    1. [Petrie-Scotland] Petrie Gathering
    2. Jim Petrie
    3. I just wanted to thank Norma and Hazel plus all their families and helpers for the fantastic job they did in setting up and running the Gathering and Ceilidh. It all must have been a tremendous amount of work and I know I enjoyed both immensely. I also got a couple of interesting leads at the gathering which I will follow up as well as increasing my knowledge of the broader Petrie clan. Great to put faces to names too. The Origins of the Name Petrie went like hotcakes so I am attaching a copy for all subscribers. Once again, thanks to all. Jim Petrie, Isle of Wight.

    1. [Petrie-Scotland] Looking for family history...
    2. I am looking for history notes on our family's history and emmigration from Scotland to upstate New York. My great grandfather was William Petrie who married Afra Sexton Petrie. They had 10 children. My grandfather was George Sexton Petrie (1883-1930) who married Alice Hilton. My father was LaFayette Petrie (1911-1970) who married Doris Quinn. Hope with the fine gathering in Scotland I can find out more about our family's history. Thank you...Dorla Long [email protected]

    1. [Petrie-Scotland] The Gathering
    2. I, too, am reading each report with enthusiasm and jealousy! I so wish I could have been there!!! But, like Barbara, even had I made the plans, a family emergency would have kept me home. My Dad had quadruple by-pass surgery on the 10th and is not progressing as expected. I am already saving for the next one. Norma, do take a break. It sounds like you out did yourself and I certainly hope that you will spear head The Gathering of 2006. Keep those reports coming. I can't wait to hear if I can graduate from the ranks of "Orphan". 3. Hi gang My trip across the pond in now over with :( but I have to tell you it was a GREAT trip. I can't wait for the next one, which some of us thought should be in 5 years. The work that Hazel & Norma and their families did to put this all together was unbelievable. Hazel's barn looked wonderful for the Ceilidh ( for those who still can't figure out how to pronounce it, try KAY LEE). The work that everyone put into the gathering on the 11th. was great. So many family trees and Norma had so much information for all of us to check out it was WOW!!!! It was great meeting everyone and putting faces to all those names. I also got to meet my cousin, Robert from Orkney, and the 4 of us spend the weekend together and had a great time. Well my husband is about to take me out for breakfast, I don't think he knows how to shop for food while I'm away, so I will get some pictures to our site later. Just wanted to thank Norma and Hazel again for all their hard work and to tell everyone to get those piggy banks ready for the next one. Janine

    3. HI Norma, Am enjoying all of the reports of the gathering, especially yours which is so complete. Perhaps it is time now for you to take a nice rest. Don't want to hear any bad reports regarding your health. So take heed AND REST!!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes, things happen for a reason and if I had gone to Scotland last week I would not have been available to my youngest sister whose husband died very suddenly on the morning of the 8th which just happened to be my birthday. (Last year I was in Aberdeen on that day - a memorable occasion). His death was quite a shock to all of us - he was 69. His daughter, who was extremely close to her Dad is expecting her first child on Sept. 2nd. We feared that she might go into premature labor but so far so good. I don't believe she will make it to the 2nd, however. She is a petite little thing, normal weight less than 100 lbs. Anxiously awaiting more reports of the festivities. 3. Hi Gang, ...well I've linked up my PC again and am back on-line finally !! And now catching up with a major pile of e.mails.... !!! But thought I would pop in with a quick run down of the events as they happened.... Delighted to let you all know that the Petrie Gathering went down a treat, and we all thoroughly enjoyed meeting each other and finally putting a face to some of the names on our list.... many of our members are still on holiday in Scotland touring all over, and I hope they will let the list know all about their trip and the Gathering when they return.... All the events were very successful and with coverage in the local Dundee, Forfar, Arbroath and Orkney newspapers (those are the ones I know or have heard of) the Petrie public response was very good.... many Petrie's came along and discussed their family history with our group members who were displaying at the Gathering, and I do hope they will share those stories and finds with us here on the list. I notice first pix have been posted to our website already, by Hazel showing the Ceilidh in full swing, and I know many more will follow shortly as folks return home.... The Civic Reception was well received and we all thoroughly enjoyed meeting each other for the first time. The hospitality of the Lord Provost and his staff was excellent, and we also were treated to the "5 bob tour" of the City Chambers which delved into the civic history of Dundee. Saturday morning was wet.... but did not dampen our spirits as we prepared our Family Display's for the Petrie public...the hall was well decorated with Petrie information throughout on our tables and boards. The displays were wonderful and many thanks go out to all who displayed their Petrie details and assisted and helped in so many ways on the day. The newspaper coverage not only brought in a lot of visitors to the Gathering but a good many telephone and e.mail enquiries too.... and I now have a major pile of details from Petrie's who wish to find out more about their family history, I also notice I have quite a few "live" connections to pass on to related list members !!!! :o) Since the Gathering we have had 8 new members join this list already .... a warm welcome goes out to them all, and many thanks to those who have already posted their known Petrie details, I hope the others will follow soon. Meanwhile I have a number of e.mail addresses to contact via the visitors forms I received and will contact them all shortly to invite them onto the list too.....so look out for more new members joining our Petrie gang over the next few days !!! The Ceilidh on Saturday night was great fun, and Hazel & Dave and their helpers Monica, Lesley & Paul, as well as the caterer and the band did a wonderful job in making us all feel very welcome, and providing a lovely evenings entertainment with a wonderful buffet.... Tay Valley FHS opened their doors to us on Sunday..... a few folks turned up, but I think most were probably exhausted with the events of the previous 2 days !! We were offered full use of the facilities and a tour of their extensive library....and all had a good "blether" over coffee !!! :o) Monday was our day at SRO....yet again the weather let us down, but a few of us managed to put in a full day's research.....before heading to the Crowne Plaza on the Royal Mile for a lovely meal....we then donned our raincoats and headed for a soggy but excellent performance at the Tattoo !!! :o) I hope all our members who attended will post to the list to let you all know about their experience of the Gathering.....my sincere thanks go to them, one and all, for all their wonderful efforts, and for making our Petrie Gathering such a memorable experience !!! :o) Cheerio the noo Norma :o)

