The events all went without a hitch, congratulations to the organisers. Everyone enjoyed themselves and some of us found new relations. On the Saturday when the hall was opened to the public, we had four generations of our family come in. Richard Petrie, his mother Elizabeth who is 80, Richards son Richard and his Grandson Cameron. Even better they still live at "Bankton Park", Kettlebridge, Fife which is where my G.G.G. Grandfather and his family lived. Can you imagine the thrill of knowing you are walking where your ancestors worked and lived. Not far up the road in Ceres we found the farm "Freelands" that my G. Grandfather Robert Petrie owned, we have photos of the farm as it was in 1903 when my G. Parents celebrated their 50th. Wedding Anniversary. The present owner was pleased to have a copy and surprised at how little change there was to the buildings in 100 years. Clare Nicolls family owned the farm before my family bought it. We were lucky to also meet Ivor Normand at the dinner before going to the Tattoo, Ivor is a 5th Cousin from my G.G.G. Grandfathers second marriage to Margaret Wilkie. Enough of our success I hope all those that attended found some additional information, to those that could not be there I am sure we will all share our new information with you. Thanks again to Norma for all her efforts. Russell Addison & Deborah Harmes. --part1_105.80bfc7f.28b27df1_boundary--

    3. Hi gang Welcome to all our new members. I am sure that we have some new people and old just lurking so I'd thought I'd post my interests again. My great grandfather John Petrie came from the island of South Ronaldsay in the Orkney Islands, born August 11, 1845. He moved to the Niagara area, Ontario, Canada sometime between 1871 & 1874. I have a database of over 1000 Petrie's from the Orkney Islands. If your family is from either the islands or Caithness please let me know. Janine

I look forward to spending my spare time catching up on the details on the website. Norma, I think we all agree that you and your helpers should put your feet up and take a well earned rest. If the next gathering is planned for 5 years time I shall certainly start saving now. Once again, well done and I'm sorry that I didn't get to make it. 1. [Petrie-Scotland] The Gathering
    2. Stephen Baker
    3. Hello Everybody! We have arrived home after our twelve day trip to Scotland. The weather was typically British :0( --- but it was well worth it just to meet many of you in Dundee and - as Norma says - have a wee blether on all matters PETRIE!! I work in local government and found the Friday evening quite a laugh, with the Lord Provost and the tales of Dundee. I think that we managed to link up a few people who called in as connections to Hazel's tree - both Karen and Hazel are Kirkmichael Petries, but we have not yet managed to prove a connection, so we have two parallel lines running alongside, waiting for the link!! The Gathering on Saturday was excellent, with many local people coming along to look. The Ceilidh - yes, it is pronounced KAYLEE and yes, that WAS a real pig!! - was a highlight for us, as we used to belong to a local Scottish Country Dance group here in Doncaster! That evening made us realise just how unfit we are and how much we had forgotten! So much so that we are hoping to rejoin the RSCDS and take up the dancing again :0) We met up with many of you, from the USA - Hi to Garry and Susan from Oregon - and Canada (I think!), as well as from New Zealand (Hello, Herb!) and Australia. Oh yes, some Brits as well!! (Hello, Jim from the IoW). This is not to forget the Stars of the Show, Norma and Hazel, who - with their families - did so much to make it a great time for all of us. THANK YOU BOTH VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!! We even managed to inflict ourselves again on Norma last Thursday, for a marathon blether, talking about all things Petrie and otherwise. Thanks Norma. How is Davie's van now? :0( We had a great time there and will sign up to a future event ................... We shall put some photos on the web when we get ourselves sorted out. Until then, it is ..... Dear Norma, I am enjoying hearing about the Gathering and again thought I would try the Petrie Web site to look at photos etc. I have tried in the past with no success (amateur operator here), but just thought I might check in with you again - realising that you are very busy at present , there is no rush for an answer! I seem to have a problem that when I put in my User name and Password a box comes up that says ... "You Must Have a Value for Password." any thoughts? Gillian, ChCh, NZ

