Pictures on their way, if not already arrived. Sorry, I do not think this is the correct John. There appears to be a one generation difference. The Alexander is my 3 x great grandfather. He was a weaver, and married Mary Peter 17 January 1782 at Laurencekirk, Kincardineshire. His first son John was born 5 July 1783 at Lauerencekirk, Kincardineshire, moved to Arbroath and on 24 November 1811 married Jane Brown. This John is my 2 x great grandfater. His only daughter Catherine was born 28 October 1784 at Brownhill, St Cyrus, Kincardineshire. She did not marry, and her death in Montrose was reported by her daughter. His second son David was born 11 June 1786 at Wardrosston, St Cyrus, Kincardineshire. Hope this clears this up. 3. Hi Gillian Did the passenger list for the Maori say how Margaret was travelling eg with a family, was their other Petries on board? Was she a single woman? regards Patricia -----Original Message----- From: Leon & Gillian Fox [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, 13 April 2001 9:40 p.m. To: [email protected] Subject: [Petrie-Scotland] Emigration Hello Norma, Re- Margaret Petrie.... and wondering whether her parents might be William Petrie and Isobel Gordon, you thought that if I knew her emigration date it might help. Well at last I have that accurately. She departed from London on the "Maori" in 1855 and arrived in Otago, NZ on Nov 17th of that year and should probably show up on the 1841 and 1851 Census... maybe in Durris, Kincardineshire. Can I look that up and if so, how do I go about it??? Thanks for any help you may be able to give. 3. Hi Norma and everyone This was listed as such:- MARYKIRK OLD Erected by JOHN PETRIE merchant Arbroath in remembrance of his father ALEXANDER PETRIE September 1829 aged 81 years also a brother and two sisters who are interred here 1. My John Petrie was of Laurencekirk and he married Margaret Innes of Marykirk in 1792. 2. In the IGI there is in St Cyrus the following John PETRIE Sex: M Event(s): Christening: 27 Aug 1769 Saint Cyrus, Kincardine, Scotland Parents: Father: Alexander PETRIE. The dates from the IGI would make this John a good candidate for being my John. The date of all of them would also tie in with the MI above. Clare, can you please send me the photo of this grave. I know I am just guessing here so I would like someone else's opinion. Once we get back this far, how can we tell for sure who belongs with who? I look forward to your suggestions. Patricia Taggart

    3. Hi Clare, Welcome to our list, I am not connected to this line, but find I have the following information in my database... Death Certificate Ref: 1881 DUNDEE (282-4) page 271 entry 812 (source Scottish Records Office) BRIDGET MARY SMITH married to JOHN NEWMAN PETRIE died 08 October 1881 age 32 years The information is unfortunately very limited due to the appalling handwriting of the registrar at the time, (I have in my notes that the record was almost impossible to read !) and it conflicts with regard to her age as stated in the 1881 census.... but it might open up some avenue's of research for you. Could it be she became ill after the birth of her child in 1881 and they returned home for a while to Dundee, Scotland ?? 1991 census might show John as a widower or with another wife, and may perhaps be more specific about his place of birth in Scotland.... which could be useful. The only information I find I have at the moment for a John N. Petrie born in Scotland around 1852 is John Nicholson Petrie baptised 3 November 1852 in Dundee - Parents: James Petrie & Alison Anderson Nicholson, however I have received details from another (non related) researcher that he died in 1933 in Dundee and was Unmarried....(although I have not verified this myself yet) He was a Ships Captain he is apparently famed for discovering & capturing a wanted murderer on his ship !! Hope some of the above is of interest. 1. [Petrie-Scotland] Virus
    2. Karen Hutten
    3. I know that we're not supposed to post messages about viruses but this one sounds especially evil becuase it can attack without using an attachment and has already been discovered on some Rootsweb lists for England. Warnings and cures have been circulating on the FreeBMD site today and I include them below. Karen Hutten -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I suspect Andrew may be along shortly to tell me off for posting virus warnings here, but this relates to a virus that does exist of some Transcribers machines, and which is being sent out in response to FreeBMD mailing list messages (I've had it arrive 3 times this morning). It cannot spread directly via the list, but you may get it as a response to list messages. This isn't a warning that claims to come from Microsoft or AOL etc. This is me telling you that the virus is out there and spreading by stealth. Description; + You will receive a reply to an e-mail that you sent (possibly to a mailing list) + The reply will quote part of your e-mail, using "-" as a quoting character instead of the more usual ">" and will have "====" on the second line + The last line of the quoted text will be truncated and end in ...' + The text "> Take a look to the attachment" will appear + A file, either news_doc.scr or New_Napster_Site.DOC.scr will be attached. How it works; .scr files are screensavers, which are really .exe files. The "doc" is really a program that once run (or previewed) in outlook express starts sending replies to messages in your inbox, spreading itself. What to do about it; I have no idea how to get rid of the virus, but if anybody has the removal instructions please post them here. The important advice is that if you get such an e-mail (or indeed any e-mail with an attachment that has a .scr extension) DELETE IT. Don't open it or preview it. AFAIK only MS Outlook Express is affected, but I could be wrong. Be very careful, this is a very cleverly designed virus intended to catch you off guard. -- Dave Mayall -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Fri, 20 Apr 2001 10:48:11 +0100, you wrote: >Dave, > >The repair/clean up tool is available at >http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected] > Having just checked, it is actually a different worm; http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected] -- Dave Mayall ==== FreeBMD-Admins Mailing List ==== Want to help FreeBMD? 1. Re: [Petrie-Scotland] New to the list
    2. Hi Clare, As I read your Email about the PETRIE family in Tranmere in the 1881 census, I couldn't help thinking what a small world it is! I wonder in what part of Scotland these PETRIEs originated? Tranmere is now part of Birkenhead, I believe....my Father and his family came from that area of Birkenhead....although he wasn't born until 1903, and his family apparently originated in the Shocklach area, near the Border of Wales in Cheshire on the maternal side and in Yorkshire on the paternal side. My father emigrated to the US in the early 1920s and met a Scots lass with a maternal Grandmother named PETRIE from Wick, in Caithness. They sometimes commented about the fact that they had to move 3000 miles away from home to find a spouse and start their family in a new country! Now I'm trying to research all the possible connections to trace where everyone came from. An interesting thought is that if you could go back 500 years you've got about one million direct ancestors......that's parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc.....And if what I've read is true there were only one million people living in England, Scotland and Wales at the time of the Norman conquest.....that's 935 years ago, so you and I must be related to everyone in England at that time....except the Royal Family, since they're German!!!! What is it that someone quotes on all their Emails....old genealogists never die, they just lose their census....please forgive the rambling, but I would certainly like to find a connection between my maternal and paternal ancestors in the 1800s in dear old Tranmere!!!! Maybeeeeeeee......me! I have the Auchtermuchty reel and have done some looking for my PETRIE connections, but Easter etc has prevented me doing any more. I am hoping that one of my friendly Mormon people will offer to baby sit me on Saturday afternoon. I am very spoilt by them as I have many of them as my customers and they do all they can to help me. Would have gone last night except I walked into an immovable object and the result was two broken toes on one foot. Much pain, swelling etc. - looking for sympathy <grin> so was not able to drive up after work. Will post to list when I finish. Wish I was coming to Scotland in August. I hope the FMD does not put the dampener on things for everyone. Best wishes to all Annette in Dubbo NSW

