Hello Patricia, Well, I have studied and studied and I still have the feeling that Margaret Petrie's parents are William Petrie/Isobel Gordon, born Sept 1834 Durris, Kincardine. I have just sent an email to Kate Petrie in Dunedin as I have a thought that she may know Margaret's parents. Fingers crossed, although it is getting pretty close to your departure date. I'll email as soon as I hear. Yes, all your other details are correct. Margaret Petrie married Robert Gibson on 11th March 1859.(Otago) Their 3rd son was John, born 14th July, 1864, and he married Elizabeth (Bessie) Petrie and they had 3 children. Robert and Margaret had 12 children and one of them has Isabella as a christian name (which might tie in with Isobel Gordon). So they are - William, Robert, John, Arthur Petrie, James Thomas, Susanna Hastings, Henry George, Anne Isabella, Edgar Harvey, Herbert, Margaret Petrie, and Isabella Thomson. Their Grandmother on the Gibson side was Isabella Thomson so that might account for the "Isabella". Hope all this is not just a muddle for you Patricia. Hopefully I will get back to you before you leave, or maybe I will be able to let Norma know if I get a result from Kate Petrie. Kind regards, Gillian. ChCh. NZ

Hi All ..... Know how you feel Barbara!!!! All the best to those who will be attending - don't have too many toasts in honour of those unable to gather, or you won't feel too well the next day!!! Hi Gang, Ok this is the final update for those taking the trip to Edinburgh...... on Monday 13th August...... For our visit to the Records Office at New Register House, we have 27 attending in total, some are starting at 9.00 am, others have opted for the 1.00pm afternoon session. I have 9.00 am seats booked in the East Wing, for the Petrie Genealogy group... you can arrive anytime between 9.00 am and 10.00 am..... After 10.00 am the seat is lost and entry to use the Records cannot be guaranteed ..... the 1.00 pm folks also know that they cannot be guaranteed entry, as this is "peak season" for the Records Office. Do please let the staff know you are with the Petrie Group before they issue your seat number & pass..... Since folks will be arriving at different times we can just meet inside. Further information about the Records Office and a map of how to get there can be found at http://wood.ccta.gov.uk/grosweb/grosweb.nsf/pages/findus You'll notice on the map that the Records Office is situated next door to the National Archives for Scotland...this is where they hold the indexes for Scottish Wills etc. Entry is free, if you are looking for a will....you will need to know the exact death date.... if a will or inventory exists the indexes will give you a little information, you can then if you wish order copies of any that you are interested in, but be aware that this can prove to be very expensive as they charge per page, and you have to wait a few weeks before they can send it to you. Our Evening Dinner in Edinburgh has turned into quite an event in itself.... as we have 37 attending but with it occurring at the same time as the International Festival Fringe, it was difficult to find a place that would take a group booking...!! However I have managed to book Dinner at 6.00 pm in the Carrubber's Restaurant at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh...... and got a great deal with them for a wonderful Table D'hôte Menu...they are offering us 2 courses for 9 pounds 95 pence, or 3 courses for 14 pounds 95 pence..... !!! See their website at http://www.crowneplazaed.co.uk/dining_entertainment.html All venue's are situated perfectly for us to be able to walk from SRO, onto the Royal Mile to the Crowne Plaza, and then onto Edinburgh Castle for the Tattoo at 9.00 pm. Everyone has organised their own tickets for the Military Tattoo, so we will likely say our goodbyes at the Gates of Edinburgh Castle, and wave to each other throughout the show !!!!! :o) Despite it being our Summer time.....it can get cold at night .... some visitors to the Tattoo have been known to arrive with Travel Rugs...Big Coats, Umbrella's and a Thermos.... but it's worth it !!! :o) I cannot find any information on location of car parking facilities in Edinburgh City Centre, and metered parking would be unsuitable and very expensive for the day....perhaps someone else on the List could give best advice ?? Well that's it...the Final, Final Update.... just need you all to turn up now !! :o) Although whilst sending these out I have discovered some have left and are here in Scotland already..... woops !!! :o) I'll get copies made up for them.... :o) Meanwhile, have a safe & pleasant journey.... See you soon !!! :o) Cheerio the noo Norma
