Hi gang, The following Petrie Gravestone Inscriptions were kindly recorded recently by Murray & Clare Nicoll, sincere thanks to them for taking the time to transcribe & photograph them . ******* Norma, Clare and I had a day out in the southeast part of Kincardine. We visited 8 graveyards out of 15 that are there. We will do the remainder on another day before the 11 August. This where my PETRIE line came from. The further northwards we went towards Stonehaven, the less and less PETRIE stones we found, therefor I am thinking of keeping this search about the southern end of the county and the northern end of Angus. The graveyards still to be done are New Dosk, Fettercairn Old, Fettercairn New, Auchenblae, Glenbervie, Catterline, and Kinneff. Here below are the inscriptions that we collected. All Petrie stones were photographed. If this goes out to the gang, and anybody wants a photograph, I will send it to their personal email address. Hi Karen Many thanks for sending the information you spotted on the Angus List... I have been off line the past couple of weeks, as the kids were on Easter Holidays from school, so I decided to have a break too, and had missed this..... I have this child and his parents etc in my database.... he was David Nicoll (aka Nichol) Petrie born 13 June 1824, died 12 October 1825 and buried in Longforgan Graveyard, his parents were Robert Petrie & Ann Hardie and I have further information on this family if anyone is interested. Dear Charles, Doubt if I have any connection for you, however, William Petrie came with a family of seven to New Brunswick, Canada , possibly aboard the Castilia, in 1873-74.. He was a brother of my great grandfather Joseph and his family of five and their father, my gg grand-father with five more family members. My grandfather Robert, son of Joseph, eight years old at the time was on of the five members of Joseph's family. Also aboard on that trip were William Pirie and family of eleven and Alexander Pirie, no family members with him. I have the history book of 618 people who arrived in the two trips, 0f 1873-74. Don't know if this is of any help to you. I have not been able to make any connections with my family, to date. We know that my Petrie family were all from the Aberdeen area. Hello Norma, Re- Margaret Petrie.... and wondering whether her parents might be William Petrie and Isobel Gordon, you thought that if I knew her emigration date it might help. Well at last I have that accurately. She departed from London on the "Maori" in 1855 and arrived in Otago, NZ on Nov 17th of that year and should probably show up on the 1841 and 1851 Census... maybe in Durris, Kincardineshire. Can I look that up and if so, how do I go about it??? Thanks for any help you may be able to give. Gillian, ChCh, New Zealand
Norma, I am beginning to realise that I have asked you a most difficult question for which I apologise! May I now appeal to someone / anyone on the list to help me? I have a specific need: Research through my Petrie forebears has led me to the possibility that Lord Elgin may be able to help me trace further back in my family line (which is also the line of list members Allan J. & Brian L.). However, I am having difficulty finding the correct postal address of Lord Elgin. What I do know is :- "Lord Elgin, descendant of King Robert. He, Andrew, Douglas Alexander, Thomas BRUCE, 11th earl of Elgin and > 15th Earl of Kincardine KT, CD, JP is Lord-Lieutenant of Fife and Chief of the Clan Bruce. He is also patron of the Fife Family History Society and presented them with a replica of Robert de Bruce's sword. He is also Lieut. Royal Company of Archers, the Queen's Body Guard in Scotland and is prominent in Scottish public affairs as convenor of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs. His address is Broomhall, Fife (although he may be from near Perth but this may be his office)." If it is not possible to advise me how I can write to him, could someone tell me the address (e-mail if at all possible), of the Fife Family History Society. Any assistance will be very much appreciated. Bruce Taylor Queensland, AUSTRALIA.
>From one Taylor to another: try [email protected] e-mail to get in touch with Lord Elgin. This is the e-mail of the Fife Family History Society. Good Luck Bruce! Bill Taylor, Waterville, Maine, U.S.A.

Hi Norma, Thanks for not doing the ironing that day. You can see I don't always pick up all of my messages when they come in. I usually have about 60 plus or minus that need to be read. This was one of them. No wonder it is so hard to trace our roots. The names in my family from your list are Alexander, George, John, Joseph, Robert, and William for males, and Agnes, Elspet or Elspeth, and possibly Elizabeth for females. I generally keep only the messages relating to those names showing that they were born or lived in or around Aberdeen since probably moving around was limited many years ago. Anyway, nothing has showed up definite for my family. I keep reading of your reunion plans and so wish that I was going to be there but so far have not found anyone to travel with. My nephew would, no doubt, be interested but being young with family responsibilites would be a financial burden. I keep hoping though. At least I got to meet with you last summer and had my trip to Scotland. *Barbara (Petrie) Sanborn (one of the common names) Brewer, Maine, USA Norma Thain wrote: > Hello the Petrie Gang, > > I can only agree with Emil, that the Petrie families of Scotland seemed to > have a core set of forenames which they continually used throughout the > generations...... Hi Thought I would post a few web-sites for those coming to the gathering. Places to visit in Dundee include the Royal Research Ship Discovery (this is it's centenary year) www.rrsdiscovery.com and the Industrial Museum, Verdant Works at www.verdant-works.co.uk Both these sites have links to The Old Steeple. Pictavia is just off the A90 near Brechin (NE of Dundee) www.pictavia.org.uk The Automobile Association has a web-site at www.theaa.com for anyone travelling by car and it has links to lots of useful information. And, finally, if anyone fancies treating themselves to a special meal while in the area I can recommend the Lands of Loyal in Alyth (5 miles from South Littleton). It's not cheap but well worth a visit on special occasions. We've been there twice for Sunday lunch and the food was WONDERFUL, my only complaint is that I couldn't decide what to have, it all sounded so good, they don't skimp on portions either. They can be found at www.freenetpages.co.uk/hp/lol-hotel/ Hope to have cost of tickets for ceilidh soon as we're now past the 30th March deadline. Best wishes to all Hazel
Stephen, Many thanks for your speedy response. I picked up the information from an e-mail to Petrie-Scotland dated 18th Feb 2001. My direct paternal line goes back to an Alexander Petrie who married Jean Bathie in 1776 and who was a blacksmith in Murroes. The Alexander born in 1761 was born in Murroes - thus my interest. Despite the geographic factors being right for this to be my ancestor, the arithmetic does not work. "My" Alexander would only have been 15 when married, and there is evidence of other possible children, out of wedlock, or to a previous wife before the marriage. I am still interested to build a picture of all the Petries in Murroes and surrounding parishes, so any information on the 1761 Alex is useful. I have about 4 other options for Alexander I am pursuing, but am somewhat depressed to hear that no-one has got further. There are a lot of areas I would like to research to pursue this, but find it difficult to do from a distance. I'm trying to make time to get a trip up to the Dundee Archives soon and will pass on anything I find. Yes, I am going to the Gathering and looking forward to it! You will be relieved to hear that Ryde hospital has now been demolished and the site redeveloped. Hello Norma, I wonder if you could tell me what I am doing wrong with my User name and Password. I got to the Family.com web site, but somehow didn't proceed to the Petrie web page. I'm not very knowledgeable on the workings of the Internet!! I am following the letters to Patricia with interest and have decided that the easy way to establish Margaret Petrie's mother's maiden name for certain, is to order her death certificate. Herb from Oxford... do you have an email address for Kate Petrie in Dunedin? I thought that you had given it to me, but I am unable to turn it up. All the best, Gillian, ChCh, New Zealand.
Hi there I'm trying to locate information on the parents of a David Petrie born in 1814 in Dundee David married Margaret Miller on 22 May 1835 in Dundee and I think his parents may have been Campbell Petrie and Barbara Shield although I have no firm evidence to substantiate this. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Jamie
