794 and between 1795 and 1813 they had eight children - Agnes(1), Barbara, William, Jean, John, George, Alexander and Agnes(2). On various records Isobel Petrie's father is stated as William Petrie of Arbroath, Carrier. He died in 1844 and is buried in Arbroath Abbey. Isobel married my Gt. Gt. Grandfather, John Chaplin and they lived in Dundee. I have yet to make contact with any family members but hope springs eternal. Elva Clark (NZ)

    3. Hi Bruce According to the death certificate of Alexander in 1865, who married Jane Sangster, he was a weaver. I don't think this is your Alexander. Sorry. Patricia -----Original Message----- From: BruceArnld@aol.com [mailto:BruceArnld@aol.com] Sent: Monday, 13 March 2006 7:53 a.m. To: PETRIE-SCOTLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Petrie-Scotland] Hello from New Zealand Patricia: Do you have any more information about your Alexander Petrie? My g grandfather, James Petrie, b. 4 Jun 1838 in Arbroath, Angus, Scotland had a birth certificate that said, Child: James Petrie, Mother: Mary Jarron; Father: "Alias" Petrie. This suggests that he was born an illegitimate child. With the help of Norma Thain who found his marriage certificate when he married Helen Wightman on 3 Sep 1890 after the death of his first wife, Jessie Sim on 17 Jul 1888, his father is listed as Alexander Petrie, master baker. Since I do not know which of the various Alexanders who appear in Arbroath records mine might be, I have a "stone wall" which prevents me from getting further back in my ancestry search. If you even knew he was a master baker, it would give me some hope that tracing his line back further had some change of legitimacy for my line. My mother was Mary Edna Petrie, born in Beverly, MA in 1905. Her father was James Petrie, b. 18 Feb 1867 in Arbroath. Since you show your Alexander Petrie having married Jane Sangster in 1833, he could be my gg grandfather in terms of date timing. With James being born in 1838, the period could fit.
