    1. [PETERS] John (Jack) Frederick Peters
    2. Brian Larimore
    3. I am looking for information on John(Jack)Frederick Peters. According to my family notes he was born 24 Oct 1876 in Chicago, IL. He married Lena Marie Harworth on 22 Feb 1903 and died 26 Oct 1952. John's mother was Marie Kruse, born 12 Sept 1849 in Saint Annen, Germany and died 1918 in San Jose, CA. All we know on John Peters' father is he may be C. John Peters and the Peters family is from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Does anyone have any information on any of these people? I keep coming up on dead ends. Thanks! Lisa Larimore blarimor@pacbell.net

    3. I have seen posts on some of my mailing lists about a program on PBS called "Ancestors". I seem to remember it being on when we were in the process of moving or something, and I didn't really know what it was. Since then, I have really gotten into searching genealogy and would love to see it. Does anyone know of a place that would sell the video? I don't know how to contact PBS. Would it also be out for rent? Thanks for thinking.... :-) Teresa -- "CHOOSE LIFE" (Deuteronomy 30:19,20)

    2. My info came from a book in the library in Ft.Worth Tx. Most library's have this book. "Albemarle Parish" 1717-1778 Surry & Sussex Co. Va. Page 111. In this time fram, Church records are some time all we have to go on. Only in this time fram, 1767-1774 shows the 3 children for John & Martha. Does not mean that they did not have more children. I feel sure they did. Was common too have a lsrge family then. John's father was Thomas Peters Jr. and Mother was Hannah ?? Thomas & Hannah had 6 children listed on page 110 John, Anne, Thomas, (My Line) Mary, Matthew (Who Heir the home place) & Temperence. Will try too find the other record, but my computer has crashed a couple times. Been through other records & have not found it, but will let you know if I find it. Red Peters in Texas

    2. Alan, Here is essentially the same information I mailed to Roger. John Henry Peters' siblings are: Theodora b. 1821 Gerhard b. Aug. 4, 1823 Theodor b. 1829 Mechtilde b. ? Bernard b. July 21, 1839 All were born in Esserden. Some spouse information available. The only child we have information on these individuals is Theodor Johann son of Gerhard. We are not aware that any sibling came to this country. Theodor Peters is the name of the person who witnessed the wedding of John Henry in Quincy. Perhaps he traveled to this country. Jerry Peters

According to my information, my Henry Peters was born in VA and his children, all except the youngest, were born in Tenn. 1. [PETERS] Re: Franklin Co VA Peters: German or English? (was: Zachariah Peters)
    2. Paula Kelley Ward
    3. This is in reply to Mike Peters (whose message appears at bottom): Was our Peters family of German or English descent? Our mutual ancestor, Zachariah Peters, was b. about 1770 and married Kesiah Lively in 1794 in Amherst Co VA. At this time, several descendants believe that Zachariah's father was William Peters of Amherst Co VA, who (as I have been told but the documentation has not been provided to me) was an Anglican minister and the first of this particular family to arrive in the Colonies. Over the past 25-plus years, I have examined quite a few Peters families in the search for my ancestors. In the process, I naturally researched Christian Peters of Peterstown (W)VA (Monroe County), because some of my family members had information that led us to believe we were descended from Christian. Christian was in the Rev. War and was the founder of Peterstown. I am pretty sure, at this point in time, that we are not descendants of Christian. Franklin County VA had more than one Peters family. Two of these families were, without question, of German descent, and they and their descendants married other German families in the area. What has been very interesting to me is that an analysis of these families reveals that Zachariah's descendants did not marry any of the Peters of German descent nor any other German families in Franklin County VA. However, looking at a few cousin marriages, it appears that my Peters family definitely liked their own Peters family better than others!!! :D At any rate, Zachariah's descendants did not marry into the German families in that area *until the 20th century,* and that is what caused the confusion in our Peters family research. Annually, in May or June, there is a Peters Family Reunion in Franklin County, VA, and it is not unusual to see cousins of the German Baptist or Dunkard faiths attending these reunions. This resulted in several family members believing that we were descended from a German line of Peters. I must credit at least four cousins who, individually, came to the same conclusion, and now we are all comparing notes and hoping to document the threads of evidence that have turned up. Those cousins are: Otis Scott, Carolyn Hale Bruce, Betty P. Bibb, and Polly Pate. In addition, I must add that I found a book in the Virginia State Archives, Richmond, VA, several years ago about a branch of our Peters family. This was a self-published book about the descendants of another son of Zachariah whose name was Joseph Gideon Peters. The lady (now deceased) who did the research and produced the book had a brief statement in the front of the book about this Peters family being of English descent. She did not say why or offer any proof. I am sorry to say that right at this moment I do not know where my notes are regarding this wonderful discovery in the Virginia State Archives. When I do find this information, I will let everyone know. Sincerely, Paula At 01:55 PM 04/17/2000 EDT, you wrote: >Dear Paula: > >Good to talk to you again. 1. Re: [PETERS] Meester/Peters
    2. Ken Whitmore
    3. Jerry, Heinrich definitely sounds German to me, but a German being born in the Netherlands wouldn't be unusual, seeing how Germans like to go to the Netherlands to enjoy the sailing and the beaches. But then, it looks like your data on the German birthplace is pretty clear. That still leaves you with a MEESTER line which I'm pretty sure could only be Dutch, since the German would be spelled MEISTER. However, that still doesn't necessarily limit that line to the Netherlands, since Flanders (Belgium) and Luxembourg also have many Dutch speaking folks (see "BeNeLux"). In case I didn't mention it or anyone out there doesn't yet know, Holland is actually only the name of two provinces of the Netherlands: Noord-Holland (North-Holland) and Zuid-Holland (South-Holland), which border the sea, facing the English channel. These two make up only about 1/6 of the country, but the name probably took on importance due to the fact that most of the seafaring trade passes through these two. 1. Re: [PETERS] Meester/Peters
    2. Jerry, Did your John Henry have any siblings? I have a John H. Peters 10/7/1859 - 1/25/1914 who was born in Germany. There's no information as to the exact location he was born. Since our John's were born 26 years apart, he would most likely be a niece or nephew. Maybe there is a connection. Thanks. alan :) >Ken, >I was referring to Holland - the country, really The Netherlands. I also >meant to type Bernhard Peters. 2. Ken, I was referring to Holland - the country, really The Netherlands. I also meant to type Bernhard Peters. Thanks for your response. I find it interesting that my ggrandfather John Henry Peters (born Johan Heinrich) listed Holland as his place of birth on the 1880 census, but listed Germany on the 1900 census. Anyone have an explanation for this. I am new to this list so I will briefly list John Henry Peters' history. He was born in Esserden near Rees, Germany, approximately 20 km northwest of Wesel on November 29, 1833. He emigrated to St. Louis in 1855 to 1860. He volunteered in the Civil War on May 10, 1861 and was mustered out on September 9, 1862 in St. Louis. After living in St. Louis and St. Paul, MN, he settled in Quincy, Adams County IL. He married Anna Mary Wilde on April 23, 1872 in Quincy, IL. He died in Adams County, IL on November 29, 1905. His father, grandfather and ggrandfather all named Bernhard Peters and all were born in Esserden or Speldrop near Rees. Jerry Peters
