Hello Kathy Many thanks for the further details on your branch of the Petrie's and I find this information very interesting..... as James Petrie & Jean Rattray from Kirkmichael also had a son John Petrie born 1808 and a son James.... he was baptised 06 July 1811.... which would perhaps indicate a late June birth date .......can you check your details for your James as you have him noted as born 1814 which is the same birth year as Charles..... To add to this John, James & Charles had older siblings....namely Alexander, Elizabeth & Betty. Is it possible that James & Charles may have travelled to US in 1831 with their older siblings Alexander & Elizabeth, who were perhaps acting as guardians of their younger brothers and records have muddied to show them now as their parents.....just a thought ?? bibi norma ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathy & Terry Smigun" <ksmigun@hotmail.com> To: <petrie-scotland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 15, 2006 3:08 AM Subject: [PETRIE-SCOTLAND] More info on Ohio Petries > Karen Davis and I are working on the Ohio branch of the Petrie family. > Charles Petrie (born March 1814) married Sarah M Jewett. Karen Davis and I are working on the Ohio branch of the Petrie family. Charles Petrie (born March 1814) married Sarah M Jewett. Charles' parents were Alexander Petrie and Elizabeth (unknown surname). They came into the United States in 1831 but we have been unable to locate any sailing information. Alexander and Elizabeth had three sons: John Petrie, born about 1808 and died in Jasper, Pike Co, OH; Charles Petrie born March 1814 and died in 1902 in Oberlin, Lorain Co, OH; and James Petrie born 22 Jun 1814 and died on 13 Mar 1886 in Jersey City NJ. Son John married Elizabeth Stewart on 18 Dec 1836 in Blairgowrie, and their first son was born there on 26 April 1838 (James Petrie). He states that he came to the US in 1839 but I have been unable to locate him in the 1840 US census. Does anyone have connections to this branch of the Petries? Hello the Kirkimichael Petrie's I have throughly enjoyed reading all your messages through the list recently ..... and was interested to read the undernoted Petrie information detailed on the OHROOTS Mailing List the other day and it gives details of the father Charles Petrie born Scotland March 1814...... in USA since 1831 I did a quick check on the database and find that there is only one Charles Petrie's birth recorded for that date in the IGI's. CHARLES PETRIE baptised19 MARCH 1814 son of JAMES PETRIE & JEAN RATTRAY aka PETTERIE of KIRKMICHAEL Perthshire. Could this be him ? I have only ever found the IGI marriage details for James Petrie & Jean Rattray and the births of their 6 children. Does anyone else have further details for them ? Discovering this birthdate match with the Charles Petrie in Ohio makes me wonder now if perhaps this family emigrated ?

Hi Jennifer, Well this is sounding promising! I don't have any information back before this couple so I am thinking you may have discovered them. In your second line you mention Alexander....was that meant to be Andrew? I am not sure of the occupation of Andrew Sr. but his son who would be my ggrandfather Andrew was a gameskeeper so it could well fit. Looking forward to hearing more! Hi Norma and everyone. The list has just come alive as I am preparing to go overseas on a long holiday, so I have tried not to get involved - at least till I get back home. Norma - I have tried subscribing by the usual means, but I am still getting messages. Please can you remove me from the list. Bye for now Patricia Taggart New Zealand ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to PETRIE-SCOTLAND-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Hello - especially to Jennifer I am not ignoring all your messages . You have been vbery busy - and we shall get in touch when we have had time (!!) to check and do some comparing. It would be great if you can find a link between the 2 Robertson girls who married the Petries. That would link the lines twice!! Hi Karen, Do you know who the parents of you first Andrew were? I have some info on an Andrew Petrie who had children with a Margaret Campbell - but they weren't married at the time. Alexander was a farmer and Margaret was a housekeeper. Am I on the right track here? Unfortunately it is not the Andrew I was hoping it may have been. Our Andrew married a "Campbell" and they had a son Andrew who married Jane Ferguson (also known as Jane Johnston...she was widowed). Alexander was born in 1828 and not 1826 as I've put in the first email - I can't read my own writing! Jennifer ----- Original Message ----- From: Jennifer Petrie<mailto:JenniferPetrie@hotmail.com> To: petrie-scotland@rootsweb.com<mailto:petrie-scotland@rootsweb.com> Sent: 11 October 2006 11:45 Subject: Re: [PETRIE-SCOTLAND] KIRKMICHAEL Petries Hi Karen, I don't have any info on Andrew yet as I have been following the line of Donald. I will check it out though. The info I have on Donald is as follows:- (THIS MIGHT INTEREST BOTH SETS OF KIRKMICHAEL PETRIES) Donald Petrie was born in 1799, the son of Alexander Petrie and Ann Robertson. He died on 12th June 1866 at Tonloid, parish of Kirkmichael. On the 8th May 1825, Donald Petrie married Hellen Petrie, the daughter of John Petrie and Betsy (Betty) Robertson. ( Hellen Petrie - born 1801, died 9 November 1873 at Tonloid, parish of Kirkmichael) So Donald from one set of the Kirkmichael Petries married Hellen from the other set of Kirkmichael Petries. They went on to have 8 children:- David George born 1826 Christian born 1830 Another David born 1832 Anne born 1835 Elizabeth born 1839 Emily (Amelia) born 1843 I have followed some of their lines down a wee bit further - I am still looking into these, so there are still people to find! Alexander Petrie the son of Donald and Hellen Petrie was born in 1826. He originally trained as a flour miller in Caputh, but later moved to Edinburgh where he was employed as a "House Servant" and then as a Butler. On the 10th April 1863 at Stirling, he married Jane Reid, the daughter of Charles Reid and Jane Sinclair. Alexander and Jane had one daughter, Helen Petrie, born in 1864. Alexander died on 21st May 1879 at City Hospital, Edinburgh from smallpox. Helen Petrie, the daughter of Alexander Petrie and Jane Reid, was born on the 25th November 1864 at 6 Daston Place Lane, Edinburgh. She worked firstly in a printing office and then as a domestic servant. On the 27th November 1891, Helen married Andrew Somerville and they went on to have at least 7 children. Helen died on the 22nd June 1919 at 338 Morningside Road, Edinburgh. Children of Helen Petrie and Andrew Somerville:- Neil Somerville - born 23rd July 1894. He married Joan Ross Herriot on 10th March 1921 Alexander Petrie Somerville - born 2 April 1896 . He married Helen Teviotdale on 23 September 1923. ( Alexander died on 1st April 1954 ) Agnes Gilchrist Somerville - born 2 January 1899 died 11 July 1899 Jane Reid Somerville - born 24 June 1900 Andrew Gilchrist Somerville - born 26 December 1903 Helen Petrie Somerville - born 29 March 1905 James Somerville Going way back up the line again to Donald Petrie and Hellen Petrie, I have more information on more of their children - think I have maybe bombarded everyone with enough for now!!!!! Hi George, I thought it might be of interest to you and anyone else who uses the Scotlands People website, that I often use the SOUNDEX feature on the name search to bring in records which may have alternate spellings of PETRIE. It was a great advantage in searching the early Census records as it enabled me to find relatives where various spellngs had been used. Sometimes it's been th only way I've found an elusive relative.
