Hi All Thought you maybe interested in the follow noted on a sister mail list. What I have seen so far is very interesting. > > Dear All This may have been mentioned on the list already but I can't remember seeing it and it's very interesting...the University of Edinburgh have put scanned Statistical Accounts of Scotland on line through their EDINA project. You can search for the county and parish you want and read the whole thing. The address of the EDINA home page is: http://www.edina.ac.uk/index.shtml (any errors in the url will be because I've left my glasses at home today! - apologies in advance - you can also find it through yahoo by searching on 'edina edinburgh university' or something similar). best wishes, Sheila > > Regards Gavin -- Gavin W Petrie 64 Sunnyhills Ave. Glenview Hamilton 2001 New Zealand - - - - - - - - - If you are interested in 'Immigrant Shipping to New Zealand' between 1835 and 1910, pay my web site a visit at:- http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Forest/2925/shipstonz.htm

Hi All Welcome to the New Year. Still looking for information on my g grandfather David Petrie and my grandfather William PETRIE. My g grandfather was David PETRIE, who was born in Edinburgh on 17 Apr 1858 and married Helen FOX in Lumphinnans in 1879. Helen was born on 4 Jan 1857, in Kilmarnock, Ayr. They had 12 children (born in Fifeshire), 4 coming out to New Zealand with Helen on the 'SS Dorset' arriving in Auckland on 6 Apr 1906. The 4 children were Marion age 17, James age 11, Annie age 9 and Robert age 7. At least 2 other children, Janet b. abt 1884 & Frank b. abt 1886, came sometime later. So far I have not been able to established when David or William, his son, came out. I suspect they could have come out together abt 1905, as indicated by 'length of time in NZ' from their Death Certs. I have also been unable to find the birth/christening date of William, my grandfather. All I know is that he was born in Methil, Fifeshire (from marr. cert.) and from age at time of marr. and death, he would have been born abt 1883. I may have to take the plunge and visit the GRO web site. Any offers of help or information appreciated. Hi Terri & Maureen, I came across this marriage certificate for another previously unknown child of your James Petrie & Mary Gordon.... Marriage Certificate Ref: 1860 TILLICOULTRY, Clackmannan Page 4 Entry 7 (source Scottish Records Office) On 16 January 1860 at Tillicoultry Manse (after banns of Church of Scotland) ROBERT PETRIE Carter age 28 of Coalsnaughton Bachelor Parents: JAMES PETRIE - Gardener MARY PETRIE ms GORDON CHRISTIAN SYME Maid Servant age 23 of Coalsnaughton Spinster Parents: DAVID SYME - Carter MARGARET SYME ms RATTRAY Witnesses: JAMES PETRIE PETER DAWSON *********** I have a death certificate for the above Christian Syme in my files, if you are interested in further info for this couple. Norma, For your files, I have located another child to the John McLAREN/Mary Ann PETRIE marriage and some small tidbits of information: Found on the 1881 Census that a kind soul looked up for me via the Angus GenWeb site: Dwelling: 14 N Ersking Street, Dundee, Forfar, Scotland (Name, marital status, age, sex, birthplace) Mary Ann McLAREN W 38 F Broty Ferry, Forfar, Scotland Head, Occ: Jute Weaver **I know she was not a widow as other children were born to this marriage up to 1888 - maybe John was in America at the time of the census. Thomas McLAREN U 15 M Dundee, Forfar, Scotland Son, Occ: Rivetter Robert McLAREN 8 America Son, Occ: Scholar Mary Ann McLAREN 2 F Dundee, Forfar, Scotland Daughter New bits of information: 1) Birthplace for Mary Ann McLAREN ms PETRIE 2) Found Robert! My Aunt remembers an "Uncle Robert" but I could never find him. With him listed as 8 his approximate birth year would be 1873 - interesting that it was in America. That means that they were in America in 1873 for his birth and back in Dundee in October of 1874 for the birth of Martha Beattie. 3) Mary ANN McLAREN, instead of Mary Petrie McLAREN as we knew her. Also, records of birth, death, etc. in Providence list her as Mary P. McLaren. Maybe the census person picked up Mary Ann as that was her mothers name.... Also, we now know she was born in Dundee! 