    1. [Petrie-Scotland] PETRIE/REID CONNECTIONS
    2. Hazel Harris Garside
    3. Hi Norma, Hope you have the wine handy! Children of Alexander REID and Annie PETRIE are listed on the Scottish Church Records disc as follows:- - John REID c. 10 JUN 1791 Kirkmichael - Robert REID c. 24 FEB 1793 Kirkmichael - James REID c. 13 MAR 1795 Kirkmichael - Janet REID c. 21 APR 1798 Kirkmichael - Alexander REID c. 15 JUN 1800 Kirkmichael - William REID c. 25 OCT 1803 Kirkmichael I looked for possible birth/christening records in Perthshire for Alexander & Annie and came up with - Alexander REID c. 14 MAY 1769 Kirkmichael, f. Alexander REID m. Jannet MORISON Alexander REID c. 27 MAR 1768 Rattray, f. James REID m. Hellen SANDERS Alexander REID c. 26 APR 1767 Kirkmichael, f. Patrick REID m. Margaret C. Alexander REID c. 18 MAY 1761 Kirkmichael, f. James REID m. Janet STEWART and the only possible Annie Anne PETRIE c. 13 MAY 1761 Kirkmichael, f. John PETRIE m. Elisabeth REID!!!!!!! So, if Alexander c. 18 MAY 1761 married Anne c. 13 MAY 1761 they would both be 28 years old when they married. This seems to tie in with other marriage ages (mid to late twenties). Now, in reply to your query about John PETRIE (spouse Betty ROBERTSON) and Annie PETRIE (spouse Alexander REID) possibly being brother and sister, I found the following children of John PETRIE & Elisabeth REID - - Anne PETRIE c. 13 MAY 1761 Kirkmichael * - John PETRIE c. 2 JAN 1765 Kirkmichael * - Robertus c. 12 FEB 1767 Kirkmichael - Jannet c. 14FEB 1770 Kirkmichael Looks like I may have another brother and sister in the line! Hope that's all clearer than mud. Now something else to confuse you. If Alexander's parents were James REID and Janet STEWART that would mean that my 5th great grandmother on my grandfather's mother's side was a STEWART, well........... my 5th great grandfather on my granfather's father's side was also a STEWART (AAAAAAAGH! NOT ANOTHER TWO!) I can feel the hair growing on the palms of my hands as I type (my father used to tell me that was the first sign of madness). I think I'll give up genealogy for a while, my head can't cope, and I still don't know where Heather and Karen's Alexander fits it. Byeeeeee, Hazel :o)

MacALPIN JAMES JOPP ************* We have been unable to find evidence to prove that William Petrie (spouse Margaret Stark) was son of your William Petrie & Helen Shepherd, However from the gravestone inscription in Newmonthill, Forfar we know that 2 of John Petrie & Jane Beattie's children are buried with your William Petrie & Helen Shepherd, which would infer a family connection.... Details from the other certificates of William Petrie (spouse Margaret Stark) children...note that William Petrie was a Baker in Forfar and then in London, England and the discovery of the above previously unknown daughter AGNES and her birth details, would appear to confirm this further.... Hope it's of interest.... Cheerio Norma

    2. Norma Thain
    3. Hi Hazel, Many thanks for this new information which brings yet another Petrie connection into your family !! :o) ....I had a look on the database and to date all I have on ANNIE PETRIE & ALEXANDER REID at the moment is their marriage date from IGI......15 August 1789 @ Kirkmichael, Perth. Cannot get onto the on-line IGI to get a list of their known children ....do you have them ?? Although I do find I have death details for one of their sons.... Death Cert Ref: 1864 KIRKMICHAEL (page3 entry 7) JOHN REID married to BETSY MORRISON Farmer of Croftmire, Kirkmichael died 19 APRIL 1864 age 73 YEARS parents ANNE PETRIE/ALEXANDER REID Died at 3.45 pm of Disease of Bladder (some years) his death was registered by his son Alexander Reid ********** >From info we have already found, the above John Reid was brother to Alexander Reid (spouse Ann McDonald) and Uncle to John Reid who married your Elisabeth Petrie in 1860, (whose respective sister & brother George Petrie & Margaret Reid had also married in 1858....) and since John & Elisabeth's marriage certificate stated they were 2nd cousins (as were then George & Margaret !!) Does this then suggest (if the 2nd cousin connection was through the Petrie line) that their grandparents John Petrie (spouse Betty Robertson) and Annie Petrie (spouse Alexander Reid) ...were brother & sister ?? Or am I barking up the wrong "tree" altogether ?? :o) Phew !! It took two large glasses of wine to work that out !!! :o) Can you tell ?? :o) You'll have to persuade your cousin from Alyth to come join us.... out of curiosity I had a quick look in the database for Petrie/Long connections, and find the only one I know of at the moment in this area.....is from my own Petrie tree !! :o) I have William Petrie married Agnes Burgess Long in 1936.. 3. Hi Norma and Heather (Richardson) I've managed to go another generation back with my family tree which may link me in to other people by another name as well as PETRIE. Already had Alexander REID m. Annie MCDONALD 20 NOV 1825 and now have their parents - Alexander REID and Annie PETRIE (does anyone have any further info on this Annie?), James MCDONALD and Marjery MCINTOSH. Heather, do you have a note of the parents of your Thomas MCDONALD, he could be Annie's brother? I see Caroline also has MCINTOSH in her line. I'm getting more and more confused! Bye for now, Hazel P.S. I'd love to get my cousin from Alyth to subscribe to the list, it would really baffle her. Her PETRIE line is the same as mine, but she married a local MCDONALD (I've yet to check for connections, really looking forward to finding some so I can wind them up) and her maiden name is LONG which also has PETRIE connections!

