Alexander Petrie, my grandfather's brother is mentioned on the Black Watch Boer War Memorial on the Mound. He died of enteric fever after surviving the war. Thanks to all of you who responded to my request. I will get my brother to have a look at the responses and see what he thinks best fits for our grandfather since he knew him better than I. What we discovered on the internet search were the following: There is an estate in Abercorn Northern Ireland - listed under Townlands by Major Estate - Barony of Dunluce, Stanalane. In another search we found "Stanalane Estate" location - Isle of Islay. Islay has it's own family history web site but I think we need to try to figure out a bit more before I go that route. Stephen Baker probably has the more interesting description! Thanks Stephen. The first house that my grandfather John (Jack) Petrie build here in Canada was in fact stone and is still very lovely. I am quite sure it is how he likely remembered homes in Scotland. I also hope all of you have a wonderful time at when you meet in Scotland - I will wish I was there. Karen
Hello Norma, Many thanks for your email. I have been overseas for some time and then the Computer went in to get some memory added so I have not been around for months, but am enjoying catching up on all the Petrie mail that has come in. Herb and Patricia.. I really envy you your wonderful trip. All the best to you both. Have a great time. Is this your first trip to Scotland? I still have not made it there, but maybe one of these days... Gillian. ChCh. NZ
According to my Scots/English dictionary .... "stane an lime" means "masonry". Perhaps this is a corruption and the cottages were stone built? "Stane" also means "millstone" or "testicle"!!! :0( Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stone and lime - that's how they would be built if built with stone and not bricks - the lime is the major component of the joining material - as mortar is with bricks. Karen: Depending on what part of Scotland your grandfather came from it could also be "stand alone" in the local dialect. Margaret Morgan
I have recently discovered that my grandfather called all of his cottages "Stanalane" which is something he brought with him from Scotland. Does this name mean anything in particular that anyone has heard of before? Thanks Karen
Hello All The Gathering is now four weeks away and we are looking forward to fitting this into the middle of our holiday to Scotland. We are staying at a cottage very near to where the Ceilidh is being held - at Alyth - for a week. We shall be bringing a few pictures with us and out Petries of Kirkmichael family tree, for all those who would like to look at it :0( We shall try to upload this to the web site before the Gathering. Unfortunately, we don't have a laptop so cannot bring the 1881 census with us. If anyone would like lookups of ANY family doing, please bring the requests with you - or e-mail them to us now - and we shall send the results later. If you e-mail requests to me (privately, not via the List) please let us know if you will be at the Gathering. If you will not be there, we shall e-mail the results; if you will be there we can bring them with us. The same applies to the Vital Records Index for the UK. We have this, but it has very little Scottish data. It is mainly English, unfortunately. The Petries have already been put on the web site. Looking forward to seeing some of you next month, and to meeting up AGAIN with Norma, Hazel and their families. Cheerio for now from sunny Yorkshire, England :0) :0) Karen and Stephen Baker

Hi to all who will be going to the gathering I thought I would post a few items which may be of interest for those who are extending their stay and visiting Edinburgh. 1/7/01-24/3/02 DISPLAY 'Altogether a Delightful Country' - The Scots in Otago. The first in a series of displays looking at the Scottish diaspora in the 18th and 19th centuries. The exhibits, on loan from New Zealand, are typical of the items taken by Scots immigrants to their new home; they include kilts, bagpipes and commemorative objects which reflected their strong sense of Scottish identity. Mon-Sat: 10.00-17:00 Tues: 10.00-20.00 Sun: 12.00-17.00 Admission: FREE. Royal Museum of Scotland, Chambers Street, Edinburgh. 30/7/01-31/8/01 TOUR: University of Edinburgh Old College Tours. FREE guided tours of the Old College. A rare insight into an outstanding working building and a chance to see one of Edinburgh's most beautiful libraries. Meet at the University Centre on Nicolson Street at 1pm Mon-Fri. 5/8/01 FESTIVAL: Edinburgh Festival Cavalcade. Sun. 2.30pm. Last years parade included 35 floats, 36 bands including the cast of the Military Tattoo, 200 walkers and 200,000 spectators! Admission FREE Princes Street, Edinburgh. And of course the cavalcade marks the start of the Edinburgh International Festival (Official, Fringe, Jazz, Book, you name it). Hazel Edinburgh