4) My Aunts' and grandmothers' recollection of the family was two boys, Mary, and two other boys. Given this 1881 census all the other children born prior to 1879, besides Thomas and Robert, must have died -- which fits the recollection. ONE OTHER PIECE OF INFORMATION Also in the 1881 census, a Mary Ann PETRIE was found - this could be the wife of William PETRIE, but I don't know how to go about figuring it out. The information: Dwelling: 12 Dishland Street, St Vigeans, Forfar, Scotland Mary Ann PETRIE W 56 F Arbroath, Forfar, Scotland Head, Occ: Pauper Maybe Mary Ann Petrie McLAREN returned to Scotland because her mother was in ill health? The next child born to John and Mary Ann Petrie McLAREN was John in 1883 in Providence. That would give me a narrower window to look for death records for this Mary Ann PETRIE. Do the death records in this time period give spouse's name or children's names so that we can tie them back? Any suggestions as to where I can look next? Hi folks, Some of the gang who are attending the Gathering are still looking for suitable accommodation. So I have started up a News thread in our MyFamily.com Petrie-Scotland Website for accommodation recommendations, queries and website addresses etc I reckon the News section in the Website is probably the best place to discuss this. As all the messages and information will stay available to be read at any time, which will prove useful now and also for anyone planning a trip to Scotland in the future. If those who have already visited Scotland can recommend accommodation they have used.......or similarly if any of our local members can recommend or give opinions on B & B's, Guest Houses or Hotels in Dundee, Angus & surrounds, it would all be very much appreciated. Please do visit our Petrie-Scotland Website soon and add your accommodation queries, recommendations and comments to the News thread..... Many thanks Cheerio Norma
Norma thank you for the marriage information on Agnes PETRIE`s marriage to William Sutherland. I did a search on the I.G.I and found one son for them so far: JAMES LAING SUTHERLAND brn 15th February 1861 St. Nicholas Parish. Also found that James Mitchell Laing married a Jane Reid which is also related to the other witness James Reid. found this marriage; JEAN PETRIE married JAMES REID 17th February 1855 St Nicholas Aberdeen Also found this birth which may help someone else on the list. mother: ELIZABETH PETRIE father: PETER JAMES SUTHERLAND son: JOHN SINCLAIR SUTHERLAND Brn; 8TH DEC 1866 St. Nicholas Aberdeen. Forwarding the following Message to the gang which Russell had sent as an attachment directly to me...... Dear Norma, It is quite a while since I last wrote to you, but I do enjoy reading all of the Petrie queries and answers. I have a couple of queries for you, if you or any of the Petrie clan can help it would be greatly appreciated. James Addison, born at Dunfermline 5th. Dec. 1773 , married Margaret Sharp born 1788, on 26th. May 1809 at Dunfermline. Marriage record states ( of Killibone) is that a suburb of Dunfermline or would it be a Farm ?. They both died in Cleish, Kinross, I have their Burial details. I have not been able to find James parents ???. Daughter, Janet Addison born Killibone 16th. May 1816, married James Laurie in Boreland ???. Son Robert born in Watergate ???. Their son, Mark Stark, my G. Grandfather married Janet Robertson in Glasgow just before they sailed to Australia, it is his diary that I sent to the Tay Valley Family History Society. Their Grandson George Addison married Elsie Watson the daughter of Mary Anne Petrie of Kettle, daughter of Robert Petrie, born 27th. June 1827 and Elizabeth Skinner. Mary Anne Petrie married Tom Watson, born 26th.September 1860 at Forgan, Fife. Can not find marriage of His father John Watson and his Mother Jane Cowenie, or any record of Cowenie as a surname ???. If it is of any help to anyone I have a copy of the Monumental Inscriptions for East and West Fife and Kinross. Also have a copy of the 1880 U.S.A. census and Civil War lists. Let me know if you want me to look anything up for you. Hope to see you all in Dundee in August, not long to go now!. I bet that wind is blowing cold now Norma, we were expecting 43 deg. C. 110 F.) yesterday, would have been a record, thankfully it did not eventuate only 36 deg. C. (97 F). All the best, Russell Addison. [email protected]
What else can I say except congratulations to you both well done and welcome to the newest Petrie's. Annette in Dubbo NSW

