    2. Hi there, I have been watching you for a few years! Trying to gleam a line on my family. I live the Washington State and have been looking into my family history, which only goes back to my grandfather. My father was raised in a children's home from the age of 3 and he knew nothing of his parents. If anyone has a line where I may find some information on the Petrie line coming to the US or Canada I would enjoy being pointed in that direction. GF Petrie must have traveled to the Pacific NW during the settlement of Oregon and Washington at the turn of the century. Same as with my mother's father (Bacon) and she also was raised in this same children's home.... The information I have: BERT PETRIE B 09 Mar 1886 D Dec 1969 GF William James Petrie B May 15 1923 D Mar 22 2005 F William Richard Petrie B Feb 11 1947 ME Sons: William Richard 1969 David Scott 1972 Ryan Allen 1979 Any advice will be welcomed! Thanks, Bill Petrie

    3. My A-Z British road map book came to light in the bottom of a box I was sick of falling over and had decided to unpack! After talking about it on the list this morning and then it turning up this afternoon is a bit scarey. Looking at Fife and in particular Newburgh where I first find the above people, when May was christened (1828) made me wonder if I should broaden my search. My thinking is that they could have come from further north looking for work. I have searched the Newburgh OPR's with no other entries to be found. Following is the marriage entry in the Strathmiglo OPR's Nov 1850 WHYTE - James WHYTE in this parish and May PETRIE Parish of Auchtermuchty duly married. There is no corresponding entry in the Auchtermuchty OPR's that I could find. I just assumed that she and her parents lived there. Maybe that is not right and I should expand my area of search. With the 1841 Census for Auchtermutchty gone to Davey Jone's locker and them not being in the 1851 for either village I assumed (again) that they had died. I know this is all a bit disjointed but I feel like I have been rocked back on my heels. Any thoughts would be helpful at this point in time. Annette

    3. Thank you for your information. Yes, it probably seemed further away then than now. I am probably clutching at straws, but it is the only reference I have seen to a Betty Petrie, but then she may have gone back to her maiden name and as I can't find a marriage I don't know what that was. Well I'll keep hoping for something in the future that will help me. Annette....ps the map was great, I have an A-Z british map book but can't find it since the move!

Hi all The closest I have come to my David PETRIE/PEDDRIE is something I got off the web and did not write down where I got it from, (naughty naughty) I think it may have been off theScottish people site. Anyway it says:- Betty Petrie 12/12/1867. Residing in Montrose or Parish of Craig, Forfar and I wrote down Sherriff Court. Are these places far from Auchtermuchty and surrounds? or Newburgh? Any thoughts from anyone would be helpful. Annette

    3. They're not far apart in today's terms, Annette, but Montrose and Forfar are in the County of Angus (formerly known as "Forfarshire") to the north of the Firth of Tay, whilst Auchtermuchty and Newburgh are in the ancient Kingdom of Fife, south of the River Tay. They are "neighbouring" shires (counties), but are separated by a tidal river, which in those days was not bridged, so families (then) located in one county (e.g. Fife) would not (typically) be found in the other (e.g. Angus); at least not in large numbers (those with peripatetic jobs being the exception- e.g. travelling tradesmen known as "journeymen") I wouldn't rule out a connection between Angus and Fife though- I have just such a couple of connections in my tree. Hope this is helpful rather than just plain confusing- have a look at this map: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=335000&Y=725000&A=Y&Z=9 You'll see Forfar and Montrose marked- Fife is the area to the south of Dundee (shaped a little like a "Scottie" dog's head in profile) with St Andrews, Leven, Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline and Glenrothes marked. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Annette Pringle" <iapring@snoopacowra.com> To: <PETRIE-SCOTLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 02, 2006 12:21 AM Subject: [PETRIE-SCOTLAND] Betty PETRIE > Hi all > > The closest I have come to my David PETRIE/PEDDRIE is something I got off > the web and did not write down where I got it from, (naughty naughty) I > think it may have been off theScottish people site. 3. Hi Heather After much searching of the PAF(!), I finally found him. This is weird - I don't normally do this, but I followed back the line of the "in Laws" of one of my Petrie relations a few weeks ago and Bingo! I got him!!! Bear with me! Helen Campbell Cameron, ( Daughter of Stewart Cameron and Jane Petrie of Milton of Blacklunans) b 29 August 1883 at Milton of Blacklunans died 3 September 1950 at Dalnaglar Farm, Glenshee Married JAMES PETRIE b 2 September 1893 at Auchteralyth, Alyth This James Petrie was the son of James Petrie and Mary Bigg who were married on 12 June 1891 at Mains of Banff, parish of Blairgowrie. His parents were James Petrie and Christina Low, and her parents were William Bigg and Annie Dickson Helen Campbell Cameron was the first cousin of my husband's Grandad, Alexander Petrie which is why I had her on my tree. I have one of the Cameron descendants looking into the Cameron line for me, so I should be able to tell you soon whether James Petrie and Helen Campbell Cameron had any children. It's not much, but I hope it helps! 3. Thanks for that Gavin, there is however another puzzle as neither Robert PETRIE b 1851, or his father William PETRIE b 1821 appear to be on the 1881 census index on CD Rom curious, but i know there are odd spellings etc. Did you see that English National Archives are launching a new web site shortly at www.ancestorsonboard.com this will eventually cover passenger lists 1890 to 1960 outward from England thanks again George N Henderson

    3. Hi Heather, The buildings are the row known as The Cottages, Enochdhu,. These houses now have upstairs on them which is maybe why they are difficult to recognise. As you go into Enochdhu from the Blairgowrie side, you pass the old post office cottage on the right, then there is the bridge which the road goes over. Immediately after the bridge, you turn left and this row of cottages sits on your right hand side. They used to be known simply as The Cottages, Enochdhu, then they were given numbers, eg 1, The cottages, Enochdhu. In recent years, the owners have given the houses names. One of them is called Ardlemount, The Cottages, Enochdhu - this is one in the middle of the row. I remember it because we were going to look at it when it was up for sale, but it was a bit too wee for all our gang! Is your Annie Forbes any relation to our Jane or jean Forbes? Will have to do a bit of investigating! Hope this helps!