    3. Hello all Petrie listmembers. My aunt and I are presently researching our family tree. My great-great-grandmother, Catherine Petrie, born abt 1850 to George Petrie and Elizabeth Campbell. They were all born in Wick, Caithness Scotland. Catherine married Andrew Moyes/Moise in Ketlle, Fife, Scotland. I have not found any siblings of Catherine, or dates for her parents. This is all the Petrie information i have at the moment, hoping to find some connections to other descendants of George and Elizabeth. I'm also wondering if there is an archive of previously posted messages. Best of luck to all Stephanie D'Avolio (nee Miles)

    2. Allan Jones
    3. Hi Brian I have a copy of The Phillimore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers which contains the pre-1832 parish maps for England, Scotland and Wales. The map for County Aberdeen shows the parish of Old Machar at the very bottom right hand corner of the County. The southern boundary of the parish seems to have followed the River Dee so according to my reckoning, Old Machar ran along the northern bank of the Dee for 3-4 miles and northwards up the coast for another 4 miles. It bulges inland a little at the top lefthand side to join the parish of New Machar. It's difficult to align these old maps with a current road atlas of the area but a rough guide of the boundaries (according to Allan !) could be the following present day locations. Bottom RH - mouth of the Dee Bottom LH - Town/village of Peterculter Top LH - Town/village of Newmachar Top RH - Town/village of Belhelvie I don't have a book copier but am about to buy a scanner so will be able to send you a copy shortly. 2. Norma Thain
    3. Hello Pam, Many thanks for this additional information, your 1881 census details for the McLAREN family certainly seem to have helped you find new info. With regard to the MARY ANN PETRIE who you found in the 1881 census at Arbroath, through her address and age I believe this may be MARY ANN SMALL widow of WILLIAM PETRIE from Arbroath, they married in 1851...although I need to find further info to prove for sure that this is her. We know from details on your Mary Ann Petrie's marriage certificate to John McLaren in 1864 that her father WILLIAM PETRIE was deceased and her mother MARY ANN FERGUSON was apparently still alive. I checked back my wee note book for my SRO visits and find that I have tried a search for you using the surname cross reference facility for married women for a Petrie/Ferguson death in Scotland through from 1855 till 1930... with no death found. This may indicate that she has died outside Scotland or she has re-married and her Petrie marriage has not been recorded on her death certificate, so does not show up in the index. Since you know the McLaren family returned to America, could her Mother have gone with them ?? E.T. Pearce was the Registrar. If anyone has any information, I would appreciate your comments. James Petrie Aldergrove B.C. Canada.

    1. [Petrie-Scotland] starting the search
    2. Trevor Cameron
    3. Hello All My name is Trevor Petrie and I have just started a search for family history and came across the Petrie's list. I am very grateful to Norma Thain for the opportunity to share some information and hopefully glean some for my own use. :0) As I am working back from my own birth this the very basic information that I have at the moment so it will appear sketchy in the extreme. I am eldest son of Andrew Cameron Petrie and Elizabeth Murray Hynd Petrie nee Webster. They were married in Dunfermline 0n 15th June 1957. My father was born 11th November 1934 in Cowdenbeath,Fife, youngest son of Johnathan Petrie and Helen Petrie nee Cameron. He had a brother, Frank (Frances) who became an electrician in Kelty, two sisters, Reta who emigrated to Australia, married and settled in Melbourne(?) and Anna who married a plumber, Jim Grieg and lived in North Queensferry until his death but is currently in Rosyth. The family used to live at 146 Moss side Road in Cowdenbeath. Johnathan died in the mid 1970s but during his life he had been a variety of jobs. As colourful local character, he was known as 'Chum' Petrie, was fond of his beer and he used to do the laundry for the Cowdenbeath football club, drying the kit in the ovens of the bakery he worked in, Helen had been in service during her early years and died in mid 1990s. I have a number of photographs which have been supplied but dates are lacking in a number of cases. However if anyone can use the information I am supplying please do so and I would appreciate any background links with this as well. Just for the record Andrew and Betty Petrie are living in Zimbabwe now having managed to get all offspring to leave home at last! I am trying to get a copy of my grandparents marriage certificate and othere related details and hopefully this should help further down the line? I would also appreciate any hints as I am a new boy at this sort of thing. Thank you Trevor Cameron Petrie _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
