    1. [PETRIE-SCOTLAND] KIRKMICHAEL Petries
    2. Stephen Baker
    3. Hi All Being a lazy so and so, could all the Kirkmichael Petries please respond to this at some stage, so that we can work out who we all are - and where we live now?! Karen - my other half - is from the same line as Heather Johnson, the Alexander & Annie branch of the line! We are trying - desparately - to prove a link to the John line, to which others, including Hazel Garside and - I think - Stephen Petrie, belong!! Hopefully we can get somewhere ....... Cheerio for now Stephen Baker Doncaster, England "KARANEST" 79 St. Wilfrid's Road Bessacarr DONCASTER South Yorkshire DN4 6AD Telephone 01302 536585

    3. Hi This is my second attempt to send this message, I hope that it goes this time using the new address, I was also able the get back into the Petrie web page using some lateral thinking! good to see Norma back, and the list stirred into action On the Wilkie side of my family I have Thomas WILKIE married to Janet WHITE (WHYTE) at Cupar, Fife, 31 Dec 1858, Janet had a sister, Margaret WHITE who married William PETRIE, date and place unknown, they had a son Robert PETRIE, poss b about 1850, who was the informant at the death of his aunt, Janet WILKIE nee WHITE at Kingskettle on the 20 Sept 1878. Thomas WILKIE died at Newburgh 1882 Does that help anyone or does it just confuse the issue, all those PETRIES in Fife must tie up somehow. Regards George N Henderson

    3. Hello all I haven't had this problem with this list, but - since having my PC restored - there have been others that have had emails sent - by "the system" straight into the "Norton antispam" folder within Outlook Express. Yes, I use Norton as my anti virus software; so if others have this issue, open the Norton antispam folder to check the messages there. Any that you see that are NOT spam, can be amended for future mailings by my selecting the message, click the right mouse button, select the Norton antispam option and then click on "This is not spam". The message will then go to your inbox, as will all future ones from that address. I use BT as my ISP. They also have a spam filter, which - in my case - prevents hundreds of spams per day from coming into Outlook Express. If you have a feeling that emails are being sent and you are not receiving them, try looking in the spam folder on the web version of your email. I have spotted a few in the past. You can do a similar thing there to "train" the system!! Thanks to Norma for putting a note on the Petrie files that I uploaded years ago. If any of you do NOT have the Windows picture and Fax viewer, there are probably others that work just as well. Hope this helps! Good luck Stephen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Norma Thain" <norma.thain@balgavies.demon.co.uk> To: <petrie-scotland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 11:45 PM Subject: [PETRIE-SCOTLAND] Duplicate Mails & Missing Messages from ourMailing List > Hello to Heather, Jennifer & Janine > and anyone else who may be experiencing duplicate or missing mails from > the > Petrie Scotland List. > > I can appreciate just how frustrating this must be, and am not sure > whether > you are all suffering the same problem, or are having individual spam/junk > mail filtering problems. > > Back in August Rootsweb sent an e.mail out to all their List Subscribers > announcing changes to be made to the Mailing Lists....... amongst the > changes they announced was the fact the list address was changing....in > our > case from Petrie-Scotland-L@rootsweb.com > to the new address of Petrie-Scotland@rootsweb.com > > Our list changed over on the 7th September. 3. Greetings from rainy Canada. I am reading all the interesting e-mails coming my way in the last few weeks. As you know I am one of the Kirkmichael Petries with connection to the Macgregors. Two year ago I was on a bus going from Aberdeen to Glasgow and saw a road sign pointing to Kirkmichael. I was so sorry I was unable to turn the bus north. Maybe next time. 2. Kit Timmons
