    3. The English vs German line is discussed in several pages in the Lutz book, as well as in the other material I am including. #1 -- The English cannot be documented. 3. Thanks Barbara. "Zachariah Peters " has been proven to be Zachariah Parker of Conn. Several years ago the DAR stopped accepting the Zachariah Peters lineage. Ehn I first began my research an uncle handed me a memeographed sheaf of papers re Tunis, saying "I don't think it is right before Tunis". I could not document any of the statements. My husband and I even drove to Petersburg, VA only to find it was not founded by a Peters. The material I am enclosed with the book copy is approx 50 pages of citations on the German and Dutch heretage and all documentation records and researchers. ----- Original Message ----- From: Barbara Lake Peters <barmusic@erols.com> To: <PETERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 05, 2000 2:14 PM Subject: English or Dutch lineage? > I'm sure I have passed this on to some of you... > from David Holman David@holman.globainet.co.uk > "I think you may find the Thomas Dunwood PETERS was in fact Thomas Dykewood PETER. 3. Hi I'm new to this list but the German/Dutch/Engilsh debate has been interesting. I'm searching for Rachel PETERS b. abt. 1826 ENGLAND m. Horatio Nelson ATKINSON b. abt. 1826 N.B., CAN . Her parents are listed as Joshua PETERS and Annie BROWN. In an earlier , more distant, Atkinson generation there is also a Henry PETERS married to Mary STANDING listed their son Henry PETERS married Rowena ATKINSON. This Henry was a traveling Methodist lay preacher. I do believe they are related as we have a gr.aunt named Susan Dorothy Standing Atkinson. Family lore says we are descended from a Lord Standing. The 1871 census for the town of Pictou, N.S., CAN. lists her as being born in Eng. All of the Methodist faith. An 1891 census puts this family in N.B., CAN. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 3. Hi, John: The English lineaege cannot be documented; in fact, most has been proven invalid. The ancestry of Tunis and Francinah Adams Peters is proven by: the family Bible wherein he signed his name as Petters and lists births, deaths, and movement west of his children; 1880 census records for their three surviving children; Hampshire Co., VA land and legal records; Rev. War pension records; Loudoun Co., VA administration records; New Jersey Archives; Hunterdon Co., NJ records. A Tunis descendant married into a Newton family. Tunis's mother was Catherine Quick Peters. Quick is a Dutch name and Tunis is used repeatedly in her ancestry. The original spelling in the Quick family was Thoenis. As early as 1950, researchers were questioning the English lineage. Please try contacting the Linda Davis who posted the query <gene_ous@yahoo.com>. These queries are being forwarded to me by another researcher to share with all of you. Sorry if I have confused all of you. Adrienne Forwarded Message: Subj: William Peters house Date: 03/30/2000 8:37:21 AM Pacific Standard Time From: gene_ous@yahoo.com (Linda Davis) To: PACHESTE-L@rootsweb.com OK Chester-listers, I’m counting on you. I admit I’ve been skulking in the background for quite a while, hoping something would show up for my family. But, till you know who I’m looking for….. I’ve noticed how everyone is always so helpful, and I apologize for the length, but wanted to include all the info, so here goes: While browsing the Chester Co. page, I came across an item listed in historical homes. Peters, William, House Hillendale Rd., Pennsbury Township Mendenhall My 4G & 6G grandfathers were both named William Peters. This taken from letters that a half-gg-uncle of mine (William Preston Peters) wrote to my aunt in the 1950’s & 60’s. I’ve tried to type it in ‘as is’. Note the contradiction in construction date of the house. He would have been about 85 at the time he wrote the following; Quoted from his letter dated Sep. 26, 1955: "First to come to America with William Penn and his Quaker Colony about 1680 was also William Peters, settled at Upland with the Quaker Colony, later removed to Gwynedd, Montgomery County, Penna. His descendants early during the 1700 hundreds removed to Concordville, Delaware County, Penna., where the following generations were born down to my father and his four brothers. The first William Peters above mentioned, had a son Reece Peters, who later had a son William Peters, this last named William Peters, and his wife Susana (Vanderen) Peters, erected 1710 or 1712 a fine large brick residence, brick brought from England via Sailing vessel as ballast, same residence still in perfect condition and stands about a short mile from Chelsea, Delaware County, Penna." And also a letter dated Oct 18, 1956: "Just a note to apprise you, that not until yesterday, had I learned, that with their Sunday issue, dated Sunday, October 6, 1956, The Chester Times, Chester, Penna., published about a half page article, including six quite large pictures of the old Peters residence, near Chelsea, Delaware County, Penna., erected with brick brought from England by my great-great grandfather, William Peters, between 1734 and 1750, the residence in as good condition today as the day it was completed during 1750, after more than a years effort constructing it. By my two great great , my great, and my grandfather, the last referred too, Samuel Fothergill Peters, 1800-1877, wife, Susan Van Deren (Johnson) Peters - 1793-1872 My grandfather Samuel F. Peters, occupied this residence during his entire life, excepting a five year period, during the eighteen-thirties, when he,with his family removed to a location located between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes in New York State. With this five year exception during my grandfathers entire life, the designated premises comprising 140 acres, also included a flour mill, saw mill, fulling mill, clover hulling mill, etc. Following my grand fathers death and settlement of his estate, a Mr. Johnson purchased the entire manufacturing portion of the estate, including the mill dam on Chester Creek. The remainder of the estate remained the property of My uncle William R. Peters heirs for many years, and for many years prior to about thirty years ago, owned by my first cousin Sue VanDeren (Peters) Thatcher, when she disposed of it to Attorney W. B. Harvey, ******, Penna. Mr. Harvey now deceased, and the property now belongs to his son Henry Harvey, who with his family, resides on the property, where he has resided since his marriage twenty-two years ago." Can anyone help me to possibly find if this Peters family home is the same as the William Peters house mentioned on the county page? Any site I can find some history on it? Would you know how I can get a copy of the newspaper article that he mentioned? It was really nice of him to include the exact date, wasn’t it? Also, anyone connected with this family, please get in touch. It’s hard to use my mouse with all my fingers crossed. Thank you all in advance. Linda (Peters) Davis - Armstrong Co., Pa.