Hi Billie, Welcome to the list.... We have just put some details of this on the website, for those who may be able to get to Edinburgh Castle during the Gathering trip!! We found it very interesting when we were ther last year. Hope to see many of you very soon!! Stephen and Karen Baker
I guess I should hav been more specific about my last message regarding look-ups at the SRO during the Gathering. If you want a look-up, please state exactly what you want someone to check. For example: Birth - James Petrie-1838-Montrose-s/o William & ? Marriage - James Petrie-1857-Dundee-Agnes Duncan Death - James Petrie-1901-Dundee-h/o Agnes, s/o William Petrie Other records are available. Please check out the web page at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/intro.html for a description. If you've already sent me a request, could you please review it and see if you can be more specific and resubmit it. That way I won't list something you don't want or need. Thanks, Karen
Dear Folks, I am researching my Gran's Petrie family who lived in Inverness. John Petrie married Jean Reid 18 July 1767 Inverness. They had at least 8 children the youngest Thomas b.4 Sept 1787 being my ancestor. John and Jean are both buried in the Chapelyard cemetary Inverness. Beside their flat stone is another Petrie one recording James Petrie, 'sheriff and burges of Inverness' and his spouce Barbra Goland (Gollan, in the OPR). James and Barbra may be John's Grandparents. If any one else is researching Petrie's in the Inverness area and can shed any light on this family it would be great to hear from you. I am away camping till Sunday 22 July (to the Northeast of Scotland),so I will not be about to repy if anyone recognises the above names. Yours sincerely, Alasdair F Macdonald Interested in Scotland? Visit http://www.scotland.com today!
In order to reach the most potential connections at the Gathering, we'd like to compile a list of all Petrie researchers and their particular interests. We'll have this printed off and available at the Information Desk. Please send me, via private e-mail, the following: Name Postal address E-mail address Earliest Petrie you are researching, dates, location(s) The thought occured to me that perhaps those who will be going to the New Register House (SRO) might be willing to do some look-ups for those of us who won't be able to attend. Send in your requests - no more than 3, please - and we'll try to answer your questions. Send in the researcher information and SRO requests no later than July 20 so I can compile it and send it on for printing. Thanks, Karen Hutten [email protected]
Hi Gang, I have recently uploaded to our Petrie of Scotland Website a copy of a "Public Notice" for our Petrie of Scotland Gathering, in the Marryat Hall, Dundee which will hopefully bring some interested Petrie descendants from the general public in to join us all at the Gathering from 12 noon - 4.30 pm. If you feel you can drum up interest by posting the notice(s) up in your local area (Libraries, FHS, Community Hall, Local Post Office etc etc ) it would be very much appreciated..... Please download it from the website, or alternatively if you prefer I can e.mail it to you as an attachment. Cheerio Norma
Margaret PETRIE, born c 1765 in Scotland, married John SIMPSON and baptized 6 children in Rothes (Moray) 1799-1812. They came to Canada 1815 (Margaret's birthdate is from Canadian sources). Simpson is a mystery. For Margaret, however, the most likely baptism from the Scottish Church records is in 1765 Elgin, daughter of George PETRIE and Janet CALDER. George PETRIE probably was a blacksmith, and son and grandson of blacksmiths in Elgin. He seems to be the son bapt 1740 of Thomas PETRIE and Margaret BUIE in Elgin. Petrie blacksmiths and other tradesmen remained in Elgin into the 19th century. Janet CALDER may be the daughter bapt 1735 of Alexander CALDER and Margaret FORSYTH in Earnside, Alves. I would be grateful to hear from anyone with possible knowledge of these people, beginning of course with Margaret PETRIE. Thank you. Kris Inwood [email protected]
Hi Terri, I am digging around in my files, and came across your query on George Petrie who was witness at your GG Grandparents wedding. I found in 1881 census info a George Petrie of Westfield Cottage, (Home Farm), New Spynie, Elgin (1881 NEW SPYNIE, ELGIN (district 1 page 4) which is same address of the marriage. >From his age & place of birth on the census I can match him in the database as son of William Petrie & Isabella Ralph, I have William & Isabella's 1859 marriage cert at Alves, Moray and his parents are noted as William Petrie & Jane Thompson. According to the age on the marriage certificate William was born c1829, unfortunately I have no details of his birth or his parents Marriage in the database. Hope it's of interest.