    3. Hi everyone, I bit the bullet last night and finally typed in some of my family tree to upload to the website. However, it's not as clear as it was now that it's on. I converted a Personal Ancestral File to Gedcom and seem to have lost some information, plus the christening dates don't show and I'm not sure where the marriage dates went so I typed some into the notes. It also starts with the farthest back and works forward i.e. John Petrie married to Betsy Robertson 7 Jul 1792. I'll maybe have to put the christening dates into the birth date section to make it easier to search (or just scrub it all and start again). Well, I did try! Who's going to be next?!! Hazel

Initially I almost walked by it but for some reason I turned around and picked it up. It was addressed to Aaron Petrie in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Small world. I gave him a call and met him today when he came to pick it up. I obviously asked him about his family roots (Scotland) and if he or anyone else in his family had done any family research. He has tried but unsuccessfully..... His email is [email protected] and I was hoping that we could invite him to join our list. I guess that is where you come in Norma since you would have to provide him with a password. He seemed excited about the opportunity of meeting some Petrie's. Karen

    3. Hi Jim This ALEXANDER PETRIE was my 3 x great grandfather born 22 April 1757 at Marykirk to WILLIAM PETRIE and MARY BURNS. The known children are JOHN PETRIE born 5 July 1783 at Laurencekirk and it is through him I am descended. Catherine born 28 October 1784 at Brownhill, St Cyrus, Kincardineshire, and DAVID born 11 June 1786 at Wardrosston, Kincardineshire. There is no clue as to which generation the brother and sisters belong, although probably with only three children to Alexander, they are possibly his children. I left it in the list in case some other relation spotted it.

The inscription from Marykirk was of great interest. "Erected by JOHN PETRIE merchant Arbroath in remembrance of his father ALEXANDER PETRIE September 1829 aged 81 also a brother and two sisters who are interred here" This gives a date of birth of 1748 for this Alexander. I believe that this may be the Alexander born in St Vigeans1749, and who married Margaret Dorward at Arbilot 21st April 1770. They had at least four children: a.. Isobel, Ch Carmyllie, 22/2/1771 b.. Helen, Ch St Vigeans 23/2/1773 c.. Alexander, Ch St Vigeans 1778 and d.. John, Ch St Vigeans 1782. This would tie in with the inscription, with John the youngest having a brother and two sisters. There is a slight discrepancy in the date of birth for Alexander, but a year out is not unusual. Does anyone have details of this family that would confirm these assumptions? This is not my family line but, as I say, helps me eliminate a possible Alexander from my search. Jim Petrie, Isle of Wight.

Is Robert McRae Petrie still out there? May we contact you too please? We have had computer hiccups lately, especially with e-mail, so feel we have missed some of the news. Thanks in anticipation.
