Bill, Thanks for your message which I have followed up. I have logged an enquiry to see what material is available for the area I am interested in. There is a lot more stuff there! Jim, Isle of Wight.
Hi all, Can anybody help? Where are surviving kirk session records from the 18th Century to be found and are they available to the likes of us to refer to? I am, of course, interested in Church of Scotland records from the Angus area. Jim Petrie, Isle of Wight.
Hi Jim, Here's the web site for the National Archives of Scotland http://www.nas.gov.uk/ Bill
Hi Jim, I found the following; The Kirk Session of a parish consists of the minister of the parish and the elders of the congregation. It looks after the general wellbeing of the congregation and, particularly in centuries past, parochial discipline. Most Kirk Session records are held in the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh and can be fascinating. For more information on this see Anne Gordon's Candie for the Foundling published by the Pentland Press in 1992. ISBN 1 872795 75 7 (720 pages). Bill
Hi to all, Can anyone tell me the address of the repository in London where I can find "Births & Deaths at sea"? I am looking for the death of a child of James Birrell & Helen Petrie for June Gale who does not have email. It is possible this child could have died aboard the steamer "Royal Adelaide" between Leith & Portsmouth between Jan & April, 1840. June has offered to take photos of houses, churches, other buildings or memorials in Sydney if anyone has a request. Many thanks Colleen from beautiful Qld
Hello Stephen.... and thanks for your helpful observations, yes, I think I had forgotten to join those two words together. I'm off to the Library to get some books on the history of the settlers there................ also Bill, thankyou for the new web site, that will be great to check out. Gillian. ChCh, NZ
Hi Colleen, Try http://home.vicnet.net.au/~dpsoc/linksoz.htm#shipping this site is loaded with information. Bill from cold and snowy Maine, U.S.A.
Hello there Bill, Many thanks for the correct site.. I must have been having a very dumb day! You are right, the site is excellent and I am underway. Now to see if I can find John Reid and connect him back to those Petries! Many thanks . Gillian. ChCh, New Zealand.

Hi John sorry I didn't get back to you on Thursday but ending up working for a few hours that night. Did you read Norma's email. She had send me the same info some time ago on Archibald and Jane's marriage. John Petrie was the son of John & Isabella Linay. Their 3 children that I know of were Janet, Feb. 16, 1782, John, Aug. 31, 1783 & Peter, Dec. 1, 1788. John & Isabella were married apr. 6, 1781 John Petrie & Jessie Foubister were married Jan. 9, 1812 and their children were John, Aug. 14, 1814, Peter, Feb. 12, 1815, Euphinia, May 30, 1818, David, Jul. 19, 1820, James, Dec. 25, 1822, Janet, Jun 2, 1825, & Archibald, May 16, 1828. In 1821 they lived at St. Andrews, Milldam. John was 6, Peter - 5, Euphinia - 3 and David - 1. -----Original Message----- From: John Shearer [SMTP:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, February 28, 2001 4:46 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Petrie-Scotland] Petrie-Shearer Family of Holm and Paplay Hi Janine, My Archibald Petrie was married to Jane Shearer on 6 May 1858 in Holm and Paplay. Please confirm that we are talking about the same Archibald Petrie. I had convinced myself that Jane's Archibald was the one christened in Holm and Paplay on 14 January 1838. But that was on the basis of some similarity in names between Jane's children and the Holm and Paplay Archibald's siblings. I may have that one wrong! Please do pass along the additional information. Hello to the Clan Gatherers I thought I'd better put a few bits of information up about the Ceilidh. It's difficult to estimate the cost without numbers and I've still to get full information from the caterer but it certainly won't be any more than £10 per head and hopefully less than that. The barn can accommodate 100 to 120 people, so we will have to restrict the number of tickets. First come, first served! It will start at 7pm, finishing at midnight (I'm sure most people will be ready to collapse by that time after the gathering in Dundee) and we plan to have a spit roast buffet supper (vegetarians will be catered for, so please let us know when you book). I had asked Geordie McGibbon, a farmer from Alyth, to play at the Ceilidh with his band but unfortunately he will be playing at the pipe band world championships in Glasgow that day and wouldn't get back in time. The pipe band won second place last year so let's keep our fingers crossed they make it to first this year. HOWEVER, the other two members of his Ceilidh band are still very keen to play as one of them is Fiona Ritchie, descended from the KIRKMICHAEL PETRIES! I'll try to get more info out of the caterer in the next few weeks (it's like trying to organise something in Spain, nothing happens too quickly in Blairgowrie. Have I been living in the city too long?) and post again soon. Hazel Edinburgh P.S. August is the time for all the local Highland Games so check out with the Tourist Board for dates if you're interested. I think Blairgowrie Highland Games is the first weekend in September so it's a bit later and the star attraction is said to be the "Massed Pipes and Drums" from Canada. The Aberfeldy Highland Games is on the day of the Gathering and Ceilidh, 11 August, I know this because the caterer said he will be working there during the day, let's hope HE makes it back in time!:o)

Hello all, We have just found connecting info for a William Petrie, b. 1816 who m. Mary Ann Miller on 13 May, 1844 at Edinburgh, to our George Septimus Petrie. They are sons of James Petrie and Rachel Shields, who m. 8 Dec, 1804 at Dysart. Are there any researchers that are connected to William and Mary Ann Miller? William was a watchmaker and jeweller in 1844-54 at Burntisland and later at 108 High Street Kirkcaldy, and died on 23 Jul,1854. Mary Ann continued the business until 1866. I would like to make contact to verify and exchange details. Regards, Trissia & Bill Waddingham, Sydney, Australia ([email protected])
