    1. [Petrie-Scotland] Jim Petrie - ANGUS MEMBERS
    2. Norma Thain
    3. Hi Jim, I did not see a reply come through to your enquiry... although I suspect you may have had some off- list... With regard to access to the Kirk Session records at Dundee City Archives, the chief archivist is Ian Flett, and they do ask you to telephone for an appointment, this way they can ensure that they have the records and equipment you need ready and available for you, and wherever possible let them know what you are looking for. Their Department is in Shore Terrace, just behind the Marryat Hall, and you would probably be best to park in the New Overgate Shopping Centre car park, and have a wee walk along to Shore Terrace...it will be cheaper and you will not be on a time limit as with the on-street parking in the city. The Dundee City Archive Department have their own website where you will find further information about the records they have available.... http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/archives/ The Tay Valley Family History Centre should have all the 1891 census information you need, and their on-line Library Catalogue lists all the items available in their library for you when you visit the centre.... http://www.tayvalleyfhs.org.uk/index.html so you can organise yourself with that beforehand too. The TVFHS webpage also has a number of useful links of other research facilities within the Angus area, which might interest you. I am not sure about the land ownership records, perhaps someone else can advise on this ?? But I know that the LDS (Mormon) Family History Centre in Bingham Terrace, Dundee have Sasine Index's and Records on Microfilm, and wonder if these might be useful. You can arrange a two hourly appointment with the LDS in Dundee by telephoning 01382 451247, but would suggest you do that now, as they are often booked up a couple of weeks in advance.... LDS, Dundee also have the SRO birth, marriage & death Indexes for Scotland from 1855 to c1950, and SRO birth, marriage and death Certificates on microfilm for Angus, Perth & Fife from 1855 through to 1875... and for the individual years of 1881 and 1891, (they also have bmd's for other area's too but the years available may vary...) so you may find more than you bargained for !!! :o) Hope you have a very successful day in Dundee.... Cheerio Norma ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Petrie" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 23, 2001 2:20 PM Subject: [Petrie-Scotland] ANGUS MEMBERS > Dear Angus Residents, > > I have an all too short few hours in Dundee in the middle of May and would like to use the time as effectively as possible. As I haven't used any facilities there for family research, I wondered if any of you who know the area could give me some advice. The sorts of things I would like to research are as follows: > a.. Old Kirk Session records for some Angus churches, which I know are held in the City Archivist's Department. I know exactly which ones I would like to see. Would I have to make arrangements in advance, or book? Are the staff quite helpful, possibly even looking material out in advance for me, given warning? Would I need to book a microfilm reader or anything? Where about is the Archive? What's car parking like in the city? > b.. 1891 Census for Dundee, probably St Andrews Parish - where's the best place to go, the City Archives, or the Tay Valley Family History Society? Again, do I need to organise anything in advance? > c.. Land Ownership records for part of Angus - Any view on the best place to go or methods to make best use of time? > I doubt if I will get half of what I would like to do done, but thought I could make best use of very short and hard to get, few hours in the city with the help of you experienced researchers out there, who I know are always happy to help. I'm aware the Forfar library also has a family history section but don't think I will have time to get there. > > Jim Petrie, Isle of Wight > > > ==== PETRIE-SCOTLAND Mailing List ==== > Checkout the Petrie Querie Board & Petrie Resource Page on the WWW > http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/pet/Petrie > >

