His mother would probably have been either May or Helen - each unmarried in 1881. You will need to get proof of this, such as a birth certificate. This MAY show the father's name. The chances are that - as the "P" stood for "Petrie", this would be the father's surname. Norma may have some details of him on her database, if you can name him! Good luck! Hello I am the decendent of Charles Petrie Powrie. I have just started to get involved with this and have not got a lot of information so if anyone would like to e - mail me some info feel free. I am presently looking for the parents of Charles Petrie Powrie
Hello Norma I have been going through some 1841 Census records, provided by another Fife, Scot. list. As you know William WHYTE married Margaret PETRIE in Collessie 1856. The 1841 census for Auchtermuchty shows there is a Margaret PETRIE servant, um, 20, Collessie and Helen PETRIE servant, um, 18, Collessie. Both are working for a David BLYTH m,35, farmer of 245 acres em 1 lab, Falkland and his wife Elisabeth BLYTH m 29, Kilspendie, Perth. According to my records Margaret was born c1829 and Helen c1832. Do you think that these girls are the same ones? Annette in Dubbo - still looking for David and Janet PETRIE

Hi Denis, Great to hear from you, I was very interested to read of your 1881 census find showing Ann L. McKay at same address as the two Petrie boys...... did it mention Ann McKay's relationship to the family if they were at the same address ?? They were the twin sons of Alexander Petrie & Barbara Matthew, namely George Ford Petrie & John Moir Petrie b. 10 March 1874 and both boys graduated from Aberdeen University with an M.B. Ch.B in 1898, George went on to take up a post in Elstrie, Herts, England and John with Thornton Health Board, in Surrey & Birmingham, England...... but no further information on them. I'm not sure where Lochland Street is in regard to Lochshade, perhaps one of our listers from Arbroath can help us with that. With regard to your Thomas Petrie's parents.... I appreciate we still have a big question mark over his parents....despite having his death certificate which was registered by his son in law ..... Death Certificate Ref: 1878 ARBROATH Page 1 Entry 1 (source Scottish Records Office) THOMAS PETRIE - Wood Merchant married to 1. ANN HUTCHEON 2. JANE CAMPBELL died 31 December 1877 at 2.30 pm at 10 Church Street, Arbroath Age 80 years Parents: JAMES PETRIE - Lint Millar (sp?) in Kinnell - deceased MARJORY PETRIE ms WILLIAMSON - deceased Cause of Death: Apoplexy (7 days) Death registered by WILLIAM MARTIN, Son-in -Law Engine Fitter of 33 East Abbey Street, Arbroath on 02 January 1878 @ Arbroath ************* I am still more inclined towards the son-in-law having wrongly noted the father as James Petrie instead of David Petrie, and making a bad guess on his age. So it does leave it all open to question !! We know David Petrie & Marjory Williamson had a son Thomas born 12 October 1802 at Kinnell Did you ever find Thomas with his 2nd wife Jean Campbell in the 1851 census ?? This would help confirm his age & birthplace. I know we found him in the 1841 census but of course the ages were rounded up/down then to the nearest 5 years, and no specific birthplace other than"of this county" is noted in 1841 census. So not much use for us at this time.... Sorry but I have nothing at the moment to support your theory of him being son of James Petrie & Martha Rennet (poss aka Matti Bennet & Mathulda Bennet) as I do not have a record of a son named Thomas for them (although records could be missing !!) ...have you found one ?? But if we are prepared to accept that Martha Rennet & Matti Bennet & Mathulda Bennet are all one and the same person due to spelling or transcription errors in her name from IGI & OPR. I find that, although their is no marriage date for them, their children were born between 1764 & 1780 in Kinnell...and if your Thomas was born anytime between 1798 -1802... I reckon we would be pushing it anyway with her likely age...to make her Thomas's mother. Delighted to hear you have found a match for your David Petrie b c1826 in Nigg, Kincardine..did it state he was born Marykirk ?? Sorry to hear you cannot make it to the Gathering, not to worry, you'll be having your own family celebration with the wedding !!! :o) Cheerio the noo Norma ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 18, 2001 9:08 AM Subject: [Petrie-Scotland] Returning > Hi All > It has been quite sometime since I have sent anything to the list > > Norma > do you remember last year the Charles/David Petrie and Annie McKay > discussion?? > I was reading an old post of yours where you had looked up the birth of > David Petrie Mckay and the mother was Ann McKay of Lochland Street > Arbroath. > > Playing around in the 1881 census I have found on page 2 of gro ref 272/30 > > Dwelling: Lochshade Arbroath > Annie L Mackay age 4 born Arbroath > > On page 1 same address > > John M Petrie/George F Petrie both age 7 born Arbroath > > This would have put them age 24 and her age 21 in 1898, I think I know where > I would put my money on who was the father of David Petrie Mckay if this > is the same people. Hi gang Can anyone tell me the difference in time from Ontario to Dundee? Janine
