Greetings everybody and an especially big welcome back to Norma. The list has been rather quiet without your presence. Below are my PETRIE's of interest. Would be delighted to hear from anybody who has a connection or would like any details on these PETRIE's. Thanks Norma, it was good to get into the site again and even better to see the flurry of emails since your return. I think you have fired everyone up again! Yes, I am still an orphan and think that I will have to be satisfied with my William WHYTE and Margaret PETRIE connections and also my grandchildren who are decendents of Andrew PETRIE and of course me. When I looked at some of the files in the filing cabinet I had trouble with some where they were mostly goobledygook and some with the writing with no breaks between words making them very difficult to read. Am I doing something wrong, is there something I should alter on my comlputer which will fix that? Annette in Cowra

Hi Bruce: Bonnie Petee brought to my attention the fact that she and I are cited as sources below. In reading the lines, I see that you have "Children of JANET PETRIE and JOHN SKIRLING" ( changed late 1700's to Stirling ) as James, George, Alexander, Patrick, David, William and Robert. I also see my name as #4 in Endnotes, but unsure which part of my data you are using, as my birth dates for all but James and Alexander are 'about' for birth year. Can you tell me where you found my lines - site and search - and what sections of the lines below represent what you found at the site? I would much appreciate knowing where you found their dates of death also. Thanks, 'cousin' Catherine ----- Original Message ----- From: "lademill" <lademill@aol.com> To: <petrie-scotland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 25, 2006 1:32 PM Subject: Re: [PETRIE-SCOTLAND] Petrie Ancestors Hi Norma thanks for the information. I looked to see if your line is connected to mine. I see a possible fit with your Thomas Petrie being my one christened 26 Jan 1763 and born to James Petrie & Margaret Stalker married in 1727. I have no record of who this Thomas married. He is the only Thomas I can find who is born in Monikie at the right time, hardly positive evidence. If he does link in the I have another 2 generations back which may link in. Below is the info I have so far. I hope it is of use to you. Feel free to keep me right if you find any errors. (he owned and operated a big lumber mill there) married Margaret MacGregor, b.1830, d.1911, who was one of ten children of Elizabeth Petrie, d.1870 at Elma, Ont., and Donald MacGrigor, b.1792 in Kirchmichael. Their other children were Alexander, Duncan, Anne, Donald, Jean, Elizabeth, John, Janet and Margery. I have more on these siblings and some of their descendants, and on the MacGrigor forebears, but nothing on Elizabeth's (does anyone?). I think that, where there may be a connection, it would be helpful to exchange family trees as attachments (between individuals, not via the mailing list). Regards, William Easson, Toronto xi. JAMES6 STIRLING (JANET5 PETRIE, JAMES4, ANDREW3, ALEXANDER2, UNKNOWN1) was born 17 Jul 1792 in Panbride Parish Forfarshire, and died 1887 in Goderich Ontario Canada. He married ELIZABETH LAWRENCE 1825 in Panbride. Notes for JAMES STIRLING: Notes for JAMES STIRLING: From: "History of Clinton and Surrounding Community", Compilation by Clinton Womens Institute, published 1950 and held in Clinton Library: (Corroborated in document from unsigned family historian) Also from: "The Stirling Family", by Will and Maude Stirling: "On the fourth of July 1840 James Stirling, his wife and five sons, Sandy Stirling with his wife and family, and George Stirling with his wife and family left Carnoustie, Scotland for Canada. They sailed from Dundee, and it was six weeks and three days before the ship reached Quebec. A sad incident of the voyage was the burial at sea, of James age 7, son of James Stirling. After four days at Quebec they proceeded to Montreal, then on Durham boats they travelled to Kingston. After four days they embarked on a steam boat for Toronto and after three days they sailed for Hamilton. Their baggage was shipped in schooners to Goderich and the party travelled in two wagons to Stratford. There they changed wagons and journeyed to Mitchell. From there they could procure no vehicles and had to journey on foot to Goderich carrying two sick members of the family. The roads were terrible. A blacksmith from Goderich overtook the party and kindly carried the two sick ones part way in his wagon. Although the travelers had money to buy food, sometimes for a day or two they were without food and when they reached Uncle Willie’s shanty, guided there the last part of the trip by Nannie McKenzie, their disappointment was very great. This Uncle Willie was a brother of the three men of the party and had gone to Canada earlier to "spy out the land". He sent to Scotland such glowing reports that his three brothers with their families decided to find homes in this new country. An older brother, William, had come to Canada earlier. The three brothers and their families settled in Goderich township. They paid $3.00 an acre for their farms. This account was told me by Mrs. McGregor, daughter of Sandy Stirling. She was sixteen years of age when her family came to Canada. Complete Ancestral Line: All Families 26 From now on this narrative related the story of James the oldest of the four brothers. James brought with him from Scotland, records of his birth, marriage and a certificate from the Church of Scotland. James' sons later bought farms nearby, but William the youngest married Rebecca Jane Colwell, daughter of John Colwell of Porters Hill and they lived on the farm with the aged father who knew little about farming, having been a sailor. The mother, Elizabeth Lawrence her maiden name, died a few years after William's marriage and after her death James Stirling lived with his son William to the ripe old age of ninety-five years and some months. He was a fine looking, cheery old man, retaining his memory and good sight but had lost his hearing. However, he was blessed with good health until a few days before his death. His son John . . . " [See appendix A, The Stirling Family by Will and Maude Stirling] Per unknown family historian: "The family included many weavers, which was a large industry in that area. The most likely reason that the four sons emigrated to Canada was that the bottom dropped out of the market around 1840". Per: "Goderich Township Families", held by Goderich Library, "James was known as a great singer of Scottish Songs. In the 1861 census, James is listed as residing in a one story log house with son William. In 1843 his name occurs as residing on L33/C4, near Goderich. Hi Norma thanks for the information. Bruce Descendants of Alexander Petrie Generation No. 1 1. Will keep looking for the "missing link"- All the best, Stephen ----- Original Message ----- From: Stephen Baker<mailto:baker.karanest@btopenworld.com> To: petrie-scotland@rootsweb.com<mailto:petrie-scotland@rootsweb.com> Sent: 24 September 2006 17:33 Subject: Re: [PETRIE-SCOTLAND] Interesting Website Hi Stephen There seem to be TWO Petrie lines from Kirkmichael.