    1. [Petrie-Scotland] Pam Greenway - Website problem
    2. Norma Thain
    3. Hi Pam, Was so sorry to hear that you had spent so much time on the website uploading your Petrie tree only to discover you had a problem. I can also see it in the list, but without any entries...did you upload a Gedcom file or create it within the website ?? I suspect the latter, and am afraid I am not sure at this point why it did not work, however you should have been able to edit it, and you certainly do not have to share your tree with Ancestry.com unless you wish to. I'm afraid it looks like you may have to try again, it might be easier for you to create your Petrie tree in your own Family Tree software package, save it as a Gedcom file, then upload it to the website.... rather than actually create it in the website...as there is always the chance that your ISP connection might go down and you lose your work....any chance this might have happened ?? The website is not updated as such, it simply changes and grows as items are added by our members. I'll try to find time to test out the Family Tree section myself this weekend.... 1. [Petrie-Scotland] Stupid Question
    2. Hopefully someone can help me! I just spent what seemed like hours putting my Petrie part of my family tree on the Petrie-Scotland web site. But, now I can't get back into it to make any changes - or even see it. Plus, it does not show that the web site has been updated since April 17th and today is May 1st. I can see it on the family tree list, but when I click on it the page comes up blank. Do you have to submit the tree to Ancestry.com before folks on the Petrie-Scotland site can see it? I really wasn't prepared to publish it to the world, but wanted to put it out there for the Petrie's. Any help greatly appreciated! 1. [Petrie-Scotland] Burgesses
    2. Clare & Murray Nicoll
    3. Patricia Burgesses were trades representatives. They were elected by the members of the trade to act on their behalf for the good of the trade. They formed the council of the trade. They had the power to make regulations, fine wrongdoers, expel them from the trade and various other punishments. They regulated the selling price for articles made, and made agreements for the purchase of the raw material in bulk which would then be sold on to the members of the trade. When an apprentice finished his time and wanted to become a journeyman, he had to make a test piece to be inspected by the burgesses, and if of good enough quality, the apprentice was admitted to the trade. Quality control was by inspection of the goods manufactured by the trade journeymen. The burgesses handled the cash flow of the trade council as well as poor relief for distressed members and their widows. Trades had "lofts" or balconies in churches where burgesses, members and families only were allowed to sit on Sundays. This is an compacted explanation Murray Nicoll

    3. ANCESTORS. If you could see your ancestors All standing in a row, Would you be proud of them or not, Or don't you really know? Some strange discoveries are made in climbing family trees, And some of them, you know, do not particularly please. If you could see your ancestors all standing in a row, There might be some of them perhaps you wouldn't care to know. But there's a different question which requires a different view, If you could see your ancestors, Would they be proud of you?

    1. [Petrie-Scotland] re-emigration and Margaret
    2. Leon & Gillian Fox
    3. Hello there to you Patricia, Margaret Petrie travelled out from Scotland in 1855 on her own and yes, she was a single woman and married Robert Gibson in Otago in 1859. I have always assumed that she was the Margaret Petrie who was a servant for the MacAndrews in the Thomas Burns diaries. I have been in touch with Kate Petrie and she may be able to give me a little more help. Hope I can get to the bottom of all this!! I'm sure there must have been some family back in Durris - I have not yet found who her Mother was for sure. Any help gratefully received!! Kind regards, Gillian.

    2. Jim Petrie
    3. Dear Angus Residents, I have an all too short few hours in Dundee in the middle of May and would like to use the time as effectively as possible. As I haven't used any facilities there for family research, I wondered if any of you who know the area could give me some advice. The sorts of things I would like to research are as follows: a.. Jim Petrie, Isle of Wight

    1. [Petrie-Scotland] RootsWeb Mail & AOL 6.0
    2. Hi All, Don't know if others on America On-line are having e-mail kicked back since upgrading to AOL 6.0 but thought I would share the recommended RootsWeb solution. The long mail I just sent on grave inscriptions contained a lot of cut and pasted segments that must have contained illegal characters causing it to be kicked back to me by RootsWeb the first time I tried to mail it. When I followed the RootsWeb HelpDesk instructions below, it went through fine. Dave Petrie Arden Hills, Minnesota, USA ================================================== I'm an AOL user, and I have this odd problem... I have experienced problems with e-mail since upgrading to AOL 6.0. Some users have experienced format problems when they upgrade. AOL 6.0 sends e-mail to the Internet in a multipart, alternative format that includes support for both plain text and HTML. This new feature lets AOL members send rich-text mail (including font formatting, faces, colors, and sizes) to Internet recipients. When e-mailing to a RootsWeb mailing list, you will need to use the plain-text setting. RootsWeb users report the following method will enable AOL version 6.0 users to send plain text e-mails. Complete your e-mail Right click inside the text box Click Select All (at the bottom of the menu) Right Click in the text box again Click Text Click Normal Send the e-mail in the usual way

