Hi Petrie Pilgrims We are all now counting the days before our Petrie of Scotland Gathering in Dundee, and I'll very shortly be sending out through the List & website, a final update e.mail for each of the separate events. Since we have been talking & planning this Gathering for over a year now, I know we are all very much looking forward to meeting each other and I do hope it will be a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone .... As I pull together the final details I particularly want to thank Hazel & Dave Garside, who are hosting and organising our Family Ceilidh at their home farm, also Jim Petrie, Wilma Gall, Karen Hutton, Clare & Murray Nicoll, Stephen Baker & Patricia Taggart for all their efforts and assistance, and the very many of you who have constantly offered support, encouragement, enthusiasm and your very good wishes towards our Petrie Family Gathering. I'll be posting to the website a list of the names of all those who are attending..... at the last count we have around 80 attending Friday & Saturday's events, and around 35 for our Edinburgh trip on the Monday.... Now you'll have to forgive my final detail e.mails if they sound a bit formal and to the point, I'm just trying to get the information out as concisely as possible, and have to constantly stop myself from turning them into a "major blether"..... (you know me !! :o) but with the preparation and planning in place, hopefully it will all be a very relaxed and informal affair for everyone :o) If anyone is bringing along their Digital Camera please do us a huge favour and take a some pictures to share on the Website with our absent cousins & friends !!! :o) For those of you who are about to embark on their long awaited trip, may I wish you a very safe & pleasant journey on the "Road and the Miles to Dundee" !! :o) For the words of the song....see http://www.acronet.net/~robokopp/scottish/cauldwin.htm. (click on Melody to hear it ) Don't forget to be singing it loud & clear as you approach Dundee !!!..... and it's absolutely obligatory on the return bus home from the Ceilidh !!!! ha ha :o) Cheerio the noo Norma
Norma, I havn't been able to do much work on Ross's behalf for some time, since I have been travelling around and then I had to buckle down and read the volumous amount of 'Petrie e-mails' which have dropped into my in-box. However, and relatively speaking, Ross has a major problem which is two fold. Firstly, unlike myself ( a Flett from 'Finnichty' on the Moray Coast whose maternal ancesters lived in the same house for 150 years and in the same village for almost 400 years), Ross has little information on his family's geographical roots or source other than his father was born in Milnathort in Kinross-shire. Secondly, he has little information to provide me with by way of a point of departure other than his father's name, place of birth and date of birth. However, bearing in mind that his father's birth certificate should carry should carry details of his grandparent's place and date of marriage; and so forth, this single tenuous thread of information might just be enough...but with a little help? Unfortunately I have deleted one e-mail too many, but I recall that you mentioned that some obliging Petries may be prepared to consult the records in New Register House in Edinburgh. If that is the case, the information I have to hand is as follows: Father... Arthur William Petrie born in Milthnathort on 21st March 1917. Grandfather...William Petrie Grandmother...Isabella ? Regards John
Hello Gordon, It was very nice to hear from a Petrie connection in Christchurch. My connections really come through my Great Grandmother on my Mother's side. She was Margaret Petrie and she emigrated to NZ, via Wellington on the Maori and arrived in Dunedin in 1856. I understand that she was born in Durris, Kincardineshire in January 1835 and that her father, William Petrie, was from Malloch (which I believe is in Kincardineshire). So, your Dundee connection is a little further south than mine. I haven't been able to establish for sure just which family Margaret is from but she married Robert Gibson in 1869 in Otago. I'd love to hear of your connections. Are you going to the Petrie Gathering in August? Look forward to hearing from you..... Gillian, Christchurch, NZ.
Hello Norma, In just writing to Gordon here in ChCh and saying that Margaret Petrie was born in Durris, Kincardineshire January 1835 - I wonder if previously I was giving you Malloch as her birthplace?(Her obituary had said that her father, William Petrie was from Mallaoch). Just a thought. Thanks for any info you can come up with although I imagine that right now is a very busy time for you! Thankyou and all the best, Gillian. ChCh.
I've put the list of researchers on the web site in the File Cabinet. For privacy reasons, postal addresses have not been included, but will be at the Gathering in case some visitors do not have e-mail access. Please let me know of any changes. Karen Hutten [email protected]
Hi Norma, Am horrified to see how quickly the Gathering is rushing upon us - thanks for you various mails. I am looking forward to it but have been so snowed under with work recently that have been neglecting my in box. Will try and get round to some of your requests soon. Jim Petrie Isle of Wight