Hello to the Petrie Clan: How I wish I could join all of you for "The Gathering!" As I have told Norma, I have a long-standing commitment to be in Northern Maine to visit an elderly aunt of my wife next week. Our whole family (children and grandchildren) have had this time blocked out for months now. I wish you all the most wonderful time and one in which you find direct relationships as well as more information about your ancestors. I sent Norma a small booklet about the James Petries of Arbroath. It chronicles much of what I know about my great grandfather and grandfather, both of whom were named James. In addition to data about them, I included pictures of current generation folk and some memorabilia of Arbroath from the 1930s. So even though I cannot be there in person, at least I will be represented in part. I hope some of you find my booklet interesting and perhaps even useful. I too support the notion of having digital camera shots taken during the festivities. It would be wonderful to have pictures posted on the website for those of us who cannot attend in person. And to Norma and her dedicated team of planners and hard workers, I send my hearty compliments for creating an event that promises to be quite wonderful. All the best, Bruce Arnold 244 Wencin Terrace West Chester, PA 19382 Phone: 610-429-9469 Fax: 610-431-0264 [email protected]
Alas, Barbara, We are not able to attend the gathering ourselves. However it would be nice to meet you and talk "Petrie" sometime. My e.mail is [email protected] Sincerely, Bill Taylor, Waterville, Maine U.S.A.
Hi all Petries - The closer to the Gathering the sadder I get that I will not be there. I do hope that you all have a great time and please think of all of us "cousins" that are unable to join you. To the couple who live in Waterville, Maine I hope that we can meet sometime and you can tell me all about your trip. I travel from Brewer to Wiscasset (my home town) fairly often and could meet you somewhere in Waterville for a coffee and chitchat. Hi gang We are getting pretty excited about the trip in only 7 more days for my aunt and myself. I thought maybe we could do a roll call on who all is going. Janine
Hi Gang I received the undernoted enquiry a wee while ago, and just recently a scanned copy of the small water-colour in question. The enquirer is I think following up on it possibly being the work of William Matthew Flinders Petrie, but I do not know if he turned his hand to painting also ?? My database shows a number of Wm. M. Petrie's who could all potentially be the artist, but without any further information or a date on the painting it's difficult to know which one he might be.... if anyone can claim this artistic ancestor, do let us know !!! I'll bring the e.mail copy of the water colour to the Gathering. for the noo Norma ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2001 5:42 PM Subject: william petrie > I have a small watercolour [a Venetian scene] signed by Wm.M Petrie.Could it be by the famous member of your family? Hi Bill God help me then...because you should see the "mess" I am sitting in around here !!!! :o) However, having just been subjected to yet another birthday.... and my husband wrongly thinking I was 43 !!! (He will be better soon !! :o) I'll take all the compliments I can get !!! ha ha Many thanks for your good wishes for the Petrie Gathering.... and we'll keep an eye out for Alexander & Georgina !! Hi Folks, Here are the Final Details for our Petrie Family Ceilidh being held on Saturday 11 August at 7.30 pm. Our Ceilidh is a private ticketed event, and we now have a list of around 80 attending, tickets will be available to be collected and purchased from Hazel at the Gathering on Saturday morning between 10 am & 12 noon in the Marryat Hall.... we can still cater for more....so if you want to bring along family or friends at last minute, please just let me or Hazel know. Ticket price is 10 GBP per person. Children under 16 are free. The Ceilidh is being held at South Littleton Farm, Rattray, Perthshire PH10 7HF for a good on-line map showing the location try http://uk5.multimap.com enter the full address, including the postcode (use South Littleton as the "Street" address) a scale of 50,000 is probably best in this instance...you can also click on "directions" to get a detailed description of the route. If you are driving to the Ceilidh, do be careful on the A926 as you turn onto the farm road, it can be a busy road and a bad corner.....please take the car all the way down to the Farm where parking will be available. For those who have already pre-booked the bus trip from Dundee City Centre to take them to and from the Ceilidh, bus tickets can also be collected from Hazel's Ticket Table at the Gathering on Saturday morning at a cost of £4 per person. The