    1. Re: [PERTH] Margaret Marten and George McLeish - Nether Fordun Farm, Auchterarder.
    2. > Below are two entries re the marriage of Margaret and George. The first one > refers to £2.5s Scots collected and also £1.4s.... Can someone clarify for me > please would this money have been paid by the Bride's parents? or the groom? Hello Bob or Brenda, From your message, one entry is for Banns, paid for by the Groom. > How would the amount have been reached?- it seems a lot of money for 1732. The cost for Proclaiming of Banns might be found written at the beginning of the Record book for the years you are researching, costs varied from place to place and time to time, they were set by the Kirk Session > I must admit I did not think to search for other marriage entries to compare > amounts paid. Should have done that. > Also curious about the banns - Listed in Oct. and proclaimed how many times ? Most Record books I have seen give the number of times the Banns were Proclaimed. in Church, i.e. once on three Sabbaths or once on one Sabbath, twice on another, for a total of three Proclamations or Callings, did you not notice a number of days written in the far right column on the page ? The schedule of the Banns had a bearing on the cost of the Banns, if they were read in Church on three different Sundays they would be less costly than Banns read on two Sundays or all three times on one Sunday. > which says they were married on 17th Nov... was this an announcement of the > wedding date or would the date have been entered after the marriage? Announcement, unlikely. Friday 17th Nov. 1732, at http://www.earth.com/calendar?11%2F1732, was the Marriage Date, so you are lucky there, many times only the date of Banns are listed. > Film 0993515 - Parish 329 - Auchterarder. Old Parish registers. > 1732. Page 314 Session Records. > "Sabbath Octr 15th there was collected two pounds five shilling scots. I would read that as the total of Collection Plate monies for that Sunday. > Received in charity from George McLeish and Margaret Marten > when listed for proclamation in order to marriage one pound four sh." The "one pound four sh." was the fee for the Banns > Banns: > October 21st 1732. > "George McLeish and Maragret Marten both of this Parish. > Listed to be proclaimed in order of marriage and this being ordered > and regularly done they were married on the seventeenth of November > seventeen hundred and thirty two years." The Minister or Session Clerk wrote the Date of Marriage in the Record Book, sometime after the ceremony. regards, Maureen Kuzyk.
