Hi Jacqui, I often visit our local LDS, and can get the full details from Christian's 1856 death certificate for you next time I am there, unless you have access to these records yourself ?? I personally would be cautious in attributing your Henry Petrie to Alexander Petrie/Mother unnamed in Murroes in 1833, although this one does seem the most likely since it's in the same village, but I can see in the IGI and my database that there are a few Henry Petrie's born in and around 1830 - 1840 very nearby, such as Panbride, Forfar & Inverarity, also there is always a chance that your Henry's birth was not recorded in the IGI or surviving OPR's for any number of reasons. So I'd be looking for some further evidence to prove for sure he was the Henry Petrie born in 1833.... it is tempting though !! :o) I am not so sure either about Alexander Petrie & Isobel Mill being your Henry's parents.... I have detail of the family of Alexander Petrie & Isobel Mill, again no marriage date for them, but their children were all born in Panbride, Angus between 1697 & 1714...with two sons named Henry being born the first must have died shortly after his birth in 1706 with the next born son again named Henry in 1708.... this Henry would have been a good old age by the time your Henry Petrie & Margaret Elder had their last known child Agnes in 1781...but I appreciate it's not impossible !!! :o) I do not know of a Janet Petrie daughter of Henry Petrie & Margaret Elder ?? Have I caused confusion mentioning my Janet Elder in my last mail ?? woops...sorry... !! :o) Here are the 9 children I know of Henry Petrie & Margaret Elder all born in Murroes (source IGI) Alexander Petrie b. 1761 James Petrie b. 1764 Isobel Petrie b. 1766 Elspeth Petrie b. 1768 Henry Petrie b. 1770 Mary Petrie b. 1772 Christian Petrie b. 1776 Helen Petrie b. 1778 Agnes Petrie b. 1781 I have details from the above Agnes Petrie's death certificate in 1856. And from graveyard inscriptions in Murroes Churchyard have a "hunch" which still waits to be proven on the spouse of the above Helen Petrie.... have similar unproven "hunches" on spouses for the above James & Isobel if you are interested in following them up with further research to verify them. I'd be pleased to pass them on, just let me know... I am wondering if anyone else here on the list has found further information on this Petrie line which would prove useful to Jacqui .... ?? Elder connections.... My Janet Elder was born 02 July 1779 at Tealing daughter of David Elder & Jean Curr who had married 1770 at Tealing, I was able to prove her parental & birth details through her death certificate in 1867....thankfully she lived the good old age of 92 which helped me enormously, oh to be so lucky all the time !! :o) Cheerio the noo Norma ----- Original Message ----- From: "jacqui ross" <[email protected]> To: "Norma Thain" <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, May 17, 2001 12:52 PM Subject: Petrie/Davidson/Elder Hi Norma, Thank you for the information about Christina Petrie's death and burial. I know what you mean about not writing down all the details. I did the same thing when I was first starting out and caused me to trace the wrong line of family. You learn by your mistakes! I only have 8 children for Henry Petrie and Margaret Elder (my 6 x G/Granparents). Janet is the one I don't have - I will add her to my tree. Would I be right in saying that Henry Petrie was christened on 9/5/1733 in Murroes, son of Alexander Petrie? I have a possible mother - Isobel Mill and I have Margaret Elder as christened 30/11/1740 Tealing, daughter of James Elder. It is impossible to be sure, especially when the OPR's only record the father's name. Thanks again. Jacqui Ross
Hello to All: Hello to the Scotland Petrie List: I am the great grandson of James Petrie and Jessie Sim of Arbroath, Scotland. I personally knew their son (my grandfather) when he was alive. He was also named James Petrie. Only recently, I got my grandfather's birth record from the General Registry in Edinburgh. Until then, I did not know the name of his father and mother. I am interested in going back further in time in this line. If anyone has information to share with me, I would be most delighted to have you send it along to me. For whomever may be interested, I am providing below, a list of the descendents of James and Jessie of whom I currently have information. I am excited about becoming a member of this group and will be interested to see information about other Petrie family members from Scotland. Hi Jacqui I do not have date of marriage for Christian Petrie & Andrew Davidson, but know of the marriage from her 1856 death certificate..... unfortunately I do not have the "full" transcription of this certificate yet as it is one I found many years ago when I used to just note down basic details.... Death Certificate Ref: 1856 CARMYLLIE (p1/e3) (source Scottish Records Office) CHRISTINA PETRIE widow of ANDREW DAVIDSON died at New Mains, The Guynd, Carmyllie, Angus on 29 MARCH 1856 age 80 YEARS Buried at Murroes Graveyard SRO Parents: HENRY PETRIE & MARGARET ELDER ********** Henry Petrie & Margaret Elder married in 1760 at Tealing, Angus and had 9 known children. I am particularly interested in the Elder/Petrie connection, as my gggg grandmother was Janet Elder of Tealing.....born 1779, she married Robert Malcolm (date unknown) and her daughter Mary Malcolm went on to marry my ggg grandfather Alexander Petrie in 1826 at Monifieth.... It only took a month but I finally was able to access the latest rage over here -- the passenger records of arrivals at Ellis Island, New York in the early 1900's. Records give the passenger's name, ethnicity, residence, name of ship, age at arrival, year of arrival, port of departure, and marital status. A search of the name PETRIE of Scottish ethnicity yielded 236 results. For those of you who live in Great Britain, Australia, or New Zealand, the time difference works in your favor and your searches should take less time. Hi here, I have no Angus Petries in my family that I know of, however here is an interesting web page that I accidentally stumbled on, of the kirkyard at Monikie, at http://www.monikiescotland.freeserve.co.uk/kirkyard.htm#10 This lists, 1 PETREY and five PETRIES, it may be worth a look Regards George Henderson
I have found a site www.monikie.org.uk. if you go to the grave part of the site there is a list of inscriptions of PETRIE's burried there.Hope this may help someone Yours Jayne
Thanks to all those that sent me tips on accessing information in Dundee and on car parking, etc. Inevitably, in a short visit, I only managed a fraction of what I had hoped to do, but it was productive and I have a lot of sources to follow up on future trips. The temporary, one way traffic system did play havoc with my timing. The City Archivist was very helpful and I had a good dig through the Kirk Session records for Murroes and Monifieth for the late 18th and early 19th centuries. As always, the holes in the information were at the key dates I was interested in, but I did pick up a scattering of Petrie tit-bits that add to the overall picture, mostly on my own line. There are one or two pieces outside that, for Murroes. >From mortcloth records, Henry Petrie, born 9/5/1733 died in July 1793. Again, from mortcloth records, Alexander Petrie had a child that died Nov 1790. There is no christening record for this child. Margaret Petrie, possibly the one born 1704, was on parish charity for a long period up to 1806 and would have needed it if she lived to 102 years! John Petrie, born 1779, was obviously quite a successful cap maker and paid for a pew over a period of time, including 14/- in 1825, quite a lot of money then. The money went to the poor. The Monifieth Kirk Session was particularly keen on detailed investigation and punishments for "ante nuptial fornication" - lots of juicy gossip there! Unfortunately, the period I was interested in was missing. Went to the Flinders Petrie exhibition at the Burrell which seems to follow his approach of making Egyptology accessible and popular. Have a catalogue which I will bring to the Gathering. Do we know anything about his branch of the family? Jim Petrie, Isle of Wight.