bus will uplift all passengers at 7.00 pm from outside the McManus Galleries, Albert Square, Dundee.... again try http://uk5.multimap.com to find the location, and you'll notice it's not too far from the City Square, which you will no doubt know very well by then !!! :o) The bus should arrive at the Ceilidh around 7.30 pm. All seats on the bus have been taken up..... Hazel and Dave Garside who are hosting & organising the Ceilidh, will be delighted to welcome you all to their Home Farm. The Ceilidh will be held in the Barn, and a full Buffet will be available, (so remember NOT to have dinner before the Ceilidh :o) The Caterer is also providing a very reasonably priced Wine, Spirit & Beer Bar (Hazel has mentioned that if anyone has a particular spirit they would like available for the evening please let her know and she will.... if possible.... arrange for it to be available on the bar) The Ceilidh Band will swing into action around 8.00 pm ...so do be ready to Party !!! :o) And of-course anyone willing to come forward and sing a song or do a turn, during the Ceilidh festivities ....will be very warmly received !! :o) The Ceilidh will finish around Midnight, which is also the pick up time for the Bus passengers, who will then be treated to a late night tour of Dundee, as the bus delivers them to their respective Hotels..... !! :o) I hope I've managed to cover most things with regard to the Ceilidh....should anyone have further queries please just drop Hazel or myself a line.... Hi everyone, Just a brief email to wish you all the best for the Petrie Gathering. I am sure all will go smoothly, as it seems to me (from afar) that a lot of effort has gone into preparations for the event, thanks to Norma and her band of helpers. Enjoy each others company. Wish we could be there! Hello Patricia, I haven't forgotten you and the query, but I am trying to get the probabilities straight in my "empty" head. I'll be back on line tomorrow after doing some sorting tonight. The fact is.. that neither of the Margaret Petrie's have the right birthdate for the two you mention and as I have the birthdate from the Family Bible it seems possible that it is neither. I have heard mention of cousins marrying though.. and yet I know for certain that one of her other children married a cousin. Question.. did two of the children marry cousins?? Anyway, I'll do some more looking. You must be starting to get very busy if you leave on Friday, so I had better get into gear. What a time you will have. Gillian, ChCh. NZ
To everyone going to the gathering, have a great time. Perhaps someone will be able to scan some photos and get them on the web for us who have to stay at home. All of you have a safe and hopefully productive (find some rellies) trip and get back to your homes safely. God bless Annette in Dubbo (who will be going to my Dad's 90th surprise birthday party).
To all: Whilst I'm not able to come myself, I do that all the participants from far and wide have a great time and learn about lots of new ancestors and relatives! Tony Gott Shetland
Hello Here are the final details for our Petrie Family Gathering in the Marryat Hall Dundee on Saturday 11 August starting at 10.00 am. If you have indicated that you will be displaying your Petrie Family Tree and memorabilia, please meet in the Marryat Hall, City Square around 10.00 am to set up your Family Displays, have a blether and be ready for the Petrie public at 12 noon. A table or part table as you wish, will be available for your family information and display. We are not permitted to attach anything to the walls of the Hall, but the Hall staff are trying to obtain Vertical Display Boards for our use, however these may be limited in number and are not guaranteed to be available. So I would suggest best to devise your display to be mainly shown on table top. You can of course hang items/notices/family tree's etc from the tables. It would be very much appreciated if you could try to make your display as interesting and eye catching as possible, some suggestions would be, using photographs with descriptions of the people or place etc, or you could highlight as a small poster your main interest Petrie families on a separate sheet. Some of you might hold a variety of records on your particular Petrie relatives, copies of these would be most interesting.....along with any other memorabilia you might have that would have a family or historical interest. A cheap & cheerful method of producing a "stand up display" of your Information Sheets or wee posters, is to sellotape them to the front of old greeting cards... it works a treat !!! :o) Please do not feel you have to "stand by" your table throughout the day, (unless you want to) as we want you to enjoy