    1. [Petrie-Scotland] Reply to Jeff
    2. Isabel Petrie
    3. Hello JEFF: Well I am sorry to be so late in making my reply, but I have been trying to put this info.together so that it might make some sense, also have been contacting my older Brother in an effort to gain more knowledge. I must admit most of my information has been mainly by word of mouth and remembrance, although I do have some Documentation, regarding my Fathers Birth Cert. and Grandfather & Grandmother Marriage Certification. Anyway Jeff, here goes, I am David Windsor Petrie, born July 25th,1936 at Neelin Manitoba,I now am living in Winnipeg,Manitoba,at 51 Drogue Drive, Postal Code R3V 1M3,telephone number (204) 269-1979. I am married with three grown children, one boy and two girls,I also have three Grand-daughters belonging to my two daughters. I served seven years with the Royal Canadian Navy, then spent twenty-nine years with the Winnipeg Police force. I have an Older Brother WILLIAM born June 18th 1925,an older sister MARY,born January 7th 1927,and a younger Sister GLADYS Theresa, born June 18th 1939,all live in this area. So much for me,I would also like to hear about you and since we must be of some relationship ,perhaps can correspond or maybe even visit. NOW, from what I gather my Great-Grand-Father was William PETRIE,married to a K/Catherine WRIGHT,from there I only know, that their ( son ) My Grand-Father William PETRIE born ?,?,1862 ,in Scotland,Died in New York City,USA.?,?, 1935.There is a telegram with this information that I am trying to locate in the belongings of my Mother & Father, but we had a house fire some time back and they may now be lost. On October 21st 1887 he married my Grand-Mother Elizabeth Ellen PRINCE,in Aberdeenshire Scotland, she was born ?.?.1860/61,Sheffield,Yorkshire,England.I have nothing to indicate where or when she died.My Grandfather immigrated to New York City,USA,sometime around 1922,where he lived with a Daughter,I have never heard whether my Grandmother was deceased,or if they were separated, but she did not come to the USA with him. At one time I thought I had the order of their children's birth but later found that I did not,as I thought that my father was the oldest, but he had a Sister who was older Elizabeth P. Petrie, born 1898,in Aberdeen, died I believe 1968,in New York City,USA,where she had immigrated around 1920 to 1922 and married Charles WILKENS. The next child according to my information was MY FATHER ,Thomas PETRIE,born April 2nd 1889,at 27 North Castle,Shed Banff,Scotland. Then there was a Sister Isabella PETRIE, born ?,she marries a George FORBES,of Aberdeen Scotland ,the also immigrated to New York in the early 1920,my Grandfather lived with here and her husband in New York for a number of years. She and her family later returned to live in Aberdeen Scotland where she died on July 18th,1961. Her children were George FORBES Jr. and Joseph FORBES. There was also some indication of a child by the name of Catherine but I have never been able to confirm that, there was also some indication that two other children may have been deceased at a very early age during a Flu Epidemic. There was also a child by the name of James PETRIE,born in Aberdeen Scotland date unknown,he remained in Scotland where he passed away December 8th,1960.I have no information as to who he was married to but the children were as follows , Ann GREEN (f) ,Jeannie McKENZIE(f),Peggy LOBBAN (f) Deceased,Mary GRAY (f),Alex PETRIE (m),Ella COYLE (f) John PETRIE (m),James PETRIE Jr. (m) & Helen FORMAN (f) all these believed to be residing in or around Aberdeen Scotland,if still living. There are a number of other names I do not understand the connections to these are Catherine D MALLIN (f),Andrew,Elizabeth,Archibald & Charles DUNCAN, Mina D. WHITLEY & George DUNCAN also believed to be of Scotland. These names all were given by a Lawyer,as the results of the estate settlement of my Father's Youngest Brother WALTER PRINCE PETRIE,Single, living in New York City, where he died in 1959 Now back to my Father,he was born to William Petrie and Elizabeth Ellen PRINCE.April 2nd 1889,(his father