    3. Hello to all - and a very special welcome back to Norma! I think everyone missed you! Norma - I'm not an orphan anymore! I posted my Bathgate Petrie tree at the MyFamily website... I have found this line only in Bathgate so far but have used only the most available resources. When time permits, I will dig deeper to see where they were before then! Almost all of the family living at the time relocated to Canada around 1871. Does anyone else have family in/from Bathgate for about a century prior to then? Greetings to all from Washington State! 3. Kari, I think you may be related to my wife rather than me. She has a different William Petrie and Anne Nicoll in her (distant) tree, who lived in the Montrose area in the late 1700's and early 1800's. I have no record of an Alexander as a son of my William and Anne who lived in Dundee in the early 1800's, although it is possible. My wife is descended from William and Anne's son Robert. I don't have a date for the marriage, but Robert was christened about 4th December 1798. Confusing isn't it? Any thoughts which William and Mary might be your husband's? Most of this information has come from Norma, so we can be confident about it. Once you know which William is yours, I can give you all the information I have. I, too, grew up thinking that my family had a very unusual name. There was an announcer on the radio by the name of Howard Petrie - I knew of no others. Isn't it wonderful to know that there are really so many of us. Unfortunately, I have not made any connections. My grandfather Robert Lawson Petrie was born in Newhills, a parish of Aberdeen and arrived in New Brunswick, Canada in 1873-1874 when he was about 8 yrs. old. His parents and aunts and uncles also came. We discovered that historical story on a trip to NB. There is a book entitled A History of the Scotch Colony, Victoria County, New Brunswick 1873-1998. Good luck on your search - mine seems to be at a dead end. My fascination with this stems from my personal experience living in central Massachusetts in the U.S., where the Petrie name is extremely rare. As a child, I was always aware that the only Petrie listing in our telephone directory (covering a fairly large city and its suburbs) was for our family. The name Petrie was a unique identity -- unlike our other friends who had common surnames. Since I've never actually met any one else with the Petrie name besides immediate family members, I was naïve to assume there were few Petries out there until I received a genealogy document passed on from an elderly family member from Canada in the 1980s. I realized that there were probably many distant Petrie cousins I never knew existed, but my imagination could not begin to comprehend the numbers of Petries out there until I discovered the internet and all the Petries who are actively seeking global connections with other Petrie descendants. This probably sounds quite a bit ignorant, but obviously, my isolation from other Petries and my adolescent experience having an unusual surname (in this area) no doubt contribute to my fascination with the discovery of all the Petries on-line. I am still surprised to receive an e-mail from a James or John Petrie, and then I quickly realize it isn't concerning my brothers, Jim and John, who are the only James and John Petries I know. It has been both fun and awe-inspiring to discover the diligent efforts by such loyal researchers, who make every effort to connect the Petries with their ancestors. On that note, I am grateful to Dave and Bob Petrie of Minnesota, USA for filling in many of the blanks for me on my own family tree. I'd be interested in corresponding with anyone who is a descendant of my ggggggf James Petrie b. 3 Mar 1701/02 Kinnell, Angus, Scotland, m. Isobel (Isabel) Clerk 4 Jun 1724 Parish of Craig (Craig is just south of Montrose), Angus, Scotland; Isobel (Isabel): b. Bef. 1708. If anyone is interested, I am willing to share family photos of my Petrie family in exchange for your Petrie family photos. Thanks to you all. 1. [PETRIE-SCOTLAND] Duplicate Mails & Missing Messages from our Mailing List
    2. Norma Thain
    3. Hello to Heather, Jennifer & Janine and anyone else who may be experiencing duplicate or missing mails from the Petrie Scotland List. I can appreciate just how frustrating this must be, and am not sure whether you are all suffering the same problem, or are having individual spam/junk mail filtering problems. Back in August Rootsweb sent an e.mail out to all their List Subscribers announcing changes to be made to the Mailing Lists....... amongst the changes they announced was the fact the list address was changing....in our case from Petrie-Scotland-L@rootsweb.com to the new address of Petrie-Scotland@rootsweb.com Our list changed over on the 7th September. ( I have pasted a copy of the original e.mail Rootsweb sent out to all listers in August, at the bottom of this e.mail) I suspect that some folks with spam/junk mail filters may find that this is causing a problem.if they have not added the new list address into their accepted addresses lists. The old list address still works