the Gathering and other displays too !!! :o) Just keep an eye out for anyone obviously engrossed in your display.....they might be a long lost relative !!! Do remember though that if you have anything of particular value to you on your display, always remove it before leaving your table unattended. We will also have a Petrie Information Table, which folks can use to look up a variety of Petrie information, including transcriptions of Petrie bmd certificates, as well as Gravestone Inscriptions & pics, Census Details, etc etc. I am bringing along a couple of PC's and Jim Petrie (Isle of Wight) is bringing his laptop, so we can have access to the Petrie of Scotland database and some of the information downloaded from our website, these will initially be manned by Jim Petrie, Wilma Gall & Helen Peacock. But they will likely need some willing volunteers to take over from them at some point during the Gathering, so please feel free to offer on the day. If you have anything at all that you feel would be useful to add to the Petrie Information table, please do bring it along. Stephen Baker has devised a "Petrie Visitors Info Form" which the Petrie public may complete if they wish to pass on details of their Petrie connections, these forms will be made available as they enter the Gathering, so even if they do not find a Petrie connection on the day, we can enter them into the database and may be able to pass on further family details and connections at a later date. It would be helpful if you could wear your Name Badges at the Gathering too.... for our own benefit and for the public so they can spot group members amongst those at the Gathering. Hazel will be manning the Ticket Table between 10 am & 12 noon, for those of you who have to collect & purchase their Ceilidh Tickets and Bus Tickets. We would really like to have this task completed before the public join us....else they might all want a ticket too !!!! :o) Also joining us with their own displays are the Dundee City Archives Dept. They will be setting up a small display in the Hall but since they are located on Shore Terrace which is directly behind the Marryat Hall, they also plan to offer a Guided Tour of their archives to show the vast variety of records they hold..... although not everyone will have a family interest that would be found in the Dundee Archives, the tour will show the type of records and facilities you will find available in Council Archive Departments throughout Scotland. We will also have the Dundee Registrar's Genealogy Unit, with their display of information available from their Genealogy Unit and the Scottish Records Office. They plan to offer demonstrations of how best to find Family History information using the records available in Scotland.... A note of interest Alan Gray one of the Registrar's who is attending to the display...is married to a Petrie !!! :o) Tay Valley Family History Society will also be with us, offering a major selection of their publications for sale on the day or to order for postal delivery, as well as further information on the extensive library, the research facilities and membership benefits available at Tay Valley FHS, in Princes Street, Dundee. Dundee & Angus Tourist Board will also have a display stand available with a large selection of brochures of the various attractions available in the area. Cafe Services will be supplied by Marryat Hall, and will be available from 11.00 am. and throughout the day. The Gathering will finish at 4.30 pm. Entrance to the Gathering will be free of charge, and I suspect that we might also create an interest for many who may not have Petrie connections, but do want to know more about Family History....where possible please accommodate them with further advice, or point them in the direction of the Genealogy Unit Display, Dundee Archives Table or the Tay Valley folks. I am also very pleased to let you know that our Gathering Event has been successful in securing a Grant of £250 to cover "Essential Conference Costs" from the City of Dundee & Angus Convention Bureau. This will cover the cost of the Marryat Hall Hire + 1 steward , our Liability Insurance, Data Protection Act Fee and other incidental expenses. How to get there.... The Marryat Hall is also located in the City Square, Dundee ... for a good on-line map showing the location Use http://uk5.multimap.com/ enter the full address : Marryat Hall, City Square, Dundee and use a scale of 5000 ...you can then print it out for reference. Saturday is a very busy day in Dundee City Centre, unfortunately we will NOT have the Underground Parking Facilities in Crichton Street, that we enjoyed at the Civic Reception A good and relatively cheap car park is available at the New Overgate Shopping Mall which is located directly across the road from the City Square. You can park in the New Overgate car park, and take the lifts onto the 1st floor of the Shopping Mall, turn left and straight ahead for the outside doors. You'll spot the City Square across the road. The location of the Overgate car park entrance is at the junction between Barrack Street, Willison Street and Bank Street, you will find this on the above map too. Well I think that's most things covered for the Petrie Gathering in the Marryat Hall, should anyone have any further queries please just drop me a line..... Oh dear it turned into a "blether" ....didn't it !!!! Woops !!! :o) Cheerio the noo Norma