    2. PETERS CENSUS RECORDS 1860 TO 1910: By the time the later Census Records were taken, much more information was included on Peters than was the case in the earliest censuses. The focus of census data had shifted from just counting families to giving data on all residents of the United States. The Peters information listed may include the following: every household member's name, age and birthplace (usually only the state), the occupation for those over 15 years of age, the number of persons over 20 years old who could not read and write, whether the individual was married, whether the person attended school within the calendar year, the relationship of each person to the head of the household, the state or country in which the mother and father of each person was born. In the records, you may find information including the month and year that each Peters namesake was born, the year that an immigrant Peters arrived in the United States, their citizenship status, the number of years a Peters couple was married, the number of Peters children born and the number still living at the time. When looking at the later Peters Census Records, please keep in mind that often not all records are presented, and certain limitations exist. The records can contain faulty information, so they should always be considered along with other documents or records you may have on the family. The information that was noted depends on what the Peters interviewed at the time told the census takers. The census takers could have made mistakes in interpreting and recording the information. For example, the age given for each person was often the census taker's guess. Oftentimes other members of the family, or even a neighbor, may have answered the census takers questions. If so, the person may have found it difficult to remember all the ages and the other information about all the people in the household. If the person being interviewed for the census was a newly arrived immigrant who didn't speak English very well, the data recorded by the census taker could easily have misspellings and misinterpretations. ----1860 Connecticut---- Name: Delia Age: 4 Sex: Female Birthplace: CT Month Of Death: April Cause Of Death: Croup County: Hartford ----1860 District Of Columbia---- Name: Sicely Age: 3 Sex: Female Birthplace: DC Month Of Death: Feb Cause Of Death: Consumption County: Washington ----1860 Delaware---- Name: James Name: Mary Age: 1 Age: 55 Sex: Male Sex: Female Birthplace: DE Birthplace: MD Month Of Death: Nov Month Of Death: Feb Cause Of Death: Scarlet Fever Cause Of Death: Consumption County: New Castle County: Kent ----1860 Georgia---- Name: J. 2. PETERS CENSUS RECORDS 1790 TO 1850: The Peters Census Records open up all kinds of possibilities that will help you to reconstruct the history of fellow Peters. In 1790 theUnited States took the first nationwide census. Although the census was at first intended as only a national "head count," it was later used by the government to collect other information. Census records have become a boon for genealogists because they provide statistics from every ten years since the first one in 1790. The information about Peters that research has discovered from the 1790 census was originally gathered United States marshals. The marshals collected information about all households and individuals in the United States in a house-to-house canvass. The law required that every household be visited and that the completed census schedules be posted in "two of the most public places within [each jurisdiction], there to remain for the inspection of all concerned." The marshals were required to list the members of each household, and to put them into one of the following categories: head of the family, "free white males" of 16 years and upward (to assess the country's industrial and military potential), "free white males" under 16 years, "free white females," "all other free persons, by sex and color," and "all slaves." The early Peters Census Records list only names for the Peters heads of households. From these early censuses we can only speculate that a male listed between the ages of 10 and 15, for example, was a son of the head of the household, or that a slave listed would later take on the Peters name. While these early Census Records do not list the names of every household member, they at least tell of the family's residence. Using this information it may be possible to reconstruct the family, keeping in mind that any of the individuals unnamed might be boarders, servants, or someone else unrelated. The information