I have written before of my three Peters lines in Anderson County, Tennessee. The Peters family in Anderson County was founded by Tobias Peters and Henry Peters who (along with the Scarbroughs) migrated from Greenbrier (now Monroe) County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in about 1797. They moved to Knox County, but the community where they settled became part of Anderson County when Anderson County was created in 1801. Two of my Peters lines go back to the Tobias/Henry Peters migration, one for sure and another one very probable. But my third Peters line is Jane Peters, and I have had trouble linking her to the Tobias/Henry migration. I have suspected her of being born in Rockingham County, Virginia, the daughter of John Peters and Sallie Clay. But the 1850 and 1860 censuses list her as being born in Tennessee. I recently wrote the following to PETERS-L: >I have to admit that Jane's place of birth is listed as >Tennessee in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, but I tend to >mistrust birth places under these circumstances. I also >just realized that I don't have an 1870 or 1880 census >record for Jane Peters and John England. I need to chase >them down. In any case, my Jane Peters died before 1881 >because John England married second Anna Melissa Davis >in 1881. It turned out I hadn't just accidentally missed Jane Peters in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. The family changed counties between 1860 and 1870 (I could have handled that), but the census enumerator misspelled the name in 1870 so they were hard to find. But I have it all now. Let me just review the whole thing. 1839 Anderson County, Tennessee Marriages Jane Peters m. For the ones that say she was born in Tennessee, I suspect the census enumerator just put down Tennessee for the whole family without much thought going into the process. But the North Carolina birth place in the 1880 census does seem credible. It's like they actually asked somebody who knew and actually got an answer. I believe that this suggests very strongly that Jane was not a part of the Tobias/Henry migration of 1797. But who were her parents? I came up with John Peters and Sallie Clay as possibilities based on the fact that John Peters and Sallie Clay had a daughter named Jane who was the right age, and based on the fact that the first daughter of Jane Peters and John England was named Vesta Clay England. It seemed likely to me that Vesta was named after an ancestor, probably a grandmother. You would think that Jane's parents might be living in Anderson County, in 1840. But if so, I can't find any good candidates. Henry Sr. is listed, but he is probably too old to be her father, there is no record I have found of a daughter named Jane in his family, and his children were born in Virginia and Tennessee. Henry Jr. is listed, but his first child for whom I have a record was born in 1823 (Jane Peters was born about 1816), and all his children were born in Tennessee. John W. Peters is listed, but he is younger than Jane. Thomas Peters is listed (son of Henry, Sr.) and he is the right age, but he and his wife Jenny B. (Sarah) England were both born in Virginia and all their known children were born in Tennessee. Wesly Peters is listed (son of Tobias), but he is the same age as Jane. And that's it -- no more Peters in Anderson County in 1840. I first of all offer all this up in case it helps anybody. And secondly, as always I ask if anybody recognizes my Jane Peters.