William was a Journeyman Cooper). On growing up he spent some Fifteen Years in the Imperial British Army (Cameron Highlanders his Re. # 8166,He saw service 4&1/2 years in India,During the First WW served Eleven months in Russia,Served France & Greece, and was wounded in both legs in 1916. He was very Athletic being a member of the Tug-of-war Teams,Field Hockey,Cricket, and Soccer.Played Soccer in International games against England & Wales at Malta, also as member of the Cameron Highlanders Regimental team won the Madras Cup,also held Championship of India three years in a row. In 1920 he came to Canada, where he resided in Toronto Canada at 98 Mcaul St. from where he immigrated to New York City USA.in Oct. 1922. Here he married my Mother Mary Elizabeth BOURQUE, in 1924. At the end of 1928 he ,my Mother, older Brother Wm.,older Sister Mary, returned to Manitoba Canada, where they took up farming. Here myself and my younger Sister were born,my parents farmed in the area until his death from War Wound Complications in April 13th,1951,at the Deere Lodge Military Hospital,Winnipeg ,Manitoba. My brother still farms the home place,Mother also passed away at 101 years June 18th 2000,the rest of the families still reside in Manitoba. Well JEFF that's my history in a nut shell, true to the best of my recollection, that of my Brother & Sister, and any documents we have.I am sorry not to have a great deal of information on my Grandmother Elizabeth Ellen PRINCE. Hope this may be of some interest to you and hope to communicate more with you in the future. My main objective so far has been an effort to locate living relatives, anywhere, but in particular cousins we have lost track of in Scotland

    3. Hello Dorla, I'm not on your "tree" but, as with all the members of Norma's site, we are all Petrie "cousins" really ....... My reason for making contact is - have you discovered the Ellis Island site? Where you might find your Petries entering the USA .... One kind site member (apologies to that member for not remembering your name! and many belated thanks!) notified us of the address: http://www.ellisislandrecords.org The site has certainly helped me in my research. 3. Hi Chris, I am not too sure about the Petrie bit. My brother now lives in the Garafraxa area that you refer to on our family farm from many years ago but this particular farm was connected to my mother's family not the Petrie's. My best friend is a Moffatt (with two t's) and I will pass this along to her to see if there happens to be any connection. Good luck Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: cthorpe <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 14, 2001 10:47 PM Subject: [Petrie-Scotland] Petries in Ontario > Greetings to All. > > My name is Chris Thorpe and I'm researching Petries on my wife's side of the > family. 1. [Petrie-Scotland] Gathering
    2. ele 1954
    3. Hi All Back home in England after a very busy weekend. It was great putting faces to the names I have seen so often on the internet. Unfortunately I only made it to the Gathering on the Saturday afternoon, but thoroughly enjoyed myself, everyone was so friendly. The rest of my weekend was spent visiting relatives or researching other family members in my family tree, as all my descendants are from the Arbroath area. Thanks to Norma and her gang for giving us such a welcome. Eleanor Atkinson __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Doria, Do you know approximately when your first Petrie arrived in NY? And when you say "upstate," do you have any more specific location available to you? My gg-grandfather, John PETRIE, who had a brother, William F. PETRIE, arrived in Rosendale, Ulster County NY with his parents and siblings sometime between 1812 (when his youngest sibling was born in Scotland) and 1830 (when he was married to Jane RONK in NY). If your William is the brother to my John, then I actually have some interesting information on him, including artifacts and a photo of William's son, Alexander Phemister PETRIE. I would be happy to share any of this with you or anyone else in the PETRIE group. Warmest regards, April Canaday ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 16, 2001 9:55 AM Subject: [Petrie-Scotland] Looking for family history... > I am looking for history notes on our family's history and emmigration from > Scotland to upstate New York.