    1. [Petrie-Scotland] Petrie lineage
    2. So far, I have been able to trace my ancestry back to 1808 in Dundee. My ggggf was David Petrie who married Janet Mitchell. They had 7 children, all boys, named Robert 1808, William 1811, David 1812, George 1814, James 1816, James P, 1820 and John 1822. David was my gggf and he married Margaret Miller in 1834 in Dundee. They had 4 children, John Miller 1836, George 1840, David 1842 and William 1851. He married a 2nd time 1853 to Elizabeth Cuthbert and they had 5 children named Mary Ann 1858, James 1861, Betsy Kennedy 1863, Robina 1866, and Harry George 1874. My ggf was William and he married Margaret S. Bruce in Monifeith in 1875 and they had 4 children named William Peddie 1877, Bruce 1878, Ethel Mary 1880 and Theodore Clive 1885. My gf was Bruce and he married my gm Mary Smith Matthew in 1905 in Dundee. They had an illegitimate child, Bruce Matthew, my father, born in St. Andrews in 1901. Subsequently they had three other children, William, Christian Christie and Margaret. Thus far, I have been able to find a cousin, James Petrie, living in London, and we have been corresponding. If there are any more kin out there, I would be grateful hearing from you. Till then. Cheerio. - Bruce Petrie Matthew, Jr.

    3. Greetings to All. My name is Chris Thorpe and I'm researching Petries on my wife's side of the family. Some of the information I've gathered comes from the IGI and some from family and other sources. Here's where I'm at: John Petrie b ~1794 m. Anne Wisely b. ~1798 around 1819. Both were from Insch, Aberdeen There were 5 children (Janet 1820, Anne 1825, Mary 1829, Agnes 1831, George 1833). All sailed to Canada in 1850. John died on the voyage and was buried at sea. Settled at Garafraxa township in Wellington County where George ran the farm. Agnes married John Moffatt on May 25, 1854 and this is the line from which my wife is descended. George married Sarah Sandy in 1861 and they had 8 children (Anne 1861, George 1865, John 1865, Maria 1869, Henry William 1871, Albert 1873, George Alexander 1879, William ??) It is the siblings of Agnes and George and George's descendents that I have no idea about. If there is anyone out there that is part of this Petrie family I'd love to here from them. 2. Pat and Bill
    3. Dear Norma, We have now returned home from Dundee to get ready for our family holiday at the end of this week!! We could not stay on for the Record Office and Tattoo visits because of that, and do hope that everyone had a great time. As far as the 'Gathering' functions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday are concerned we had some excellent and most enjoyable times. All your arrangements plus those of your helpers/ associates/ assistants etc went like a dream. I am sure that all those who attended will remember the occasion for a long time, we certainly will. We met so many nice people, most of whom were Petries, of course, and were able to share experiences of both success and failure in finding some of our elusive ancestors. Having a second cousin whom we knew nothing about walk in on Saturday afternoon and identify himself as another great grandson of 'my' great grandfather was the icing on the cake. He has already given us some more 'relative' information and we have been able to tell him much about the family of which he was not aware. Once again sincere thanks for all your efforts. Pat and Bill Petrie