Hi Patrica As far as I am aware none of the PETRIE's in my family went back to Scotland to get married. Those that came out to NZ seem to have got married here. Certainly no Kiwi born lasses went to Scotland to get married. Mind you, my family did not arrive until 1906. Hope you enjoy the trip. We are hoping to get to the UK next year for about six months. Hi folks, I've had a request from a lady named Judi Boiteau (nee Crooks) who is trying to find an old pen pal John Petrie born c1960 lived sometime in Bearsden, Glasgow, before going to Aberdeen University, he lived in Aberdeen for a time, and married Margaret ?? in early 1990's, she thinks they moved to London to work, but the last known address she has for them was in Peterborough, England. If anyone knows this John & Margaret Petrie please e.mail me off list....and I will be pleased to pass Judi's address details on so that they can contact her again if they wish . Hello All In preparation for our trip to the gathering I decided to re-write my Petries on my website at www.taggart.co.nz. While adding my G G Grandparents page of John Petrie and Jane Robertson (married in Scotland), I noticed that the 3 daughters - all born in New Zealand went back to Scotland and married. I don't know what happened to them, whether they came back to NZ or whether they settled in Scotland with their husbands. I couldn't find Mary-Anne Petrie and John Cameron in the 1881 census! I wonder if this was common for families to send their daughters back for marriage. Gavin & Hugh, did this happen with your NZ Petries too? These are the girls - has anyone come across them in their research? Mary-Anne PETRIE was born about 1862. She married John CAMERON in Scotland? 2 Feb 1877. Jean PETRIE was born about 1869. She married William BARCLAY in Scotland. Christina PETRIE was born about 1878. She married M LOW 6 Jul 1904 in Scotland. I look forward to your comments. regards Patricia Taggart
Elspeth Petrie and William Meffan married on 13 May 1815 at Inverkeilor, Angus, Scotland. They had at least 6 children, including a Betty who was christened on 12 June 1825 at Inverkeilor, Angus, Scotland. She married a David Mouatt on 30 May 1851 at Inverkeilor, Angus, Scotland. A descendant of Betty believes that Elpseth was from Unst, Shetland but has no further info. Does anyone else have anything else on this couple? Tony Gott
Hi Everyone, Just thought we would tell you that we have "bit the bullet" and will be at the Gathering come August - we have been waiting for years to visit so now is the time! There will be four of us travelling around GB in a Motorhome, so if you see a Motorhome with a small Australian postcard sized flag placed in a window - come over and say "hello" it will probably be us - lost again! We know we will not see half we would like but some is better than nothing. We intend being in Orkney about Aug 1st hopefully! to check Roy's Petries and Ogilvies so will then see you all in Dundee about August 9 - ten weeks till we land at Heathrow July 15th. We can't wait, please pray the dollar goes up for us - at the moment we get 35 pence for our dollar!! Regards Roy and Marge from sunny Brisbane. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
Hi Nick, My apologies for not replying sooner, I am caught up with the breeding season of our aviary full of canaries, and am currently playing Mother hen to two abandoned chicks, however I have finally managed to sit them here next to me and my PC where I can keep an eye on them !! So am finally managing to catch up :o) It's good to hear from you again, and thanks so much for sending on a scan copy of the gravestone of your William Petrie & Elizabeth Watson. I'm afraid we cannot get a marriage certificate for your David Petrie & Mary Duthie since they married in 1845 and official marriage certificates did not start in Scotland until 1855, although the Old Parish Record entry of the marriage may hold some further information if you can look it up. I'm afraid we will need to find David's death date & death certificate to find further information on who his parents were. Although it may be worthwhile checking out the 1851 census for St. Cyrus for David & Mary & their family as we know they were there in 1850 when their daughter Elizabeth was born. if we could get his age and place of birth it would help narrow down the search for his birth. I am currently working through a pile of Petrie certificate that I have recently transcribed and then I plan to update my database index, the marriage indexes and add further new Petrie info that I have to the website.... all hopefully ready for the Gathering in August.... I'll announce on the list as soon as I upload them.
