What a pleasant surprise this morning, 10 items in my Petrie folder! I thought I would re-state my areas of interest for any new researchers joining the list. My Petrie tree goes back to Murroes, Angus in the mid 1700's before it peters out. Anything anyone has on Murroes for that period on Petrie or Bathie would be of interest. The second area is more recent. My father, James Blairford Petrie grew up in Dundee and always told me I was related to half the city as he had so many cousins. It would be good to link up with just one of these to fill in some gaps. The best point to start from is probably my GGF Charles Petrie who married Elizabeth Blairford on 15th July 1872. Elizabeth was from Stanley. Their Children were: a.. James Blairford Petrie (my GF) b.1889 b.. Charles Murray Petrie b. 1873 c.. Elizabeth Jack Petrie b. 1874 d.. William Smith Petrie b. 1876 e.. John B Petrie b. 1879 f.. Margaret Petrie b. 1881 g.. Bella Petrie b. 1887 h.. Harry Petrie b. 1885 They were all from the Peddie Street area originally. Hello Stephen, I notice that you are also researching COLLIE. My great grandfather was James PETRIE (1843 to 1912) and his parents were Robert PETRIE and Ann COLLIE (1823 to 1901). Ann COLLIE was an interesting lady, also known as Ann COUTTS and Ann STEWART (STUART). Her parents were James COLLIE (about 1781 to 1859) and Isobel (Isabella) CORDINER (CORDNER). Hi Annette: My name is Catherine Stirling Gould, descended from Janet Petrie who is the first entrant on the Scottish GRO as death. Her four sons (she married John Stirling) emigrated to Ontario Canada in 1840, and I am descended from them. Janet died and was buried in Panbride, the family was associated with Monikie and Barrie also.I have a few names of her ancestors but can't access my notes right now. Did a great deal of genealogy work last year but have been too busy of late: did however get to meet Norma when we went to Scotland in 2000; lovely woman. My plan after straightening out our lives (new retirement, big move, new house, mountains of boxes and reams of lists) is to work on genealogy again, and have not got much on the Petries so will get back to the mailing list asap. My line is from Bathgate, Scotland to Toronto, Ontario - my grandfather was William Alexander Petrie (he had 6 or 7 sisters - Mary J., Jessie D., Catherine, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Berthe E. and maybe Anna all born Canada 1876-1887); his father was William Duncan Petrie m. to Mary Trimble. Don't you find it always the same with a surname list, either all or nothing in the email stakes. I find that area lists tend to be busy as they are not defined by one single surname, but open to surnames, locations and ofcourse the general look-ups and basic questions. I will submit my Petrie info again in the hope of a link Annie Petrie b 1927 married James Douglas b 1827 in 1953. James links in with my Riach family, but I know little of the Petrie line. James and Annie had 4 children :- Una, Alison, Christine and Ann all born between 1956 and 1966 in the vacinity of Elgin, Moray. I have marriages for 3 of the girls to Ogg, Donald and Green spouses During my childhood visits to grandad at Rutherhill, outside Lhangbryde there was a Mrs Petrie who lived in a new bungalow just before grandads. Mrs Petrie was an old lady in the 1960's, well I was only about 10 and everyone over 20 was old. She was a nice lady and used to hand reer lambs. Many of us have benefited from the site enormously, have a lot of information, and have probably reached apparent dead ends. I've no doubt that when Norma cannot, understandably, give the site her full attention, it does lose some of its impetus. The database does, of course, provide a rich source of the information that everyone can dip into and get some answers, without necessarily having to raise queries What we really need is some new participants, bringing some fresh data to add to the total and open up some new leads for the rest of us. Hi Laura I am so glad to have another cousin on the list. I don't have a Laura as a granddaughter of John Travis so would love to include your family into the tree. Laura (Laurettta is her real name) and my grandfather Arthur were siblings. I have a lot of information on the family. They lived in Niagara Falls, and Laura was born there. John Petrie never married a Sarah he was married to Margaret Matches from Scotland and they had 1 daughter there. He then came to Canada and later Margaret and their daughter came. They had 2 more daughters and then she died. John then married Loretta (Metler) Coughill who also had 3 daughters. Then with they had 6 more children together 5 boys and Laura. Have you heard of Francis Petrie the historian in Niagara Falls? Well he is also related. There is also a Gerri Speck in the falls who is researching the family. I also have a bit on John Petrie's family from the Orkney Island with lots of thanks to Norma Thain. Did you know that Robert Speck Dr. in Toronto is named after your Speck family also. Hello everybody. I agree that things have been too quiet. I was searching through one of my Petrie line wills of " the deceased Joseph Petrie lately residing at Gaupieshaugh in the Parish of St Cyrus. " In it he listed all his children and descendants, one of them being his grand daughter described as " Helen Petrie or Irvine wife of Magnus Irvine presently residing in Australia. " ( 1874 ) His children are listed as Daniel Petrie, Isabella Petrie or Strachan, Helen Petrie or Milne, Elizabeth Petrie or Anderson and Ann Petrie. There were also other children who are not listed for some unknown reason at present. Does any one have knowledge of any of them? Murray Nicoll