Hi Bruce, I'll be delighted to check these out for you....Sarah should be easily found so long as she died in Scotland.....Jessie may be more difficult, since I do not yet have a date of birth for her, and it is a popular name amongst the Petrie's.... At present attendance numbers are limited to 75 although I may be able to negotiate more ??..... tickets will be sent to those wishing to attend, there is no charge for this event. PETRIE GATHERING - Marryat Hall, Dundee Saturday 11 August 2001..... 10 am - 12 Noon (setting up & blether time) 12 noon - 4.30 pm (Petrie public joining us...) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Gathering will be an excellent opportunity for us all to display our Petrie Family Tree's, Family Pictures, and any other items and memorabilia, which might be of interest or use. Tables will be available for you to display your Petrie stuff...... We will have from 10 am till 12 noon to spend time together and set up our displays. Our Petrie Gathering at the Marryat Hall, Dundee will be advertised through various media..... once word gets around, we can expect to be joined on the day by any number of Petrie descendants from the local area and from other counties in Scotland. We will open our doors to the Petrie public from 12 noon - 4.30 pm...... I expect some will know their family history and will be looking for connections through our displays, others will perhaps not know much of their family history......but will be curious to find out more. We can distribute a Petrie info sheet to the visiting public to allow them to note their known Petrie connections, along with their name and address, and they can hand these in at the Gathering and have a quick look up done on the database or can send it on later......this will also allow us to follow up any Petrie connections that may be discovered after the event. To this end I will have 2 PC's with my full Petrie database available for information and look ups, and I will also bring along hard copies of all Petrie birth, marriage & death certificate transcriptions that I have in my files to date. If you are not attending the Gathering but wish to send on information to be displayed on your behalf, this can be sent to me by post. (Copies only please, as we don't want to be responsible for original documents !! :o) I expect we will be in need of a volunteer or two, to set-up and attend to these on the day, if anyone is willing please let me know. Hazel has also very kindly offered to organise the Ceilidh, and will give us further details as soon as she can. I expect they will be available either as coupons or for sale at the Tourist Board display stand.... but only if you want them.....we are under no obligation to purchase !! SCOTTISH RECORDS OFFICE - Edinburgh. ACCOMMODATION ------------------------- The Dundee & Angus Tourist Board have offered us free assistance for anyone looking for accommodation in the area. You can contact them via their website at http://www.angusanddundee.co.uk/intro.htm Alternatively, if you are planning on finding accommodation elsewhere in Scotland, checkout the Scottish Tourist Boards website at http://www.visitscotland.com/ *********** NAME BADGES ---------------------- Will be absolutely necessary to help us all recognise each other, these will be sent with your Civic Reception Tickets, or alternatively made available for you when you attend the Gathering...... *********** Sincere thanks go to everyone who has already offered assistance and suggestions for the Gathering, they are all very much appreciated, and if you can think of anything else which might be useful ...do get in touch. This will be vital to help calculate the number of folks intending to participate in each event. Cheerio the noo Norma
Hello All ...My name is Terry Petrie and have been a member of this list for sometime but have remained mostly in the lurk mode. I live in Warner Robins, Ga., USA., and have been tracing my Petrie ancestors for a couple of years now.. I have found the name changed over a period of time, with the name Peatross back in the 16 and 1700s and then to Petry/Pettrey/Petrie, depending on who was doing the census/research at the time. Has anyone found the Peatross connection during their search for Petrie ancestors? Would like to find where they originated from. Norma, I tried to send you a email at virgin.net but it was returned. Warmest Regards Terry Petrie