available about Peters from each census is varied, and often not all records are presented. Generally, the details improve as the government required that more information be collected in each successive census. Keep in mind that in every national census some people are missed. ----1850 Alabama---- Name: Cornelius Age: 25 Sex: Male Birthplace: GR Month Of Death: Aug Cause Of Death: Congefever County: Mobile ----1850 California---- Name: Sam Age: 30 Sex: Male Birthplace: NY Month Of Death: Sep Cause Of Death: Dilirium County: Calaveras ----1850 District Of Columbia---- Name: Rebeca Age: 6 Month Sex: Male Birthplace: DC Month Of Death: May Cause Of Death: Diarrhea County: Washington ----1850 Delaware---- Name: Daniel Age: 55 Sex: Male Birthplace: MD Month Of Death: Feb Cause Of Death: Bill Fever County: Kent ----1850 Florida---- Name: John Age: 45 Sex: Male Birthplace: NJ Month Of Death: Sep Cause Of Death: Yellow Fever County: Hillsborough ----1850 Georgia---- Name: John Age: 1 Month Sex: Male Birthplace: GA Month Of Death: Aug Cause Of Death: Unknown County: Randolph ----1850 Illinois---- Name: Mary Age: 12 Sex: Female Birthplace: IL Month Of Death: Sep Cause Of Death: Scarlatina County: Vermillion ----1850 Indiana---- Name: Christian Name: Elizabeth Name: John Age: 40 Age: 7 Age: 43 Sex: Male Sex: Female Sex: Male Birthplace: GR Birthplace: IN Birthplace: MD Month Of Death: July Month Of Death: March Month Of Death: March Cause Of Death: Gravel Cause Of Death: Pneumonia Cause Of Death: Pleurisy County: Warrick County: Jachson County: Floyd Name: John Age: 1 Sex: Male Birthplace: IN Month Of Death: May Cause Of Death: Infl Brain County: Jackson ----1850 Louisiana---- Name: Peter Age: 38 Sex: Male Birthplace: ME Month Of Death: Jan Cause Of Death: Cholera County: Orleans ----1850 Michigan---- Name: Abia Name: Meritte Name: Winn Age: 37 Age: 32 Age: 4 Month Sex: Female Sex: Male Sex: Male Birthplace: EN Birthplace: EN Birthplace: NG Month Of Death: June Month Of Death: Feb Month Of Death: Sep Cause Of Death: Inflammatn Cause Of Death: Unknown Cause Of Death: ** County: Lenawee County: Washtenaw County: Monroe ----1850 Ohio---- Name: Ann Name: Eli Name: Francis Age: 70 Age: 1 Age: 4 Sex: Female Sex: Male Sex: Male Birthplace: VA Birthplace: OH Birthplace: NG Month Of Death: Sep Month Of Death: Oct Month Of Death: Dec Cause Of Death: Consumption Cause Of Death: Fever Cause Of Death: Sore Throat County: Hancock County: Stark County: Pickaway Name: Franklin Name: Henry Name: John Age: 17 Age: 32 Age: 1 Sex: Male Sex: Male Sex: Male Birthplace: OH Birthplace: GR Birthplace: OH Month Of Death: Dec Month Of Death: Dec Month Of Death: July Cause Of Death: Accident Cause Of Death: Scarlet Fever Cause Of Death: Summer Comp County: Pike County: Hamilton County: Hamilton Name: John Name: John Name: Mary Age: 3 Age: 7 Age: 3 Sex: Male Sex: Male Sex: Female Birthplace: OH Birthplace: OH Birthplace: GR Month Of Death: Sep Month Of Death: July Month Of Death: June Cause Of Death: Flux Cause Of Death: Cholera Cause Of Death: Brain Infl County: Hamilton County: Montgomery County: Hamilton Name: Oliver Age: 6 Sex: Female Birthplace: OH Month Of Death: Feb Cause Of Death: Infl Brain County: Hamilton ----1850---- Name: Henry Age: 65 Sex: Male Birthplace: PA Month Of Death: July Cause Of Death: Apoplexy County: Lawrence ----1850 Tennessee---- Name: Catharine Name: Sarah Age: 63 Age: 1 Month Sex: Female Sex: Female Birthplace: TN Birthplace: TN Month Of Death: Aug Month Of Death: Aug Cause Of Death: Heartdisea Cause Of Death: Unknown County: Carter County: Knox ----1850 Texas---- Name: John Age: 1 Sex: Male Birthplace: TX Month Of Death: Aug Cause Of Death: Unknown County: Lamar ----1850 Virginia---- Name: Bluett Name: George Name: Graham Age: 60 Age: 3 Age: 6 Month Sex: Male Sex: Male Sex: Male Birthplace: VA Birthplace: VA Birthplace: VA Month Of Death: April Month Of Death: Feb Month Of Death: Aug Cause Of Death: Unknown Cause Of Death: Catarrh Cause Of Death: Unknown County: Rockbridge County: Alexandria County: Alexandria Name: Lucy Name: Martha Name: Mary Age: 20 Age: 56 Age: 6 Sex: Female Sex: Female Sex: Female Birthplace: VA Birthplace: VA Birthplace: VA Month Of Death: April Month Of Death: July Month Of Death: March Cause Of Death: Braininflam Cause Of Death: Consumption Cause Of Death: Catarrh County: Nelson County: Norfolk County: Alexandria ----1850 Vermont---- Name: Charlotte Name: Mary Age: 43 Age: 17 Sex: Female Sex: Female Birthplace: VT Birthplace: VT Month Of Death: Feb Month Of Death: Oct County: Chittenden County: Franklin
