I am new to this group and am tracing the Petrie's who emigrated to Co Mayo/Sligo from Scotland. If anybody has any connection I would be pleased to here from them Mike Wooldridge, Norwich,UK Petrie,Cunningham,Hepworth,Carroll,Grier,MaCavock,Bruce,Higgins,Macdonald,Frazer,
Stephen, I noticed that the "head" of your family tree was an Alexander Petrie, born/baptised 1761. I am researching Alexanders born around this time, to find my ancestor, and trying to eliminate others where possible. Can you please supply details of your Alexander so that I can identify him and eliminate him from my search. Place of birth and any other details would be helpful. Most impressive family tree - makes me realise just what a beginner I am! Jim Petrie, Isle of Wight
Greetings to you Ian, Thanks for the information on Elizabeth CAMPBELL born/baptized 22 August 1830 in Edinburgh, daughter of Alexander & Mary Ann SKINNER. Since I have not found any information on the parents of my great grandmother, Catherine PETRIE, George PETRIE and Elizabeth CAMPBELL, and since this Elizabeth CAMPBELL would be the correct age to have Catherine in 1850, it's worth investigating! Catherine PETRIE is listed on the 1861 census of Wick as born in Wick, Caithnesshire, and all the family stories have her born in Wick. Possibly all of this is in error and she may have been born in Edinburgh and taken to Wick as a child. That may be why I can't find her in the 1851 census for Wick!!!! I'm sure that the name Elizabeth CAMPBELL is a very common one, but it's worth trying to delve into the possibilities, since I've run into a dead end with everything else I've tried! Thanks again, George Weston Suisun, CA USA
Hi Marilyn, I'm not sure I can be of much help to you, but I'll give you all the information that I have. Also, you'll note that I've copied both the PETRIE-Scotland mailing list and the Caithness mailing list on my emails! The information on Isabella PETRIE and her marriage to Alexander LANARCH comes from Norma Thain, the person who is the coordinator (list manager)of the PETRIE-Scotland list....but more than that she is a very kind lady who never seems to forget that we're out there searching and she is kind enough to send a message to any of us if she comes across information that is of interest! Recently she sent the following information: Hi Julie & George, Found this certificate for a previously unknown daughter of Donald Petrie & Jane Dallas...... Marriage Certificate Ref: 1861 St. Andrews, EDINBURGH Page 19 Entry 38 (source Scottish Records Office) On 1st February 1861 at 15 Elder Street, Edinburgh (after banns of Free Church of Scotland) ALEXANDER LARNACH Waiter Bachelor age 25 of 15 Elder Street, Edinburgh Parents: ALEXANDER LARNACH - Hotel Keeper - deceased ELIZABETH LARNACH ms GRAY ISABELLA PETRIE Domestic Servant Spinster age 24 of 15 Elder Street, Edinburgh Parents: DONALD PETRIE - Farmer JANE PETRIE ms DALLAS Witnesses: JAMES BERRY CICILIA CORMACK ********** Cheerio Norma That's the information that I have concerning your family and Isabella PETRIE, Marilyn. Some time back Norma was able to find a George PETRIE (the oldest brother of Isabella PETRIE) on the death certificate of his mother, Jane DALLAS who died in Wick in 1855. Because of the detail on the 1855 death certificate she found that the children were all listed, the oldest, George born in Glasgow about 1817 and the youngest Isabella, born in Wick about 1835. I'm still not sure if this George PETRIE is the father of my great grandmother Catherine PETRIE, and if I'm part of the DALLAS line. You would think that I would have found Catherine on the 1851 census for Wick, but so far I haven't had any luck. I have found Catherine on the 1861 census for Wick, where she's listed as servant to the BREMNER family (cowherd) at 12 years of age! I keep hoping that I'll come across her in the 1851 census but so far there's been no luck! If you want what I have on the Dallas family after you've determined if this is your Isabella PETRIE, please let me know! George Weston Suisun, CA USA

Hello Norma and Julie, Thanks for this information on the marriage of Isabella PETRIE to Alexander LANARCH in Edinburgh, on Feb 1, 1861. I'm still trying to determine if the oldest son of Donald PETRIE and Jane DALLAS, one George PETRIE, is the father of my Great Grandmother Catherine PETRIE. Try as I might I cannot connect the two Georges with any certainty! As you may recall, the only information I have about Catherine's parents is from her marriage certificate, where her parents are listed as George PETRIE, deceased Blacksmith and Elizabeth CAMPBELL also deceased at the time of her wedding in 1872. I also have Catherine listed in the 1861 census as a cowherd (servant) on the BREMNER farm in Wick as a 12 year old. Somewhere in Wick, she must be listed on the 1851 census along with her parents, but I have not come across such a listing. It is interesting that Isabella PETRIE is listed on Jane DALLAS' death certificate as having been born about 1835....it appears that her actual birth was probably in 1836 or 1837. She was the youngest child of Donald PETRIE and Jane DALLAS . This family certainly seems to have travelled quite a bit.....Donald PETRIE apparently travelled to Glasgow from Wick to marry Jane DALLAS...they moved to Wick after their second child was born......Catherine, their grandaughter (possibly) moved from Wick to Glasgow to marry Andrew MOYES....it's no wonder they're so hard to trace!! Hi Janine Before booking your flight from Canada, check out air transat (http://www.airtransat.com/) and Canada 3000 (http://www.canada3000.com/), my husband and I flew air transat Glasgow-Calgary and return Vancouver-Glasgow, direct flight for £ 260.- each, last winter. Being a charter line it was a bit restricted as to which days to fly, but as it happened their days suited us fine. It was a lot cheaper than any of the other fares we were offered. There are regular trains to Dundee, if you are interested then the address for the Railtrack Travel Timetable is as follows: http://212.87.65.227/bin.query.exe/en Dundee-Glasgow: direct train is 1 hour 20min Dundee-Edinburgh: 1 hour 12min Dundee-Aberdeen: 1 hour 10min Kari _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Hi everyone I thought it would be a good idea to have more family trees posted to the web-site before the reunion (my own included), so we can have a better understanding of where everyone's connections are before we get to Dundee for the open day. What do you think? Hazel Edinburgh
Hi gang Has anyone booked their flight from Canada yet for the reunion. Janine
George, It was a request from Stephanie, Toronto. I have the Graveyard inscriptions for East & West Fife & Kinross, so I can find other information that is not on Familysearch.org. Coleen lives in Qld. Good Luck, Russ. Addison.
Hi to all I thought you might enjoy the following from an Ipswich (Qld) Journal CRIMINAL JURISDICTION 1854 "John Martin, alias Henry Shelly, was indicted for obtaining the sum of one shilling from Andrew PETRIE, by false pretences, at Brisbane, in January last. The prisioner called upon Mr Petrie and said that his son Mr John Petrie had engaged him as a stonemason and had sent him the sum of five shillings on account of wages. The prosecutor gave him one shilling and he went away, but it was afterwards ascertained that Mr John Petrie had given him no authority of the kind, neither had he entered into Mr Petrie's service. The facts were proved by the evidence of Mr Andrew Petrie, Mr John Petrie and Master George Petrie, and the jury found the prisioner guilty. His Honour, in passing sentence, remarked upon the talent for cheating shown by the prisoner and directed that he should be kept at hard labour in Darlinghurst Gaol for two years". Can anyone tell me if R/BASTENSNEUK the name of a place or thing in Scotland? Thanks Colleen from BEAUTIFUL (this week) Qld
