The following census entry appears in the 1850 Anderson County census. HN 183 PG 25 Scarbrough, William 56 m farmer VA Margaret 56 f VA Tobias 26 m farmer TN Francis M. 17 m farmer TN Manervy J. 16 f TN I have long suspected that Margaret age 56 is Margaret Peters. I can't prove it (still can't), but I did find Margaret listed on David Scarbrough's web site http://users.ticnet.com/scarbrough/ as Margaret Peters. (This is a fine site, by the way. It focuses on the Scarbroughs, but there are many Peters from Anderson County who are listed.) I wrote to David Scarbrough to ask for sources. He reported that he had had a computer crash a few months back, and lost much reference material. So I was just wondering if anybody out there had a reference for this Margaret to prove that she is a Peters. My suspicions that she is a Peters are based on the following. 1. The Peters and the Scarbroughs moved together from Greenbrier County, VA (now WV) to Anderson County, TN in about 1797. Margaret is married to a Scarbrough and was born in VA. 2. Margaret had a son named Tobias. It seems reasonable to suspect that Tobias Scarbrough might have been named for Tobias Peters, who was part of the Peters-Scarbrough migration in 1797. 3. There are three England families living in HN 180, HN 181, and HN 182, with Margaret maybe-Peters and William Scarbrough living in HN 183. HN 180 is John England and Jane Peters. This argument is a little weak, however, because I think that Jane Peters is not a Greenbrier County Peters. I doubt that Margaret would be the daughter of Tobias Peters. He married Elizabeth Scarborough in 1797 and Margaret was born in 1794. I am not aware of a previous wife for Tobias. However, he was 27 years old when he married Elizabeth Scarborough, so a previous wife would be at least possible. Margaret could be the daughter of Henry Peters, Sr. mathematically. Henry Peters, Sr. married Mary Wiatt in 1788. But I have never seen a Margaret listed as a daughter of Henry. I have suspected that Henry and Tobias are related -- brothers or cousins or something. If Margaret were to be Henry's daughter and if Margaret named a son after Tobias, then it would strengthen the argument that Tobias and Henry were related. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