though, so your filters are accepting mail sent by our listers to the old address, and others are being rejected when being sent by listers to the new address. I would suggest you ensure both the old and the new List addresses are accepted by your spam/junk mail filter software...... to avoid any further problems Do let me know if this fixes the problem.....and you can check to see if you have missed/lost any of the list e.mails at any time by checking in the List archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/PETRIE-SCOTLAND/ I also understand some folks maybe receiving more than one copy of the list e.mails into their in-box. This is often found to be the result of forwarding e.mails when you change your e.mail address, as you may have subscribed with your new e.mail address....but had not unsubscribed with your old e.mail address and your mail forwarding arrangement then also sends a copy onto you. Please e.mail me with details of your old e.mail address/es and I will unsubscribe them for you from the List admin page. 3. Hi Jennifer, It's amazing how reassuring it is just to know that others are in the same boat :-) I am, apart from the odd thing, a complete computer idiot which makes me feel like a fish out of water a lot of the time. I'll just keep checking the junk and reading everything and keep my fingers crossed. No didn't get that message - are you a Kirkmichael Petrie? To give you an example: Today, 2xKari/3xRobben/1xJanine, Meg and Gavin went in junk mail but not duplicated in inbox. Today, this email from you plus one from Lynda Leslie came into inbox but not into junk. Trouble is I replied to Jennifer Petrie and Stephen Petrie site emails which had come into my junk and they have not appeared so I shall have to be careful how I respond - perhaps only through the inbox ones? This after I actually saved the address coming into junk box. The addresses look identical. So I cannot even report that, by saving the junk address, the problem is solved. If it is my end, I'll see if my son can sort it. Aren't you glad you are back - but at least you are generating interest again and geeing us all up. 3. Hi all I have turned off my spam/junk checker as I was getting too many good emails going into it and I have had the same email since 1997 so I know that the problem isn't either one of those two. This is happening on almost every list that I am on and it didn't start until Rootsweb changed all their email groups. Janine -----Original Message----- From: petrie-scotland-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:petrie-scotland-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Norma Thain Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 6:45 PM To: petrie-scotland@rootsweb.com Subject: [PETRIE-SCOTLAND] Duplicate Mails & Missing Messages from ourMailing List Hello to Heather, Jennifer & Janine and anyone else who may be experiencing duplicate or missing mails from the Petrie Scotland List. I do hope my suggestions will solve these current problems.... but if a problem persists, please contact me direct at norma.thain@balgavies.demon.co.uk and I will try to assist. bibi norma ----- Original Message ----- From: <announce@mail.rootsweb.com> To: <LIST-ANNOUNCE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 12, 2006 12:44 AM Subject: RootsWeb Mailing Lists are being Updated > > Dear RootsWeb mailing list subscriber, > > We are excited to announce that in the coming weeks, the RootsWeb.com > mailing lists will be moving to a new list management system. > > Why? > The new list management system offers updated technology, better spam > control, and more efficient hosting of the lists. > > When? > All the lists won't be updated all at once. 3. Hi Sandy, Incidentally, my late son, Gordon, was always called "Sandy". Barbara (Petrie)Sanborn Maine ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sandra Hachey" <gallerygoil@charter.net> To: <petrie-scotland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 26, 2006 1:17 PM Subject: [PETRIE-SCOTLAND] Greetings from Massachusetts Hello all, I've been receiving the Petrie-Scotland e-mails for several years now and have been interested to read the comments from so many Petries all over the globe. 3. Robert, I've just started doing my family history stuff again after quite some time away from it. I have a feeling that your Alexander Petrie and Barbara Gibson might be part of my research. I will try and drag my stuff out (we have just relocated from Canberra to MacLean and still have stuff in boxes to be unpacked) and get back to you with my information.