Not far from the seaward wall is a group of tombstones commemorating ministers of the Episcopal Church. One of these stones marks the resting place of Mr JOHN TROUP of Muchalls, who died in 1776. Mr TROUP, along with his fellow clergymen, Mr JOHN PETRIE of Drumlithie and Mr ALEXANDER GREIG of Stonehaven, defiantly contravened the Act which prohibited Episcopal ministers from preaching to more than 4 persons at a time. Consequently, all three gentlemen were imprisoned in the Old Tollbooth at Stonehaven for six months during the winter of 1748 - 1749. It is said that Mr TROUP made his personal protest by boldly piping the Jacobite air " Over the Water to Charlie " as he was led to prison. Regardless of their confinement, the three clergymen continued to minister to their faithful followers and regularly read matins and evensong to those who gathered below the window of their cell. Baptisms too were conducted, the infants being carried in creels through knee deep water and over rocks to be held up to the bars of the shore side window
Hello Ok folks, here are the final details for the Civic Reception... The Civic Reception will start at 7.00 pm, on Friday 10th August the Reception and will take place in the City Chambers , City Square, Dundee. When the Lord Provost of Dundee, John R. Letford J.P. will welcome our Petrie of Scotland Genealogy Group to the City of Dundee. A small Wine & a Finger buffet will be served, when we will all have the opportunity to introduce ourselves and have a chat with Provost Letford and his staff and of course with each other !! :o) We will also have a guided tour of the City Chambers and learn of some of the Civic history of the City. We have 80 people attending the reception....and it would be very much appreciated if everyone could bring along and wear a Name Badge showing your name and where your from...... Usually a Civic Reception lasts around 1 hr 30 mins, although I suspect ours might take a bit longer !! :o) How to get there.... The City Square in Dundee is in the Centre of the city and is well signposted, but please note that the City Square and surrounds are pedestrianised area's. Car Parking for approx. 30 cars should be available for us in the Private Underground Car Park located in Crichton Street, you can then use the stairs on Crichton Street for quick access to the City Square..... alternatively some on-street parking is available nearby and there are also a couple of Public Car Park's available within walking distance. For a good on-line map showing the location of the City Chambers and Crichton Street for Car Parking Use http://uk5.multimap.com/ enter the full address: City Chambers, City Square, Dundee and use a scale of 5,000... you can then print it out for reference. To see a webcam view of the City Square, Dundee at http://www.angusanddundee.co.uk/home.htm use the "Quick Access" Link and select Dundee click on "look round Dundee City Centre" (although it's an old pix and some of the landmarks have changed !!) Also on the same page you can select the Dundee City Centre Heritage Trail.... and see a photograph of the City Square, showing the Arches leading to the City Chambers this picture was taken just outside the Marryat Hall. !! The website at http://www.angusanddundee.co.uk/home.htm is excellent for further information on Dundee & Angus, it's worth having a good look around it for useful information for all visitors to the area. I'll be at the City Chambers from 6.30 pm with the Invitation Tickets for the few folks who have asked to pick them up from me on the night....all others who are attending should have already received them by post. If not please e.mail me at [email protected] I'll also have a wee stash of blank name badges & spare invitation tickets in my bag for anyone who might misplace or forget them during their travels....so please do not worry in that event. :o) I think that's most things covered for the Civic Reception, should anyone have any further queries please just drop me a line.... See you there ...... !!!! :o) Cheerio Norma