Hi All It has been quite sometime since I have sent anything to the list Norma do you remember last year the Charles/David Petrie and Annie McKay discussion?? I was reading an old post of yours where you had looked up the birth of David Petrie Mckay and the mother was Ann McKay of Lochland Street Arbroath. Playing around in the 1881 census I have found on page 2 of gro ref 272/30 Dwelling: Lochshade Arbroath Annie L Mackay age 4 born Arbroath On page 1 same address John M Petrie/George F Petrie both age 7 born Arbroath This would have put them age 24 and her age 21 in 1898, I think I know where I would put my money on who was the father of David Petrie Mckay if this is the same people. Where is Lochland Street in regard to Lochshade?? In regard to my own research, I have been searching the 1851 census for my David Petrie, son of Thomas and Ann born 1826. I think I have found him in Nigg, staying in the house of Kenneth Watt, age 23, visitor and noted as a clerk. I have allways suspected that he could at least read and write because of his life in Tasmania. Hotel keeper, store keeper and gold mine owner. I have been spending a lot of time delving into his life there. Also one of his sons who was my grandfather. Norma, you found the parents of Thomas to be David and Marjory (Williamson) in Kinnell. Playing with the IGI, I suspect his parents to be James and Martha (Matti) Rennet (Bennet), would you have any information to support this? My trip to Scotland has been dashed by my youngest son deciding to get married in October. I have reminded him of priorities but he has too many allies. Thats all for now. I have managed to get a weeks leave so hope to get stuck into it and sort out this mountain a paper in my den. If the weather stays the same, overcast with showers for the last two weeks I should be able to get something done, I think the sun came out for about five minutes today. Hello everyone - I guess you are looking forward to the "get together" in August, I have my fingers crossed that I win the Lotto and then I would shout everyone on the list to go. I am at present waiting for the Auchtermuchty OPR's film to arrive and hopefully I may find out something more on my PETRIE connections. When finished I will post anything I get to the list. Annette in Dubbo NSW
I have recently joined the list, made my first post, received lots of great email, found a second cousin. Thanks to everyone on all their input. Colleen wanted to know where I was from. I live just outside of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Because the Petrie information we have is limited, we only have 1 daughter, she married, and that is it for the Petries. (Catherine Petrie, b 1850 Wick, Scotland) parents George Petrie and Elizabeth Campbell Russell, thanks for the messages. Catherine and Andrew Moyes actually had 9 children, including my great grandmother Annie Petrie Moyes. I would still like to go about finding dates for my George Petrie and Elizabeth Campell. On Catherine Petrie's marriage certificate it lists Wick as her birthplace. I am very happy with this list, and still can't believe that a cousin and I have connected. Thanks very much, Stephanie D'Avolio
Hi Norma and Everyone, I would like to repost my Petrie interests thus far and to wish everyone who is going to attend the Petrie Gathering a great time. Unfortunately I cannot make it, but you will be in my thoughts over that time. My Great grandmother was Crichton Petrie. I seem to remember my mother telling me that her grandmothers real name was Mary, although on Crichton's Marriage and Death Certificate and on the Birth and Marriage Certificate of her son she always used the name Crichton. From the details on the Death Certificate, Crichton would have been born in Perthshire, Scotland in 1837/8. She immigrated to New Zealand in 1857 and married John Henry Garmonsway in the home of the Reverend David Bruce, Church Of Scotland, in Auckland. Crichtons parents were Crichton Blair and James Petrie ( Stonemason). I was told that Crichton had twins, a son James and a daughter Crichton born 6 July 1870. On checking this information out I found that it was not correct and that James was born in 1868 and Crichton was incorrect. The name of the female child born on 6 July 1870 was Christiana Augusta Garmonsway, she was the daughter of John Henry Garmonsway and Crichton Petrie. The name of the other children that Crichton and John Henry had were, Letitia, John Henry ( my grandfather), Edward Alexander, Charles Thomas, Helen Blair and Frances Henry. Crichton died of Uterine Cancer on 14 August 1885 at Morningside, Auckland, New Zealand. So far I have been unable to locate her on any passengers lists. Thats all folks. Norma, do you want me to send you copies of Crichton's certificates to put up on your board at the gathering. It looks like I too am one of your orphans. Thanks everyone Keep Smiling and Keep the skeletons rattling in the cupboard Jill Van Der Reyden http://www.geocities.com/la_zouche