    2. Hazel Harris Garside
    3. Hi Folks, Back on line after a wonderful, but hectic, weekend. It was great to meet so many Petries from all around the world and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. Our thanks to all who were there for making the Ceilidh such a good night and especially to Norma for making it all possible. I thought you might be interested in this report from the local paper in Blairgowrie dated Saturday, 11 January 1908 which was sent to me last year by Heather Johnson - "At Ballinloan Farm last Friday night Mr & Mrs JOHN PETRIE entertained a number of neighbours and friends to a supper and dance. After a hearty repast dancing was engaged in until the early hours. Mr P Stewart made a capable MC. Excellent music was supplied on violin by Messrs Steele, Cameron and PETRIE. Songs were rendered by Misses Cameron and Messrs PETRIE and Fell" The JOHN PETRIE referred to will be JOHN REID PETRIE b.8 May 1861, grandson of JOHN PETRIE & BETSY ROBERTSON. If you look at the web-site you will see how JOHN & BETSY'S ggg-grandchildren are carrying on the musical tradition. Look forward to the next one! Hazel

    3. Hi Derek, I, as well as Heather, wasn't able to go for the Gathering this year. Me too, SOB, SOB. When I was in Scotland last August our group tour many castles, one being Brodie. When I referred to the gentleman who lived there as Mr. Brodie I was quickly told that he should be referred to as "Brodie of Brodie". Are you kin of the Brodies? 3. Hello Derek, Welcome ...... Quite a few of "our" Petries are away from their computers at the moment - attending a Petrie Gathering in Dundee yesterday ... including our leader, Norma. Some of us poor souls have been unable to go, sob sob. You will probably get some good feedback once everyone has returned home. My paternal grandmother was a Petrie - Margaret Gow Forbes Petrie bn 1880, daughter of Alexander bn 1853 nr Blairgowrie. She married (my paternal grandfather) one George Brown Brodie of Blairgowrie. I have a lot of Dundee photographs of ancestors and know that there must be a connection somewhere along the line but have not traced it yet. Do either of my grandparents appear on your trees, I wonder? 2. Derek Petrie
    3. Hello - I'm James Derek Petrie - called Derek. Born Paradise Road, Dundee on 5th November 1942. I am married with one daughter who was recently engaged to be married. My home address is 86 Craighill Drive, Clarkston, Glasgow G76.7TD. My father was James Brodie Petrie - born 1913 in Dundee - died 1993 in Glasgow. She was born in 1907 and was one of 4 daughters Nette, Elizabeth, Mary and Nan - only my mother is alive of the four daughters - aged 94! 3. Hi Karen, Strange to see another Karen Petrie! I am Karen Elizabeth Petrie - here is where is gets funny - my father was Harold Ferguson Petrie born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and his parents were John Ferguson Petrie (born in Scotland) and Pearl Barnett. My grandfather's father was Andrew Petrie born in Scotland and his wife was Jane Ferguson (both of them are buried in Toronto - deceased 1909). My grandfather had siblings that ventured to western Canada but up to know I have not been too successful in finding any connections. I don't believe you and I have the same family tree at this point anyway but wanted to say welcome. Many of the Petrie researchers are in Scotland right now so I am sure you will see some replies once they are back at their computers. As you can see so many of the names used were the same and this makes it very difficult to trace in some cases. My 14 year old son is presently in White Rock BC...visiting some distant family - Good luck with your research and if you and I happen to find a connection I would be delighted! If per chance, any of you have some connective information, I would be greatly appreciative. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 12, 2001 6:01 PM Subject: PETRIE-SCOTLAND-D Digest V01 #198

    2. Thank you Murray for that information. Mary Williamson, widow of David, is the oldest that I have found on my tree, down through Thomas. I think there should have been another son, James born 1804. Would you have any more information in your old papers :o) I have been at a dead-end for ages. In reference to the 'The Muster Roll of Angus' film, I have had a read of it at my FHC and it is a great read. I may have a connection in it but possibly impossible to prove. I am going to write to the CD_Book people to see if they can copy it. It contains hundreds of photos. Best to all at the gathering Denis Cheers from [email protected] THE TOP END OF DOWN UNDER HUMPTY DOO NT AUSTRALIA
