I found a letter written to our family in 1968 by Nada Pendergraft of Colton, California. Nada is a descendant of Silas Peters and Ann Powell. Here is an excerpt from Nada's letter as it relates to Thomas Peters of Anderson County, Tennessee and his wife Sarah B. (Jenny England). I have transcribed the letter as faithfully as I can. Also, I have written off for the pension record of Thomas Peters so that I may investigate the documents myself. begin excerpt from letter ---------------- Thomas Peters - pension and war record, #57275 Tenn. Vols. - Capt. L. Oliver - Col. Jno. Brown. Entered October 1813 - disc. 1-15-1814. 101.393 May 1865, 40 Acres Taylor 0 Wm. 43.276, Feb. 20, 1852, File No. WC 2002-1812. A. Cross, Clinton, Tenn. Wm. Peak of Robertsville, Tenn., signers, rec'd 20 acres on 9-28-1850, Wo1. at Anderson Co., East Tenn. Thomas Peters born 1791 in War of 1812 - witnesses were: Wm. Peak and John England (Thomas' father-in-law). Then when Thomas Peters' widow Sarah applies for a pension, John W. and Thomas C. Scarborough sign, Scarborough is Postmaster at Robertsville (think kin also as they are in so many Peters deals). (J.W. might be old Thomas Peters' son-in-law. This paper dated 20 Feb. 1872. Sarah born 1793. Sarah Peters lived Scarbrough, Anderson Co., Tenn, 1872. Her maiden name was Sarah England daughter of John England of Anderson CO., Tenn. Sarah married Oct. 1812 to Thomas Peters. Thomas died Oct. 11 1830/1850?. She signed "X", witnesses were Frances Kirby and Preston W. Shannon (prob. relatives). End excerpt from letter --------------- Here are some comments on my part: 1. A. Cross is probably Alfred Carter Cross, husband of Zipporah Peters and the son-in-law of Thomas Peters and Sarah B. (Jenny) England. 2. John W. Scarborough/Scarbrough is probably the husband of Mary E. Peters and the son-in-law of Thomas Peters and Sarah B. (Jenny) England. 3. Thomas C. Scarborough/Scarbrough is probably the son of John W. Scarbrough and Mary E. Peters, and the grandson of Thomas Peters and Sarah B. (Jenny) England. 4. From census records, I have the birth date of Sarah B. (Jenny) England as 1786/1790. It's interesting that the pension record apparently shows her birth date as 1793. 5. Sarah B. (Jenny) England was the daughter of John England and Vesta Zipporah Choate. 6. I have the date of death for Thomas Peters as 1868. 7. I am not 100% certain of all the ways in which Preston W. Shannon fits into the Peters family. But I run into his name over and over again while researching the Peters and the Scarbroughs of Anderson County, Tennessee. One of his four wives was Sarah Emily Peters, daughter Henry Peters, Jr. So Sarah Emily Peters was the niece of Thomas Peters. resume excerpt from letter ---------------------- When Sarah filed (her pension (#2002) other papers John W. Scarbrough and David M. Shannon signed again. In 1872, signers of her papers were Justice of Peace, Anderson Co., Tenn. was Wm. Scarbrough, and Milly Crofs (Cross), both at Sarah's wedding and was married by their own Samuel Davidson in Anderson Co., Tenn. ca 15 day of Oct. 1812 (a Davidson married Rebecca dau. of James & Rachel (McCart) Peters). End excerpt from letter --------------- Of the names in this second excerpt, the one I am most interested in is Milly Cross. There were many Peters/Cross marriages in Anderson County. I can't place this Milly Cross. But I show a Milly Peters b. about 1795 as the sister of Thomas Peters. I do not show a marriage for Milly Peters, and indeed the only record I have of her is the 1850 Anderson County census which show her with a surname of Peters and living with her father (and Thomas's father) Henry Peters. My interpretation of this census entry is that Milly was a daughter of Henry who never married, but there are (of course) other interpretations that are possible and reasonable. HN 148 PETERS Henry 81 farmer PA Milly 55 VA Katherine 49 TN It makes sense that Thomas's sister Milly was at his wedding in 1812. But I don't know if Milly Peters and Milly Cross were the same person. Can anybody shed any light on Milly?