Hi Jamie Alexander, I think you may be looking for the Forth Railway Bridge, not the "Fourth". The Forth Railway Bridge spans the mouth of the Forth River at Queensferry, Scotland. It was built around 1890. What do you think? Good luck! Bill Taylor, Waterville, Maine U.S.A.
Is there someone who would be willing to do a very precise library look-up for me in Edinburgh, or possibly your local Scottish library? I am simply trying to find out if there is a record of the existence of the architectural practice of my great-grandfather, Mitchell Graham (no, not a Petrie, but I don't know where else to ask for this kind of help). His practice, Mitchell Graham and Sons, in Edinburgh, was supposedly employed on the Fourth Rail Bridge project, abt 1885-1890, though I do not know in what capacity. I only wish to find evidence that such a practice actually existed, and possibly an address in Edinburgh for the business or whatever other information might be readily available. I have been told by the West Search Room Archivist, National Archives of Scotland, West Register House Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, that I might consult the "Directory of British Architects 1834-1900," London (1993) by the British Architectural Library and Royal Institute of British Architects for a listing of practicing architects in Edinburgh at the time of Fourth Rail Bridge construction, . "There is a copy here in the West Search Room but you may also find a copy in your nearest main library." I'm sorry, but my nearest British library is thousands of miles across the Atlantic... (sigh!) The archivist also stated: "There are Post Office Directories for Edinburgh and Leith for the period 1850-1900, and these contain entries for architectural practices. Available at Edinburgh Central Library, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EG. A quick look in either of these sources (any of the years 1885-1890) should suffice. It will either be there or it won't. I would be very thankful for any assistance. I would be delighted to return the favor if anyone has any bit of information that wants searching in or about the city of Philadelphia, in the state of Pennsylvania, USA. By the way, I do have Petrie ancestors and am waiting with great anticipation for the results of the coming Gathering. I'll be there in spirit...

Hi Russ, I note in your response to someone on the PETRIE list, the Georgina PETRIE information. I know I'm grasping at straws, but It's worth a try.....I have never found the birth records of my Great Grandmother, Catherine PETRIE. I do know she was born in Caithness, probably Wick about 1850. I deduce this from two pieces of separate information....her marriage certificate in 1872 in Glasgow, where she is listed as being 22 years old and that her parents (both deceased) were George PETRIE and Elizabeth CAMPBELL, both of Wick. Also, she is listed on the 1861 census for Wick as a 12 year old servant to the BREMNER family at their farm, Barnyards, just outside of Wick. She is listed as a cowherd, born in Caithnesshire. What made your email particularly interesting is that she named her first born child, my Grandmother, Isabella BAIN (MOYES, her married name). Since she gave her first child the middle name of BAIN, is it possible that the Georgina BAIN mentioned in your Email could be a cousin or possibly a half sister? As I say, I'm grasping at straws, but desperate people look for any connections that might exist! I've found no records of George PETRIE, her father (my great great Grandfather) or her Mother, Elizabeth CAMPBELL! Thanks for any thoughts you might have....or anyone else on the PETRIE list! Last call for submissions for the list of Petrie researchers. I've heard from only 30 people yet I know there are over 100 on the list. Please send me your name, postal and e-mail addresses, name of the earliest Petrie you are researching, date, and location. In addition to having this list available at the Gathering, I will post it on the web site. Karen Hutten [email protected]
Dear Norma, Wishing you a very happy birthday for 25 July. Thank you for all your support and valued help. Best wishes. Cheers, Ian

Hi gang My aunt and I just got our travel arrangements made but now I need a place to stay in Edinburgh for the Monday night. Can anyone give me the name of a good B&B there for the night. Janine
Margaret Morgan and Derek Heath are correct: "Stanalane" is simply Scots for "stand alone". For the Scot, this has connotations not only of a self-standing cottage but also of the independent, self-reliant, lone-standing Scot, whether in opinion or in geographical isolation. All the best to all, Ivor Normand (Edinburgh)
Hi Jane, Here's my two cents on New Pitslago, (there is a New Pitsligo, Scotland, by the way): one cent:Aberdeenshire, Scotland has(or had) a Pitslago Parish two cents:"A small country town near Peterhead" I know it's not much, but I haven't written for awhile and felt the urge. I read all the emails looking for my Alexander Petrie. Sure are a lot of them! I wish you all well at the gathering! My best, Bill Taylor , Waterville, Maine, U.S.A.