With her Petrie grandparents in St.Cyrus (likely that Jessie and George lived with her Petrie grandparents). George b. Abt. 1867 d. 4 Jul 1940 (age 74) Whitehill(s), St.Cyrus, Kincardineshire, Scotland. 1881 Census Dundee: Jessie S. Petrie daughter age 2 born Dundee. Jessie was the informant on the death certificate (18 Sep 1911, Montrose) of her grandfather Robert's sister, Jean Mather Petrie Bain. Apparently Jean Mather Petrie and John Millar Bain had no children of their own. My great great grandfather (brother to the above Robert Petrie) was David Petrie: David Petrie b. 3 Sep 1804 (ch. 25 Dec 1804) Drumhendrie, Parish of Fettercairn, Kincardineshire, Scotland m(1). Mary Steele "Peebles" 12 Jun 1830 St.Cyrus Parish, Kincardineshire, Scotland d. 23 Jul 1877 at 3:05 AM (age 73 years 11 months) Braefoot, Carnoustie, Barry, Angus, Scotland. Occupation: ploughman, agricultural labourer and cattle keeper. David's death certificate: occupation given as "Ploughman." Cause of death shown as "Chronic Diarrhea (2 months). Death registered by Alexander Paton (brother-in-law) Dundee Street, Carnoustie, 24 July 1877 at Barry Angus. Mary: bur. Saint Vigeans, near Arbroath, Scotland. 1841 census for St. Vigeans: age 35, address Cairnbennet, St. Vigeans, Angus, agricultural labourer. FORDOUN OPR 1828 Baptisms (LDS film 0993317): "JAMES PATRIE subtenant on Drumsleed and ISOBEL GREIG his wife had their daughter JEAN born 10th July 1828 Baptized August 17 1828. (end of entry)" Baptism was witnessed by "John & David Petrie, sons of the said James Petrie." Mary Steel Petrie age 35. 1871 census: Braefoot, Barry, Carnoustie occupation labourer, age 66 years, place of birth Fettercairn, marital status widower. From Mary Gunn-Smallwood's work "When Leland and Faye Gubb visited Scotland in 1979 they were able to find the cemetery in which he (David) was buried, but since there were no headstones, could not find the exact grave." Also, the information on David and his family came, in part, from the back of a photograph of David. Norma (Petrie) Thain writes further (1998) "You will notice that DAVID & MARY married in St.Cyrus, Kincardineshire, have a look at your map of Scotland and you will see that although they married in another County, Kincardine borders with Angus, and St.Cyrus is very near to Montrose, they then moved onto Logie-Pert, which is a small village between St.Cyrus & Brechin in Angus. They are next noted in Dunnichen, Angus, which is lovely because it's only about 1 mile from my home and my children go to Sunday School in the same church they had (their son) David Petrie christened in..... (my GGGGGrandmother was also christened in Dunnichen Church in 1765, her father was the local miller), they have then moved onto St. Vigeans, which is just outside Arbroath and perhaps they were all living in Panbride which is just outside Carnoustie around the 1860's at the time of (their daughter) Mary's marriage (1863) and before his (David's) death in Carnoustie in 1877. They certainly moved around in comparison to other Petrie's at that time." [See comments concerning hiring fairs from Christine Mary (Mackenzie) Glover of Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland under Robert Petrie b. 17 Feb 1883, the grandson of this David's brother Robert. Christine's comments help explain why the family of a ploughman would have had to move so often.] Mary b. Abt. 1804 Angus, Scotland d. Bef. 1846 St. Vigeans, Angus, Scotland. Notes for MARY STEELE: On her son James' birth record extract "Peebles" is attached to Mary's name. This is the area in St. Vigeans Parish where the family probably lived when James was born in 1841. It may have been a farm or an estate. It still appears on the Scottish ordinance survey map today as "Peebles." The following description from St. Vigeans contains a reference to "Peebles." " The following are the names I collected at St. Vigeans churchyard extension, which does not have many old stones. Sandstone, 4 feet tall. Script C/In loving memory/of/JamesCuthill/late of/Mid Peebles Farm/who died 27th September 1962/aged 81 years/At rest. (Mid Peebles is about 2 miles northwest.)"
